Canada’s Blue Jays Major League Baseball Team Organizes Gay Pride Event
Proceeds to go to annual Toronto ‘Pride Week’ events
TORONTO, June 23, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Toronto Blue Jays, one of Canada’s most popular sports teams, is hosting the second of its annual “Pride Week” events to coincide with Toronto’s annual Gay Pride Week. In what may be an attempt to sell a more wholesome image of homosexuality to the public, the Blue Jays have taken the initiative to host a “Pride Day,” a homosexual-themed game played against the Washington Expos beginning at 7:07 pm. The gay choir, the Toronto Men’s Chorus will sing the Canadian national anthem.
Toronto gay activist, Mark Kari, who runs the website Gaybaseballdays.com, told the Globe and Mail that most major-league teams sponsor homosexual events, but that the Jays were one of the first to take a key role in organizing and promoting such an event.
Mr. Kari’s website says that the proceeds from the event will go to support the annual Pride Week events which have included simulated sex acts by naked men parading in the streets and lesbians performing strip shows. The Toronto events are among the largest in the world.
Despite a predominance of sports imagery in homosexual literature, the presence of ‘gay’ men in baseball remains controversial in the US where the game is still considered a bastion of old fashioned American family values. But political correctness is starting to take hold even here and a large number of major league teams have hosted “Pride” events that have endorsed the active homosexual lifestyle. In April 2005, Sports Illustrated ran a survey of its readers and found that the majority have no problem with homosexuals in professional sports.
Baseball however, may remain a family-friendly bastion for some time yet. Chicago White Sox designated hitter Carl Everett horrified media by succinctly stating what many consider to be a self-evident truth that most politicians are afraid to utter. He said in an interview for the July edition of Maxim magazine, “Two women can't produce a baby, two men can't produce a baby, so it's not how it's supposed to be. ...Being gay is wrong… I don't believe in gay marriages. I don't believe in being gay.”
