US Election Pro-Life Victories: Bush Re-election, Republican Majorities, Parental Notification for Abortion
WASHINGTON, November 3, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The re-election of US President George W. Bush has pro-life Americans, as well as pro-lifers from around the world, delighted. "We are absolutely delighted to have four more years with pro-life President Bush," exclaimed Carol Tobias, political director of the US National Right to Life Committee.
Not only has President Bush been re-elected -- Republican representation in both the Senate and Congress has been expanded, paving the way for pro-life appointments to the US Supreme Court. The GOP added four seats in the Senate, bringing their hold on the body to a 55 to 44 majority. Republicans still lack the necessary 60-seat majority, however, to end Democratic filibustering in the senate, as typified this year by the blockade of President Bush's Supreme Court nominations.
The GOP picked up one seat to retain their majority of the 435 seats in Congress, by a margin of 232 to 201.
Notably, President Bush received more votes for President than any other candidate in US history. In all, President Bush garnered 58,729,646, or 51 percent of votes, versus Kerry's 48 percent. Polls report as many as 60 percent, nearly 120 million people, cast a ballot, the greatest voter turn-out since 1968.
Florida voters backed a measure requiring minors to gain parental consent before procuring an abortion.
"It was all in all quite an exciting night," said Beverley LaHaye, Concerned Women for America Founder and Chairman. "We have to redouble our efforts, and I believe that God has blessed us and given us another chance to honor Him and to do what is right for our families and our country," she said. "Now is not the time to relax and hope someone else does the hard work. Together we need to keep the pressure on congress and, yes, even on the president when necessary, to take the lead on the issues that really matter to us."
Vice President of International Right to Life Jim Hughes expressed his sentiments saying, "thank God!", in comments to LifeSiteNews.com today. "People at the United Nations won't have to fear that the Mexico City Policy will be overturned by a John Kerry presidency," he said. The measure, signed into law by President Bush in 2001, reinstated the Reagan initiative to ban U.S. aid to non-profit groups abroad that offer abortion counselling.
