European Parliament President Says Fighting “Moral Discrimination” Against Homosexuals is an EU “Duty”

Brussels, May 20, 2005, (LifeSiteNews.com) - The agenda to recognize homosexuality as normative throughout the world continues with a recent statement by Mr Josep Borrell Fontelles, President of the European Parliament made on the occasion of International Day against Homophobia, which will take place in 35 countries all over the world.

Mr. Fontelles, the former Spanish minister who went from being the controversial Socialist party leader to the president of the European parliament, took the position that homosexuality is a human right which should be recognized by everyone.

"As we are currently debating the Constitutional Treaty in many countries of the European Union, I wish today to recall one of the major principles of the Charter of Fundamental Rights: the non-discrimination principle. Whatever their origin, nationality, social background, religion or sexual orientation, all citizens of the Union have the same rights.”

Mr. Fontelles makes reference to the decision, made 15 years ago by the World Health Organization (WHO), to de-list homosexuality as a mental disorder. The WHO decision reflects that made by many national organizations, such as the American Psychiatric Association, since the early 1970’s.

The EU parliamentary president invoked the high sounding rhetoric of protecting the weak and defenceless in his remarks.
“The European Parliament has always fought for equality and the defence of human rights and supports the campaign against homophobia in the context of the wider struggle for the defence of human rights, which is one of the fundamental values of the European Union.

The remarks made fly in the face of reality since the EU, and many of its members, are actively engaged in denying individuals the basic rights such as life and freedom of religion, for example: abortion, euthanasia, rights to religious dress in France, etc.

 Most worrisome are the comments that seemingly indicate a dictatorial and totalitarian mindset. The EU president concluded his statement saying the EU had a duty to continue to struggle against discrimination and violence related to sexual orientation, in all countries, “by all means."
