The Baby with Nine Lives
BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa, March 11, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Six of seven premature babies have died as the result of contamination of their intravenous parenteral nutrition source. The deaths are being blamed on a batch of contaminated liquid mixed at the hospital's pharmacy.
But one girl in the perinatal care unit of Pelonomi Regional Hospital survived. The 28-day old also survived a botched abortion attempt two months earlier.
In an interview with South Africa's The Star, the young mother said that the baby survived because it was God's will. "She is a fighter and a survivor," she added. No details as to why the abortion was unsuccessful were revealed in The Star. The mother, who wished to remain anonymous, said that "When I found out I was pregnant, I tried to terminate the pregnancy, but it was unsuccessful. Then she was born two months prematurely and could not breathe on her own - and now this. I think God wants my baby to be alive."
The mother said that as a student she did not feel ready to have a child. "It was a mistake. My parents did not know I was pregnant until I went into labour. But now that she is here, I love her and have accepted her as part of my life. I do not want anything bad to happen to her," she said.
The baby, though still in critical condition, is gaining weight and showing signs of recovery. "She is still on a feed drip and is gaining weight. This gives me great relief," her mother said.
The hospital and health officials are investigating the source of the contamination.
