OTTAWA, May 26, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - While debate in the United States rages over Catholic politicians receiving communion and Catholic bishops across the nation are becoming ever-more bold in calling politicians within their dioceses to accountability, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has a "group desire" to study the issue.

In a recent interview with the Catholic News Service in the U.S., Deacon William Kokesh, Communications Director for the CCCB, said that after the current election, the CCCB will undertake a "more in-depth study on the whole interface between Catholics and the political process, not only with politicians but also with other Catholics."

LifeSiteNews.com inquired about CCCB plans for a taskforce similar to that of the US Bishops regarding pro-abortion Catholic politicians and Church sanctions. In early May Bede Hubbard, Associate General Secretary of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, informed LifeSiteNews.com that "As for the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, there is currently no plan for a similar task force, either regarding relations of bishops with politicians or the specific question of refusing communion."

LifeSiteNews.com spoke with Deacon Kokesh today for clarification. Deacon Kokesh said that while preparing the latest document urging Catholics to be involved in the political process the bishops expressed a "group desire" to "really define the whole" relationship between Catholic politicians and the Church. Kokesh stressed however that no formal plans were made, no committee struck, and no date for such considerations had been made.
