Text of Communiqués of the Archdiocese and Archbishop of Lyon
Communiqué of the Archdiocese of Lyon
Lyon, 29 June 2005
The media have announced that upon the initiative of the group, “Women Consecrated to Ministry,” that the pretended ordination to the Priesthood of Mrs. Genevieve Beney, residing in the Gard [region], would be held at Lyon on Saturday 2 July.
This act has the effect of an announcement. It fulfills none of the conditions required by the Catholic Church [for ordination]. Such a ceremony would constitute, without equivocation, a grave act of rupture with the Catholic Church.
The Archbishop of Lyon has also asked Mrs. Beney to renounce this project. There would be, in fact, no truth either to the words which would be pronounced, or to the acts which would be posited on this occasion. For many Catholics, it would be a source of wounding and unnecessary sufferings.
Let us, instead, “be solicitous, as the Apostle asks us, to keep unity in the Spirit by the bond of peace.” (Ephesians IV, 3).
Communiqué of the Bishop of Nîmes
The media have informed us of the upcoming “ordination to the Priesthood” of an inhabitant of our department, during a ceremony to be held on a boat in the region of Lyon.
Such a celebration – just like the “ordination to the Diaconate” which preceded it – constitute without equivocation possible a grave act of rupture with the Roman Catholic Church. In conformity with the Law of the Church, the concerned persons will have to bear the consequences.
It is evident that not one Catholic community can in any manner whatsoever support such an initiative. Within the communion of our Church, we should be solicitous to pray to the Spirit of truth, of unity, and of charity.
