Catholic Award to Stephen Lewis Went Ahead without St Boniface Archbishop in Attendance
By Hilary White
ST. BONIFACE, Manitoba, December 6, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The St. Boniface General Hospital last week awarded one of the world’s more prominent promoters of the eugenic population control and anti-Catholic movements in international health care. Stephen Lewis, despite protests by Catholics and pro-life groups, both to the hospital and the local bishop, was duly granted a prestigious award for “international humanitarian work in health care.”
Kevin Hunter, Director of Communications and Development for the Foundation said that while the Foundation had noted the objections of Campaign Life Coalition Manitoba, the award is not designated as a Catholic award. “It spans all faiths and all viewpoints,” he said. Hunter confirmed, however, that the St. Boniface General is still a Catholic hospital.
The awards dinner was attended by a number of prominent Manitobans including the Lieutenant Governor, John Harvard, Hon Raymond Simard, Liberal MP for St. Boniface, and the Mayor of St. Boniface. Notable by his absence, however, was Archbishop Emilius Goulet, head of the Catholic Archdiocese of St. Boniface.
Archbishop Goulet told LifeSite that the granting of awards ought to be done “respecting the moral principles and values of the Catholic Church.” He said, “I am totally against abortion or anything against life and the doctrines of the Church.” Mrs. Maria Slykerman, president of Campaign Life Coalition Manitoba told LifeSiteNews.com that Archbishop Goulet had assured her of his intention to address the issue to the hospital board on which he sits.
The awarding by a Catholic hospital of so prominent and public an opponent of Church teaching indicates that the slide towards secular principles in the life of Canada’s Catholic institutions remains unchecked. The St. Boniface Hospital and Research Foundation is the primary fundraising body for the St. Boniface General Hospital Inc, whose mission, according to its website, is to raise funds in ways that are “consistent with the values of the Grey Nuns,” a once great Catholic religious order founded by St. Marguerite d'Youville in the 18th century.
Hunter said that the hospital had awarded Stephen Lewis because he has done, “perhaps more than anyone in the world to bring attention to the (AIDS) epidemic in Africa.” In 1984 the award was given in person to Pope John Paul II and later to Mother Theresa.
Stephen Lewis, despite his putative significance in raising public awareness of the AIDS crisis has endorsed methods that have been shown to be a major contributor to the problem of its spread. In the history of the AIDS epidemic in Africa, those programmes that have endorsed the libertine “safe sex” doctrines have been shown to increase AIDS rates and add to the spread of other sexually transmitted diseases.
Lewis, during his tenure as deputy executive director of UNICEF, proved that his primary goal was the promotion of the secular dogmas of the sexual revolution. He spent his efforts promoting abortion, contraception and sexual rights for adolescents, largely ignoring pressing health problems such as the spread of malaria, tuberculosis and cholera, as well as the necessity of clean water and improved education.
REAL Women of Canada has just published a scathing summary of many of Lewis’s wrongdoings in its Nov/Dec Reality magazine. See today’s re-publishing of that article as a LifeSiteNews.com Special Report at:
