Nine Women Activists Fantasize they will Ordain Themselves in “International Waters” of the St. Lawrence
OTTAWA, June 8, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Nine women activists, eight American and one Canadian, have announced that on July 25 they will conduct their own “ordination” ceremony on a boat on the St. Lawrence River. The location, in the belief that their action would be of any interest to the local Catholic Church, was picked as ecclesiastically neutral territory of “international waters.”
Feminists have long contended that the Catholic priesthood is an office of political power in the world from which they are unjustly excluded. Their longstanding efforts to have women ordained, have fallen off the map of issues important to most Catholics. In most cases, the supporters of women’s ordination want the Church to endorse the full roster of demands of the sexual revolution; abortion, homosexuality, contraception, divorce et al.
As expected, the mainstream media, always in the market for a story that misrepresents the Catholic Church, have chosen to present this as a genuine ordination. Reuters ran a story that called the bogus stunt, “a test of Pope Benedict's determination to enforce the Vatican's ban on women's ordination.” The reality however, is that, in making a public renunciation of the Catholic religion, the women stand not to be negotiated with, but merely excommunicated for schism, the attempt to set up an alternate church. This was the response of the Vatican to the seven women who made a similar publicity stunt in 2002 in Germany in the middle of the Danube.
Reuters and the women themselves, however, seem to be ignorant of even the most elementary facts about the Roman Catholic Priesthood, primary among which is that only the Catholic Church can confer it.
Diogenes, the acerbic columnist and blogger of Catholic World News simply laughed at the notion that anyone in Rome would see this action as a threat to their authority. He writes, “Is this a ‘test’ for the Pope, or an eccentric fantasy played out by a small female cast?”
He writes, “If I told you that my Uncle Harry has proclaimed himself the Holy Roman Emperor, would you conclude that Harry is testing the legitimacy of the European Union? Or that Harry is a garden-variety nutcase?”
