MADRID, May 7, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - English media outlets around the world repeated a report from the UK Guardian newspaper which claimed that the Papal Nuncio to Spain called for recognition of homosexual unions. Spanish-speaking LifeSiteNews.com readers informed LifeSiteNews.com that the story was false. In fact, Spanish Papal Nuncio Monsignor Manuel Monteiro de Castro specifically said that the legalization of homosexual unions is totally against the doctrine of the Church.

The Guardian reported a subsequent comment of the nuncio without referring to the comment against legal recognition of homosexual unions. LifeSiteNews.com has requested a clarification on the matter from the Vatican Press Service.

See the Spanish language coverage which quotes the nuncio as clearly stating the Church's position which is totally opposed to legal recognition of homosexual civil unions.
