Abortion Amendment to UN Women’s Document Proposed by US

NEW YORK, February 28, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Attempts by the United States to clarify that the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action drawn up in 1995 do not call for abortion to be regarded as a human right are likely to be met with fierce resistance by UN feminists. Although the document does not mention abortion as a human right, several UN diplomats have interpreted it as such.

The US is thus seeking an amendment to a document reaffirming the Beijing documents. The amendment adds the statement, “and reaffirm that they do not create any new international human rights and that they do not include the right to abortion.”

Pro-life lobbyists at the UN have noted that several UN documents are being interpreted as promoting abortion. Indeed, LifeSiteNews.com has reported for years how UN committees overseeing implementation of UN conventions have erroneously seen pushing abortion as part of their mandates.

The Beijing review, which commenced today, will last two weeks. Much rancor is expected as over 100 countries and some 6000 women’s advocates will take part in the proceedings.
