Toronto Cardinal Ambrozic Warns Gay 'Marriage' Will Expose Children to Gay Sex-Ed

Urges Court-Proof Law to Uphold Traditional Marriage

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

TORONTO, January 19, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In a letter to Prime Minister Paul Martin released yesterday, Toronto Cardinal Aloysius Ambrozic has asked that a bill be enacted to protect the traditional definition of marriage. Moreover, knowing that provincial courts have forced the redefining of marriage, the Cardinal asks that the bill include use of the Charter's notwithstanding clause to allow for it to take effect.

"I urge you, Prime Minister, to table a Bill that legislatively enacts the traditional opposite-sex definition of marriage, coupled with a clause that provides for the legislation to take effect notwithstanding the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms," wrote the Cardinal.

The request for the legislation is couched in a demand for a time of reflection prior to altering the definition of marriage. "My purpose in writing this open letter to you is to urge caution in taking this step towards the re-definition of marriage. We all would do well to pause reflectively before we alter social structures like marriage and the family that lie at the core of our society, and that represent the accumulated wisdom and experience of the ages," he writes.

One of the dangerous consequences of the redefinition of marriage which the Cardinal draws attention to is the equating of heterosexual sex with homosexual sex. "The law is a teacher. Does Canadian society as a whole, and do parents in particular, understand what the law will be teaching in this instance? It will be teaching that homosexual activity and heterosexual activity are morally equivalent." The Cardinal Archbishop of Toronto added, "Public schools will be required to provide sex education in that light."

In his letter the Cardinal acknowledges the use of the notwithstanding clause may be controversial. However he notes, "Its use in the context of same-sex marriage would be most appropriate." In conclusion the Cardinal urges that "all parliamentarians, Cabinet Ministers included" be permitted "to vote their consciences on any legislation that is put to a vote in Parliament on the issue of marriage."

Toronto Cardinal Gives Direction to Priests and Faithful on Supporting Traditional Marriage

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

TORONTO, January 19, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In addition to writing Prime Minister Paul Martin on the subject, Toronto Cardinal Aloysius Ambrozic has directed all priests in the Toronto Archdiocese to make his letter available to parishioners, and to include prayer petitions on protecting marriage "at all Sunday Masses from now until Easter 2005." In a memo dated January 17, the Cardinal also encourages priests to allow a couple to make a statement at the end of Mass about getting politically active on the issue.

In a separate letter to the faithful, the Cardinal pleads for action. "As your Archbishop, I would ask you to consider taking an active role to defend the traditional meaning of marriage," says the letter. Cardinal Ambrozic stresses that Catholics "have a duty to make our voices heard in the public realm," and to that end asks the faithful to begin "writing, e-mailing or faxing your Member of Parliament and sending a copy to the Prime Minister Paul Martin."

The Cardinal also asks for prayers for Parliamentarians since "They have a very serious decision to make, which will affect future generations."

‘Roe’ Requests Supreme Court Overturn Abortion Law

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

WASHINGTON, January 19, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Norma McCorvey, the former "Jane Roe" whose case first legalized abortion on demand 32 years ago, today announced her formal request that the U.S. Supreme Court revisit Roe v. Wade, and make abortion illegal. She cites the long-lasting and devastating effect abortion has on women – McCorvey’s case cites the sworn testimony of more than 1,000 women hurt by abortion.

"This is the day I've longed for," said McCorvey, who deeply regrets her role in legalizing abortion. "Now we know so much more, and I plead with the Court to listen to the witnesses and re-evaluate Roe v. Wade. It was a dreadful day in America when the Supreme Court allowed a woman to kill her own child."

"With each child aborted, there is another tragedy: the harm to the mother," McCorvey continued. "I've worked in abortion facilities, and I've seen firsthand the horrific nature of abortion and its devastation to women and girls."

Allan Parker, president of The Justice Foundation and lead attorney on the case, said much has changed since the high court's 1973 ruling.

"We're asking the Court to find, based on the changed legal and factual conditions, that it would be a grave injustice to continue Roe v. Wade," Parker said.

"Norma has presented over 5,300 pages of significant, sufficient, and compelling evidence of substantial changes in factual and legal conditions," Parker said, noting the evidence includes sworn testimony by women who suffered from their abortions as well as testimony from scientific and medical experts and abortion facility workers.

After reviewing this substantial evidence in McCorvey's appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit last year, Judge Edith Jones stated that she "fervently hoped that the Court would someday acknowledge such developments and re-evaluate" the Roe case accordingly.

"McCorvey presented evidence that goes to the heart of the balance Roe struck between the choice of a mother and the life of her unborn child,” Judge Jones explained. “First, there are about a thousand affidavits of women who have had abortions and claim to have suffered long-term emotional damage and impaired relationships from their decision.

Studies by scientists, offered by McCorvey, suggest that women may be affected emotionally and physically for years afterward and may be more prone to engage in high-risk, self-destructive conduct as a result of having had abortions.”

“In sum, if courts were to delve into the facts underlying Roe's balancing scheme with present-day knowledge, they might conclude that the woman's ‘choice’ is far more risky and less beneficial, and the child's sentience far more advanced, than the Roe Court knew.”

Spanish Bishops Make Ambiguous Statement on Condoms in AIDS Prevention

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

MADRID, January 19, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – An ambiguous statement from the representative of the Spanish Catholic bishops has left the world wondering if the Catholic Church in Spain now officially endorses the use of condoms for AIDS prevention.

Fr. Juan Antonio Martinez Camino, Secretary General of the Spanish bishops, after a meeting Tuesday with Minister of Health, Elena Salgado, told reporters that on the one hand that the bishops “do not accept the use of condoms,” but then said that “condoms have their place in the integral and global prevention of AIDS.” The statement, which is being applauded by the Church’s traditional antagonists on the left and among homosexual activists, has left Catholic observers puzzled and alarmed.

While Reuters carried the headline, “Spain’s Catholic Church backs condoms to fight AIDS,” the more cautious Spanish media said that the Spanish bishops are ‘softening their rejection of condoms.”

Fr. Martinez Camino said the bishops endorse the so-called “ABC” approach to AIDS prevention. The policy was first proposed in an article in the Lancet called “ABC - abstain, be faithful, use a condom,” and has been adopted by the official development agency of the English bishops, Catholic Aid or Overseas Development, (CAFOD). The English bishops issued a letter saying that they adhered to the traditional Catholic doctrine but declined to correct CAFOD who still maintain the policy.

The ABC approach proposes to be a compromise allowing the traditional Catholic teaching of chastity but suggests the use of condoms if that ‘ideal’ is found to be impossible. This rationalization has been unequivocally rejected by numerous Vatican documents.

Some groups have proposed the ABC approach as a way to bridge the conflict between Catholic groups and secular agencies such as the UNFPA who are dedicated to the condom ideology. “The time has come, the Lancet magazine says, for a joint strategy in the prevention of such a tragic pandemic as AIDS, and contraception has a place in a global approach to tackling AIDS,” Martinez Camino said.

One popular Catholic columnist at Catholic World Report going by the nom de plume, “Diogenes,” said of the ABC approach, “It’s hard to see how two morally praiseworthy actions (abstinence and fidelity) and one mortally sinful utilitarian expedient can constitute a common ground that includes Catholics.”

New York Democrats Propose $1 Billion Embryonic Stem Cell Public Funding

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

ALBANY, January 19, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Fearing that New York State will lag behind California in embryonic stem cell research, Democratic Senators there proposed legislation Sunday that would see $1 billion allocated for the unethical research for the state.

The proposal, suggested by Senate Democratic leader David A. Paterson, concurs with the $3 billion in spending California allocated last year, and the $380 million also announced by New Jersey acting governor Richard J. Codey last week for stem cell research.

The New York and New Jersey lawmakers worry scientists will be attracted to the research grants available to them through California institutions.

Canadian Armed Forces Permit Gay 'Marriages' at Military Bases

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

OTTAWA, January 19, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Canadian military has told its chaplains to go ahead and “marry” same-sex couples if requested.

“It's essentially a statement of the way the law is going,” said military chaplain Col. Stan Johnstone, who helped draft the new guidelines. “We don't put any expectations on people. We expect them to function as we always do, according to the tenets of their church, their own conscience and the laws of the province,” he said, according to a Sun Media report.

Johnstone said the new “interim” guidelines are for use only until the federal Liberals bring in new same-sex “marriage” legislation expected next month. He said that none of the 150 chaplains would be forced to solemnize same-sex “weddings” if it conflicts with their religious views.

Johnstone said that they also currently have never had a request by any same-sex couple to be “married,” he simply wants the military to take the “leading edge” on the issue.

There is no information on Col. Johnstone’s reasons for deciding it was necessary to take the “leading edge”, especially given that no one has requested a same-sex ‘marriage’.

Homosexual Advocacy Group Reveals Vicious Anti-Christian Program

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

TORONTO, January 19, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In an editorial appearing on the website of the homosexual activist group, “Equal Marriage,” members of the lobbyist organization, EGALE, (Equality for Gays and Lesbians Everywhere) have revealed their intention to make illegal the public practice of Christianity or teaching of Christian moral doctrine.

Bishop Fred Henry, in his recent pastoral letter on homosexuality, openly recognized that the purpose of the “gay marriage” push is the destruction of the traditional family and of any religious opposition. Bishop Henry wrote, “The goal (of changing the definition of marriage) is to acquire a powerful psychological weapon to change society’s rejection of homosexual activity and lifestyle into gradual, even if reluctant, acceptance.”

The authors of the EGALE editorial, Kevin Bourassa and Joe Varnell, in an enraged attack on Henry, admitted that the purpose behind the move to approve Gay “marriage” is the suppression of traditional Christianity. They wrote, “We predict that gay marriage will indeed result in the growth of acceptance of homosexuality now underway, as Henry fears. But marriage equality will also contribute to the abandonment of toxic religions, liberating society from the prejudice and hatred that has polluted culture for too long.”

Bourassa and Varnell, apparently oblivious to the irony, indulge in a tirade of abuse, calling Bishop Henry a “religious extremist,” “bigot,” and “bishop of bigotry,” and calling his preaching “toxic and prejudiced.” They conclude with what has become one of the most common anti-Catholic slurs. “It’s good to remember that bishops like him supported Hitler.”

The group’s assessment has been endorsed, albeit in more measured terms, in an editorial in the Toronto Star, Canada’s most widely circulated newspaper, that said Henry had “disgrac(ed) his office and the Catholic church.”

The Star editorial said, “This is a stand the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops should promptly distance itself from. So should leading individual Catholic prelates.”

The Star editorialist, however, seems unaware that Bishop Henry has thus far stood alone in his defence of Catholic teaching on human sexuality. While the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops organization, has said that each bishop is free to say what he wants in his own diocese, no public endorsement or support has so far come to Henry from the heads of any of Canada’s remaining 71 dioceses and eparchies.

While a few Ontario bishops have published altered versions of a generic pastoral letter encouraging their flock to ask MPs to uphold the traditional definition of marriage, unlike Henry, the bishops have all so far conspicuously avoided any mention of Catholic teaching on homosexual activity, its sinfulness and its harm to both the persons engaged in it and to the general society.

To send a note of support to Bishop Henry

London Catholic Schools to Participate in Fundraiser for Embryo Research Supportive MS Society

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

LONDON, Ontario, January 19, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Catholic schools in Ontario have a history of often supporting dubious causes and schools in the London diocese are now being asked to participate in a Read-a-Thon for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, which supports destructive embryonic stem cell research (ESCR).

In recent years, pro-life advocates have repeatedly had to renew their efforts to stop Catholic schools in Ontario from collecting funds for UNICEF, because of the UN organization’s support for abortion and other practices which violate Catholic moral principles.

When Bill C-6, was passed it allowed Canadian research organizations to use ‘spare’ or leftover embryos from in vitro fertilization to be used as living human test subjects. The MS Society applauded the passage of the bill that pro-life activists called one of the worst since the Omnibus bill that made abortion legal.

The MS Society website says, “Stem cell research has great potential for people with multiple sclerosis, because of the real possibility for breakthroughs that may lead to a cure for multiple sclerosis through research on adult and embryonic stem cells.”

The belief that embryos can be used for therapies for diseases has often been discredited by leading researchers in the field. Though many diseases are being currently treated and even cured with the use of adult stem cells which are found in the patient’s own body, thus far every attempt to introduce foreign tissue derived from a dead embryo has not produced positive therapeutic results.

London area parents, Alex and Susan Schadenberg have written to the school board and to Bishop Fabbro to protest the inclusion of the MS Society in the fundraiser and to ask that the involvement of the Catholic schools be reconsidered. Mrs. Schadenberg writes, “As Catholics, we cannot support this organization.”

Abortion Promoter Planned Parenthood and Arnold Schwarzenegger Sued for Racism

Suit Notes Organization Conceals Abortion Provision to Enter Black Neighborhoods

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

LOS ANGELES, January 19, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A suit naming the Governor of the State of California, California's State Treasurer, Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles (PPLA), and others, was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court Tuesday afternoon (Andrew Jones v. Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles, et al.). The legal action was filed by Andrew Jones, the former Project Manager of the Community Services/Education Department of PPLA. Mr. Jones worked for PPLA for several years and is African-American.

The verified complaint seeks recovery for unlawful termination, racial and sexual harassment, and a failure to pay overtime. Jones' suit alleges that PPLA allowed overt racism and sexism to infect its facilities in early 2004.

Among other allegations, it is alleged that PPLA did nothing when one of its employees was referred to as a "nigger." Additionally, the suit, filed under penalty of perjury, alleges that PPLA portrayed African-American males as being irresponsible and that male employees were regularly referred to as "dickheads" and other offensive terms by the white female management.

Affidavits by other female PPLA staff were also filed Tuesday. One swore, "There was a sense that any employee who was not a white female was going to be carefully watched. . . . [T]here was a strong anti-male bias at PPLA." Another refers to, "a significant anti-male bias."

Jones' lawsuit also seeks a court order requiring the Governor of the State of California, the State Treasurer, and the Director of California's Health & Human Services Agency to immediately stop funding PPLA due to its racist practices and because of its failure to disclose serious failures in its accounting systems.

In part, the plaintiff relies on a late-2003 single audit finding by the certified public accounting firm of RBZ LLC that PPLA "did not comply with requirements regarding reporting that are applicable to its Family Planning Services program." Additionally, the complaint alleges it was only after Jones questioned the financial practices of PPLA that he was fired. According to the complaint, he was given a stellar employee review just days before his termination.

Pursuant to California law, grantees or recipients such as PPLA must refrain from discrimination in order to qualify for taxpayer-funded programs. PPLA is subject to reporting requirements and must be able to demonstrate financial viability on state loan programs. In May 2004, Plaintiff "placed Defendant PPLA on notice of "accounting miscues, angry patients, and disgruntled gatekeepers," according to the complaint.

According to Richard D. Ackerman, Jones' lead attorney, "California cannot continue funding PPLA's programs, especially when California is looking at cutting funding to schools and emergency health care facilities. There are other agencies that can offer the same services as PPLA without misrepresenting their financial condition, and without engaging in racism and sexism."

Finally, the suit makes mention of the fact that PPLA concocted a scheme to place an abortion facility in South Los Angeles without being honest about its purpose. It is alleged that Jones and others were instructed to market the facility to the African-American community as being a non-abortion facility.

It appears that PPLA was aware of the fact that African-Americans do not want their unborn children eliminated by abortion, and PPLA knew that it could not get community support if they came into town promoting the disintegration of future generations of African-American children.

The complaint alleges, "Plaintiff refused to engage in PPLA promotional practices that were intended to deceive the African-American community in South Los Angeles . . . Plaintiff, an African-American, was not comfortable being forced to misrepresent facts to other similarly situated persons."

72 Pro-Abortion Catholics in Congress to be Outed by American Life League Ad

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

WASHINGTON, January 19, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - American Life League, the nation's largest grassroots Catholic pro-life educational organization, will hold a press conference on Monday, Jan. 24 to unveil a two-page ad identifying the 72 pro-abortion Catholics in both the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate.

The ad, which will span two full pages, is scheduled to run in the Washington Times on Jan. 24.

The pro-life group has undertaken several similar ad campaigns which serve to incite public awareness of politicians who claim to be Catholic while supporting what the Catholic Church teaches to be murder of the innocent.

Previous ads have also directly challenged Catholic religious leaders to take action to curb the scandal of prominent Catholics within their dioceses who support abortion. A similar ad in California asked Catholic bishops to make clear to all in their flock that one cannot be pro-abortion and still be a Catholic in good standing.

Domestically, Title X of the Public Health Service Act got $288 million, and international population control got $441 million. Additionally, other federal programs, ncluding Medicaid, will likely provide about $240 million to about 4,500 U.S. clinics in 2005 for controlling births, based upon a 2003 funding study by Planned Parenthood.
