Nike Endorses Same-Sex Civil Unions

PORTLAND, Oregon, July 12, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – An American Family Association release last Friday revealed that sportswear manufacturer Nike has endorsed a same-sex civil unions bill for its home state of Oregon.
AFA Chairman Donald E. Wildmon warned that an endorsement of same-sex civil unions is “a back door move to legalize homosexual marriage. Homosexual activists are using the ‘civil union’ approach as a back door approach to the legalization of homosexual marriage,” Wildmon explained. “Once they get their ‘civil union’ approved, they will then go to court to secure the right to marry.”
“Homosexual activists are working to get other corporations to follow the lead of Nike,” Wildmon wrote. “Many corporations are already donating large sums to homosexual organizations to support their agenda.” Wildmon pointed out that so far, Nike is the only major corporation using its weight to publicly influence policy in favor of same-sex civil unions.
Oregon’s Senate approved a civil unions bill Friday that would grant same-sex couples most of the benefits accorded to married heterosexual couples. The measure is not considered likely to pass the Republican-dominated House. Oregon was one of ten states that passed a constitutional amendment during the last federal election banning same-sex “marriage.”
Republican House Speaker Karen Minnis said it was unlikely the Senate bill would surface for a vote in the House. “It appears to us that the Senate bill is just marriage by another name,” a spokesman for Minnis, Chuck Deister, said, according to an AP report. “That is not consistent with what the voters told us just seven months ago.”
Wildmon calls on all concerned to contact Nike to voice concern over their support for the same-sex civil union legislation. “Sending a message to Nike will send a message to those corporations poised to support homosexual unions,” the AFA stated.
