Warsaw mayor bans gay parade for second time

Warsaw, Poland., May 20, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com)  Lech Kaczynski, mayor of Warsaw and leading presidential contender, promised to ban a gay rights parade for the second year in a row, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

The parade, normally scheduled for June 11, would conflict with plans to unveil a memorial to Gen Stefan Rowcki, a Polish underground leader during the Nazi occupation of Poland. Mayor Kaczynski, who is “against propagating gay orientation,” indicated that “Organizing a gay parade on that day is a joke.”

Last year Kaczynski banned the fourth Equality Parade amidst fears of conflict between homosexual groups and opponents who had planned a counter-demonstration. The leader of Equality Foundation, Tomasz Baczkowski, said that he and other organizers would try to appeal to regional authorities to reverse the ban.
