English Media Distorts Spanish Papal Nuncio's Remarks on Homosexual Unions

Nuncio actually said that legalization of homosexual unions is totally against Church doctrine

MADRID, May 7, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - English media outlets around the world repeated a report from the UK Guardian newspaper which claimed that the Papal Nuncio to Spain called for recognition of homosexual unions. Spanish-speaking LifeSiteNews.com readers informed LifeSiteNews.com that the story was false. In fact, Spanish Papal Nuncio Monsignor Manuel Monteiro de Castro specifically said that the legalization of homosexual unions is totally against the doctrine of the Church.

The Guardian reported a subsequent comment of the nuncio without referring to the comment against legal recognition of homosexual unions. He also said that "there are other forms of cohabitation and it is good that they be recognized", however press reports are unclear as to what was meant by the statement which could also refer to dependent cohabitation between siblings or elderly mother and daughter.

LifeSiteNews.com has requested a clarification on the matter from the Vatican Press Service.
