Mexican Bishops call Abortion-Causing Morning After Pill “Lethal Weapon Against the Innocent”
MEXICO, July 22, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Catholic Archdiocese of Mexico’s newspaper Desde la Fe, carries a strong condemnation of President Vincente Fox’s plan to allow the morning after pill to be included in government sponsored health clinics for poorer areas. The editorial called the pill, “a lethal weapon against the innocent.”
The bishops wrote, “The wrong decision by authorities is leading to a moral and social degradation, the costs of which we are already paying in a society that has become increasingly inhumane. It is not by distributing contraceptives in bulk that we will resolve the health problems related to sexuality, because this activity is not merely genital, but is rather an integral part of the person.”
In Mexico City after Sunday Mass, Cardinal Norberto Rivera said, “This is a measure which Mexico does not need. There is no reason to place such a weapon in the hands of people in order to kill the innocent.”
The bishops of Mexico have been valiant in their opposition to the abortifacient Morning After Pill since its introduction to Mexico at the behest of the United Nations funded World Health Organization in 1999. MAP works by giving a high-dose of the same hormones found in regular birth control pills and one of its main functions is to prevent the existing embryonic child from implanting in the uterine lining.
The long-term medical consequences for women and girls of repeated use of MAP are unknown. United Nations sponsored organizations dedicated to reducing the world’s human population have been pushing MAP in all of the world’s developing nations, especially for young girls and the poor.
Cardinal Rivera warned that the decision “is very dangerous because it has been proven that this morning after pill can be abortifacient.”
