Pope Benedict: Marriage is Between a Man and a Woman "Admit No Alternatives"
VATICAN, June 6, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A letter from Pope Benedict XVI commits the Catholic Church to always proclaiming that marriage is between a man and a woman and that the Church can never admit alternatives.
In the letter released Saturday and addressed to Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, president of the Pontifical Council for the Family, Pope Benedict says, "The marriage bond, in which man and woman together constitute a life-long association, ordered by its very nature for the good of the spouses and the generation and education of children," is the basis of the family, the heritage and shared wealth of humanity. "Thus the Church cannot cease to announce that, in accordance with God's plans, marriage and the family are irreplaceable and admit no alternatives."
The letter which renews the invitation made by John Paul II to attend the Fifth World Meeting of Families, due to be held in Valencia, Spain, in July 2006, notes that "today more than ever, the Christian family has a most noble and inexorable mission, that of transmitting the faith. ... Parents are the first evangelizers of their children, precious gifts of the Creator, beginning with teaching them their first prayers. Thus a moral universe is created, one rooted in the will of God and in which children are raised in human and Christian values that give full meaning to life."

Liberal Gay Marriage Push Forces Pat O'Brien to Leave Liberal Party to Sit as an Independent
OTTAWA, June 6, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A champion of real marriage in the House of Commons has quit the Liberal Party because of the party's ramming through of bill C-38, which would force homosexual 'marriage' on all provinces. Pat O'Brien elected to sit as an independent after, he says, the Prime Minister broke his promise to him to have fair hearings on the gay 'marriage' bill. Unlike the jump to the Liberals of Belinda Stronach which was motivated by a cabinet post, O'Brien's leaving the Liberals is based on principle and done with the knowledge that it may cost him his political career.
Late last week O'Brien said that it became clear that the Liberal government was set to ram through the legislation before the summer recess just over two weeks from now. Today he told reporters that the Senate has agreed to sit as long as necessary during the summer to pass the bill.
O'Brien said he still believes there is a "slim" chance of stopping the legislation without bringing down the government on a non-confidence vote. "My objective is not to defeat the government but to slow down and ultimately defeat bill C-38," he said. However, O'Brien would not rule out voting against the government on confidence vote.

Sydney Cardinal Calls On Christians, Jews, Muslims to Work Together to Defend the Family
VICTORIA, Australia, June 6, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In his address to the 4th International Inter-Religion Abraham Conference, Cardinal Pell of the Sydney Archdiocese called on Christians, Jews and Muslims to work together to oppose what he called “the excesses of individualism”. The cardinal listed some of the most notable of these excesses, including “pornography, drug abuse, alcoholism, sexual promiscuity and abortion.”
“We who profess a religious faith have a solemn duty to uphold key moral values and to propose them to society,” said the Cardinal.
In light of the theme of the conference, Pell spoke of the necessity of focusing on the many similarities between the world’s monotheistic religions, especially those which claim Abraham as a common ancestor, in order that they may work peacefully towards common goals. “Muslims, Christians and Jews share common commitments which are embodied socially and which we can join together in proposing and defending to the wider society,” said the Cardinal.
He stressed that protecting the family must be of particular importance to the three religions, indicating that many of the so-called “excesses of individualism” arise as a consequence of poor family relations.
“People are foolish if they pretend that the consequences of family breakdown have no social impact,” the Cardinal said in his address to representatives of the three faiths. “One of the great cleavages that we are beginning to see opening up in our society is between children who come from stable and loving families, and those who do not. Those who are lost to drugs, suicide, violence, and alcoholism, are often those who do not have the personal and family resources and resilience to resist or avoid these perils. Family breakdown and instability are a growing cause of impoverishment.”
“Loving faithful marriage is the true foundation of the family,” he said. “I suspect that the haves and have-nots of the future will often be divided into those who have had a loving family upbringing and those who have never had this opportunity.”

Yet Another Study Confirms Gay Life Expectancy 20 Years Shorter
WASHINGTON, DC, June 6, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A new study which analyzed tens of thousands of gay obituaries and compared them with AIDS deaths data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), has shown that the life expectancy for homosexuals is about twenty years shorter than that of the general public. The study, entitled “Gay obituaries closely track officially reported deaths from AIDS”, has been published in Psychological Reports (2005;96:693-697).
In an interview with lifesitenews.com, Dr. Paul Cameron, the President of the Family Research Institute and the scientist who headed the study, indicated that he was not at all surprised by the findings. Rather he said that it only served as further confirmation for what had long been known and other studies have already shown.
One such study was conducted in Vancouver British Columbia and published in 1997 in the International Journal of Epidemiology (Vol. 26, 657-61: http://ije.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/26/3/657). It almost exactly mirrors the findings of Cameron’s research.
The Vancouver study was conducted by a team of pro-gay researchers, who, upon finding that pro-family advocates were using the results of their research as confirmation for their beliefs about the risks of the homosexual lifestyle, issued a statement trying to curb this unintended after-effect. “The aim of our work,” said the research team, “was to assist health planners with the means of estimating the impact of HIV infection on groups, like gay and bisexual men, not necessarily captured by vital statistics data and not to hinder the rights of these groups worldwide. Overall, we do not condone the use of our research in a manner that restricts the political or human rights of gay and bisexual men or any other group.”
Despite their attempts to downplay the practical consequences of their research, it is difficult to ignore that the study concluded with the statement that “under even the most liberal assumptions, gay and bisexual men in this urban centre [Vancouver, BC] are now experiencing a life expectancy similar to that experienced by all men in Canada in the year 1871.” Corresponding almost exactly with Cameron’s study, the Vancouver study indicated that “life expectancy at age 20 years for gay and bisexual men is 8 to 20 years less than for all men.”
Dr. Cameron indicated that he hoped the sobering results of the new study, in addition to such similar past studies, would finally cause a “reexamination”, saying that “our society needs to reassess what it’s doing with those who engage in homosexuality.”
The schools, he said, are doing a fine job educating children about dangerous activities such as smoking and the use of illegal drugs. But they are increasingly teaching that homosexuality is the same as heterosexual behaviour. “It certainly isn’t,” said Cameron. “Here we have homosexual activity, which, literally, is much worse than smoking,” and yet the schools continue to teach that it is normative and safe behaviour.
Cameron dismissed accusations of bias on account of his pro-life, pro-family beliefs, indicating that if the scientific objectivity of his research methods as well as the correspondence with the results of other similar studies isn’t evidence enough, his selection by the highly prestigious British medical journal and the Canadian medical association journal as a peer reviewer should serve as sufficient proof of his commitment to scientific integrity. “[The British and Canadian journals] wouldn’t even think of using someone that they didn’t think was both skilled and fair at analyzing and recommending which articles ought to be published” said the doctor.

Texas Governor Signs Abortion Parent Consent and Gay-Marriage Ban Bills
FORT WORTH, Texas (LifeSiteNews.com) – Two strongly pro-family bills, one of which was passed in the Texas Senate last week, have received the signature of Texas governor Rick Perry.
The first bill, an abortion parental-consent law, requiring the consent of parents in order for a minor to procure an abortion, comes into effect with the signature of governor Perry. It is a stronger law than the previous law governing minors seeking abortion, which only required that parents be notified of their daughter’s intentions.
The second bill is a constitutional amendment banning gay-marriage. The Texas public is set to vote on the amendment this November 7, making the governor’s signature merely ceremonial. "A nurturing home with a loving mother and loving father is the best way to guide our children down the proper path," said the governor in defense of the proposed amendment.
The signing of the bills took place at the Calvary Christian Academy. Addressing the crowd of supporters present, Perry explained his reasons for supporting both of the bills. “Families are the bedrock of civilization,” said the governor. “Marriage must be defended because it is the true glue that binds the very fabric of our society. For families to thrive, parents must be involved in their children’s decisions.”
Perry also spoke about the motivation for putting the gay-marriage ban before Texas’ voters as an exercise in democracy. He explained that even though same-sex marriages are illegal in Texas, the constitutional amendment is necessary to protect traditional marriage from being tampered with by activist judges. “Activist judges have used the bench as a platform to advance a narrow agenda,” said the governor.
A crowd of protestors was present. One man held a sign that said "Separate church and state -- keep America great." Jake Holbrook, who is the president of StandOut, a UT gay-rights lobby, said that he still had hope that the bills would be overturned by passing the issue on to some of the activist judges who Governor Perry had denounced in his speech. “That’s the nice thing about democracy” said Holbrook, “there’s always a way out after these things happen.”
Eighteen of the fifty states have already passed constitutional amendments banning gay marriage. Nine more are set to decide on the issue this fall.

Swiss Referendum Ushers in Civil Unions for Gays
GENEVA, June 6, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Swiss voters approved a law created last year that allows same-sex couples civil union status, with most of the same privileges accorded to married heterosexual couples – including inheritance rights, pensions, joint taxation, and the option of next-of-kin visiting rights for hospitals.
The “registered partnership” law created last year by Swiss lawmakers was challenged by a pro-family coalition, whose 50,000-strong petition ensured them the right to a referendum on the issue. Although 58 percent of voters nation-wide supported a change to allow same-sex couples legal status, regions with a high degree of opposition to the measure were centered in the predominantly Catholic cantons of Appenzell, Ticino and Valais, according to a Reuters report. Only 56 percent of the total population of 4.8-million actually took part in the vote.
On a positive note for pro-family advocates, the new legislation specifically outlaws adoption and assisted reproduction, including artificial insemination by same-sex couples.
Fribourg, Geneva and Lausanne Catholic diocesan spokesman Nicolas Betticher said the law was akin to a “pseudo-marriage” for homosexuals. Evangelical Party member Ruedi Aeschbacher, a campaign leader who opposed the law, described the loss as a “worrying development.”

Japan AIDS/HIV Rate Skyrockets with 80% Condom Use
TOKYO, June 6, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Japan is seeing skyrocketing levels of AIDS, HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, increasingly among middle school children and teenagers. The Japan Family Planning Association, a group affiliated with International Planned Parenthood Federation, began distributing condoms and promoting the free sex culture in 1982. Since then the rates of sexually transmitted diseases has steadily climbed.
According to UNAIDS statistics, among Japanese who are sexually active, the rate of condom use is 80%. Even so, the rate of AIDS infections has risen 14%, the same rate that it has been increasing in sub-Saharan Africa, although the total number of Japanese cases is so far comparatively low. The United Nations has inundated Africa with condoms and promoted the idea that sex is “safe” as long as the man uses a condom. Despite its disastrous record of not preventing AIDS, this method has been promoted in every country in which Planned Parenthood or other UN-affiliated groups have worked.
In 2004, a record 1,165 cases of AIDS/HIV infection were reported in Japan. Official statistics show that the AIDS infection rate is doubling every four years according to a 2004 report by the Japan Center for International Exchange.
The official estimate of approximately 10,000 AIDS/HIV cases in Japan could be only a quarter of the actual number. Satoshi Kimura, head of the AIDS Clinical Center at the Tokyo-based International Medical Center, estimates that between 20,000 and 30,000 people in Japan do not know they have the virus.

U.S. Appeals Court Upholds Striking Down of Virginia Law Banning Partial Birth Abortion
RICHMOND, June 6, 2005, (LifeSiteNews.com) The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, by a vote of 2-1, has upheld a ruling by U.S. District Judge Richard L. Williams of Richmond that declares a Virginia law banning a type of late-term abortion as unconstitutional due to its lack of an exception to protect a woman’s health.
The law, passed by the 2003 Virginia General Assembly, was challenged by The Center for Reproductive Rights. It called for a ban on “partial birth abortion”, where the child is partially delivered before being killed. The Virginia statute called it "partial-birth infanticide."
Judge Williams immediately blocked enforcement of the Virginia law on July 1, 2003, the day it went into effect, calling it a "no-brain case." He declared it unconstitutional six months later, after granting a plaintiff’s motion for summary judgment.
A similar law in Nebraska was struck down in 2000 for the same reason, namely, not having a ‘health exception’ clause.
Judge M. Blane Michael, of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, wrote in the majority opinion, which was joined by Judge Diana Gribbon Motz. In the ruling Jude Michael stated “Because the Virginia Act does not contain an exception for circumstance when the banned abortion procedures are necessary to preserve a woman's health, we affirm the summary judgment order declaring the act unconstitutional on its face,"
Judge Paul V. Niemeyer, who dissented from the majority position, said the Virginia statute differs substantially from the Nebraska law because it makes it a crime to kill a "human infant who has been born alive, but who has not been completely extracted or expelled from its mother."
The state could ask the full appeals court or the Supreme Court to review the decision.

European Gay Activists Becoming Increasingly Violent, Intolerant of Other Views
Call Pope Benedict “homophobe, AIDS accomplice”
Paris and Madrid, June 6, 2005, (LifeSiteNews.com) - Two events in Europe indicate that the culture war between those defending traditional marriage and those promoting same-sex marriage is continuing to escalate. As Canada’s Liberal government moves closer to pushing through its same-sex marriage law, Bill C-38, predictions of resulting social unrest may echo events already occurring in Paris and Madrid.
In Paris, France the Agence France-Presse (AFP) is reporting that an altercation broke out at the famed Notre-Dame Cathedral on Sunday when 20 members of the group “Act Up” gained entry and proceeded to perform a mock marriage of two lesbians. One of the activists was dressed as a priest and pronounced the two women married, while other members of Act Up chanted "Pope Benedict XVI, homophobe, AIDS accomplice."
Church security personnel pursued the gay rights activists as they fled the Cathedral. As a result clashes broke out outside the Paris landmark, during which Monsignor Patrick Jacquin suffered a minor neck injury.
Monsignor Jacquin is quoted in the AFP as saying: "They are savages. I was pushed to the ground and trampled, kicked in the neck.
"It's a scandal for these people to lash out at me and the Pope."
Jerome Martin, the president of Act Up Paris, participated in the demonstration. Mr. Martin claims the priest had exaggerated the actual events.
"We did not want to be aggressive with respect to the worshippers... the aggressive security detail wanted to rip up our banner," he said.
The demonstration took place to mark the first anniversary of France's first gay wedding, subsequently declared null and void by French courts, performed last year in the Bordeaux suburb of Begles. Earlier in the day the Act Up activists had gathered outside Paris city hall where they denounced homophobia and called for equal rights for gays and lesbians.
In Madrid, Spain, it was reported that death threats and slander against pro-life groups were broadcast over homosexual websites in response to a planned pro-life protest against a government plan to make homosexual unions equal to marriage.
The websites contain “clear criminal content”, stated Hazteoir.org, a Spanish civil rights watchdog site. The statements made by homosexual groups could be grounds for legal action against the moderators of such forums, who "have done nothing to erase these messages or expel those responsible.
"On some internet forums frequented by these (homosexual) groups, messages are being posted that openly incite violence against family organizations, the Catholic Church, and in general, against all those who disagree with their claims," the civil rights website reported.

Honorary Degree for Abortionist Morgentaler Sparks Letter Outlining Ridiculous Choice
LONDON, Ontario, June 6, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The University of Western Ontario’s decision to honour abortionist Henry Morgentaler has sparked an onslaught of letters, petitions and protests – one letter from Ontario lawyer Joseph P. Hamon to UWO VP of communications Ted Garrard, copied to LifeSiteNews.com, makes clear how ridiculous a choice Morgentaler really is.
Take, for example, that in 1998, Morgentaler’s Nova Scotia clinic was ordered by the court to pay $395,000 in damages for failing to properly counsel patients regarding post-abortion dangers – a decision upheld by a court of appeal.
In 1973, Hamon pointed out, a foreign student was admitted to hospital for 6 days after a botched abortion by Morgentaler. She later testified that the pre-abortion interview with Morgentaler consisted primarily about whether she could pay the $150 fee. A disciplinary hearing by the Professional Corporation of Physicians of Quebec ruled later to suspend Morgentaler's medical licence in 1976 for a year. The committee stressed that “the suspension was not only for doing illegal abortions but for doing them badly: for not holding a valid interview before the abortion, for failing almost completely to gather a case history of his client, for failing to perform the necessary pregnancy test or blood test, for not obtaining pathological examination of the ‘tissues’ removed and for failing to follow up the state of health of his patients afterward.” The panel declared that Morgentaler's behaviour reflected “an attitude which is primarily directed to protecting his fees.”
Based on his testimony before the Professional Corporation of Physicians of Quebec that he had committed 7,000 abortions, Morgentaler was ordered to pay $354,799 in unpaid taxes for the years 1969-72. “The disciplinary medical board deplored his practice as one which ‘confers a mercenary character on the doctor-patient relationship,’ and said it was ‘incapable of reconciling [Morgentaler's] behaviour with the humanitarian concern that [he] invoked throughout his defence.’”
In 1985, a Toronto woman claimed that after telling Morgentaler of her last minute decision to keep her baby, he “shoved a sanitary napkin in her mouth and did [the abortion] anyway.”
A call into the UWO media relations office was not returned by press time.

London, Ontario Catholic School Students' Pro-Life Demonstration Powerful, But Riles Some
LONDON, June 6, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The University of Western Ontario's controversial decision to give Canadian abortionist Henry Morgentaler an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at its June 16th convocation, continues to cause a stir. Among the growing opposition to this decision, student athletes of the London Catholic School board protested at a track and field meet at the UWO campus by wearing black wristbands.
"It sort of stands for all the (unborn) babies that have been killed in the moms' stomach," said 12 year-old Henry Peters, a long-distance runner.
The very powerful demonstration by the Catholic students has, however, raised the ire of some. Henry Svec, a psychologist who claims to be Catholic and runs a consultation service for educators and professionals, appeared Thursday on the CBC radio show, Ontario Morning, claiming that the London Catholic School board was using children for a private political agenda. "To me it's about . . . using children, adults and an organization using children to push their agenda," said Svec. That 'agenda' as Svec called it was the pro-life agenda which is supposed to be held by all Catholics.
Svec tried to present the issue as beyond the grasp of, and perhaps even injurious to the children participating in the track meet. "To suggest children have choice and can understand this whole issue of abortion . . . To suggest that children should be brought into this is absolutely ridiculous."
Svec also launched a personal attack on the professional judgement of Joe Rapai, the Catholic school board's education director. "I'm surprised that the director of education would have such a fundamental lack of knowledge about what children really need," said Svec.
Beyond that, Svec implied that Rapai was not telling the truth. The CBC interviewer noted that Mr. Rapai said parents approved of the demonstration. Svec retorted, "Well I think of course he's going to say that, but I think that obviously we need to talk to the parents as well."
Given Svec's venomous attacks listeners wondered about his motivation in railing against the wristband Morgentaler protest. However, after indicating his anti-Catholic bias, Svec's interest in the story became clearer. "Well it's no surprise that the Catholic school doesn't respect the rights of children, nor women, and I think that's another total issue," he said.
When allowed to speak for themselves, however, the students were more than capable of expressing the convictions that Dr. Svec insisted they were incapable of having. Nathan Vandersanden, who was running in the 1,500 metres yesterday, said, "This is just to say that abortions are wrong," he said of the wristbands. "All the parents decided to do this and I thought it was a pretty good idea."
