Canadian Federal Election Imminent – Monday Non-Confidence Vote Scheduled
By Steve Jalsevac
OTTAWA, November 25, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Monday is D-Day for Canada’s opposition parties as they are scheduled to debate and vote on a non-confidence motion tabled yesterday by Conservative leader Stephen Harper with the support of the Bloc Quebecois and NDP parties.
It is expected that passage of the motion is all but certain and that after losing the vote, Prime Minister Paul Martin will ask the governor general to dissolve Parliament Tuesday and set an election date for Jan. 16 or 23. The later date is considered more likely since the Liberals are said to want a long election period for strategic reasons.
Harper’s motion, as officially tabled on Thursday, was simply worded, “That this House has lost confidence in the government.” This was far simpler than a different wording he introduced Wednesday.
Wednesday’s motion stated, "That the House condemns the government for its arrogance in refusing to compromise with the opposition parties over the timing of the next general election, and for its 'culture of entitlement,' corruption, scandal and gross abuse of public funds for political purposes and, consequently, the government no longer has the confidence of the House." The Conservative leader was forced to move the simpler motion in order to retain the support of the Bloc and NDP parties.
All parties and interest groups are gearing up for what will certainly be a grueling and nasty election. The Liberals give every indication of planning to typically use every possible strategy, ethical and non-ethical, to protect their political empire and lengthy, near one-party rule over Canada.
The Globe and Mail reported yesterday that the Liberals are planning to run a negative election campaign that will peak near the end of the campaign during which time they will use most of their advertising budget to trash the opposition.
It remains to be seen whether the Liberals will be able to once again convince Canadians to swallow their skillfully manufactured charges against the Conservative opposition party and leader. The seemingly never ending stream of revelations, since the last election, of massive Liberal corruption and abuse of power, may have finally broken the almost hypnotic hold the Liberals have managed to maintain on their large eastern Canadian and ethnic voter core.
Most of Canada’s pro-life and pro-family organizations have recently been developing and implementing a new cooperative election strategy that they hope will significantly impact this crucial election. The removal of religious freedom and freedom of expression and conscience resulting from the imposition of same-sex ‘marriage” are seen as a last straw development motivating social conservative Canadians to finally become active in the political process.
