Diocese Tells Government Workers Who Promote Contraception Not to Receive Communion

OZAMIZ CITY, Misamis Occidental, Philippines, March 17, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Government workers who publicly support the Philippines population control Bill 3773, “Responsible Parenthood and Population Management Act,” which mandates a rule that restricts families to two children and introduces sex education for children and the distribution of artificial contraceptives, will be denied Holy Communion if they present themselves, a diocesan prelate said.
Prelate of the Diocese of Ozamiz, Monsignor Jesus Dosado, said Wednesday that civil workers who promote “anti-life policies” such as Bill 3773 are not worthy to receive the body of Christ, and will be refused. Those who privately support the population control measure will not be denied Communion, but should in good conscience not present themselves.
Bernardo Villegas, an economist and member of the Catholic society Opus Dei, warned that if the Philippines adopts Bill 3773, the country might be headed for a “demographic winter” – the lop-sided population demographic characterized by countries where population-control measures have dominated for decades. China and most of the developed world, for example, are examples of places where economic calamity is looming, as a result of worker shortage and an aging population.
Meanwhile, some government officials are telling those who oppose the population control measure to resign. Eastern Visayas province health director, Dr. Milagros Bacus, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer, “If you don't believe anymore in what your organization is doing, you're free to go.”
