325,000 Michigan Residents Sign Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Petition
LANSING, March 12, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A steamroller campaign to outlaw partial-birth abortion in Michigan has attracted the support of 325,000 citizens. The announcement Tuesday by Right to Life of Michigan President Barbara Listing revealed that the number is enough for the legislature to pass a veto-proof law. The partial-birth abortion ban signed into law last November by US President George W. Bush was promptly vetoed by Michigan state Governor Jennifer Granholm.
The campaign, dubbed The People's Override, attained the 325,000 target in less than two months. All that is needed now is a certification that at least 254,206 signers are registered voters in Michigan in order for the petition to be legally binding.
Listing, in a statement on the RTL Michigan website said that "The people of Michigan are sending a clear and overwhelming message to Governor Jennifer Granholm. Children deserve to be protected from partial birth abortions. We are continuing the campaign for another month."
The group plans to have the petitions prepared for submission to the Secretary of State by mid-April. This will allow the Legislature to act on The People's Override before breaking for summer recess.
Right to Life of Michigan is seeking more signatures to send a strong statement to Governor Jennifer Granholm. For more information or -- especially for Michigan residents -- to sign the petition, contact:
