G8 Summit Push to Force Abortion on Africa

Working document encourages aid being made conditional on Africans accepting abortion

GLENEAGLES, July 7, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The G8 summit taking place in Scotland today and tomorrow gathers leaders of eight leading developed nations, with a major focus of this year's summit being alleviating poverty in Africa.  However, the key working document for the Africa-related discussions of the G8 calls for "greater access to . . .  safe abortions" threatening that if this is not carried out, "the numbers of deaths (of pregnant women) will accelerate."

The G8 consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The European Union also participates.  Traditionally the leader of the host country sets the agenda and as such British Prime Minister Tony Blair selected advisors (See the list of advisors here http://www.commissionforafrica.org/english/commissioners/bios/introduction.html ) to prepare the Commission for Africa Report (See the full report here:  http://www.commissionforafrica.org/english/report/thereport/english/11-03-05_cr_... )

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)  put out a supporting report (http://www.unfpa.org/publications/detail.cfm?ID=243&filterListType=4 ) last week, concurring that "reproductive health and rights" - UN slang for abortion and contraception - is key to ending poverty.

However, the claims are little more than the same propaganda that abortion activists used to legalize abortion in the United States.  Well known former abortionist Bernard Nathanson co-founder and first president National Abortion Right Action League, after leaving the pro-abortion movement, confessed: "Repeating the big lie often enough convinces the public. The number of women dying from illegal abortions was around 200-250 annually. The figure we constantly fed to the media was 10,000. These false figures took root in the consciousness of Americans, convincing many that we needed to crack the abortion law."

The Commission for Africa Report argues that where abortion has been made 'safe and legal' maternal mortality has dropped significantly.  However, experts in the field have often repeated that abortion's legality often comes as a price-tag for international financial aid, which also serves to benefit a country's health care generally.  Improved health care resources, and not availability of abortion, account for improved maternal health.

The fact that UNFPA is supporting the abortion push comes as no surprise.  UNFPA is one of the foremost abortion activist organizations on the international scene.  So staunch is UNFPA's abortion agenda that it continues to be complicit in China's brutal one-child program which includes forced abortion, according to the most recent Amnesty International report (http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2005/may/05052706.html ).  For the past several years the United States has withheld its annual contribution (usually above $25 million) to UNFPA due to the organization's collusion in coercive abortion. The funding of such organizations is prohibited by US law.

Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, who claims to be a Catholic and 'personally opposed' to abortion, has already pledged $15 million to support the UNFPA pro-abortion agenda in Africa.  The contribution is noted in the recently released document "Canada's Contribution to the G8 Africa Action Plan" which states, "Canada is providing $15 million in support of the UN Population Fund's purchase of reproductive health commodities." The recommendations of the Commission report sound more like commands and tie financial support to the starving nations directly to adherence to the population control/pro-abortion "reproductive health services" agenda.  "African governments must show strong leadership in promoting women's and men's right to sexual and reproductive health. Governments must be accountable for ending the stigma and gender discrimination associated with sexual and reproductive services," says the document.  As for instructions for donors it adds, "Donors should do all they can to enable universal access to sexual and reproductive health services."

There is no doubt that the language employed - 'reproductive health services' - refers to abortion.  In 2001, at a preparatory meeting for the World Summit on Children Canada's representative Andras Vamos-Goldman shocked the world by admitting that indeed "reproductive health care services" includes abortion.  The statement caused massive uproar as the US, the Holy See and many Latin American countries were forced to make formal objections to this definition of reproductive health 'services'.

Jim Hughes, Vice President of the International Right to Life Federation commented on the situation for LifeSiteNews.com saying, "To alleviate poverty we are called to give food, shelter and clothing, not to kill off the poor."

One leader at the G8 conference is likely to thwart the pro-abortion plans underway - US President George W. Bush.
