Chinese Government Forbids Catholic Seminaries to Teach against Abortion Says Congressional Report

Blocked Internet Discussion of New Pope

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

WASHINGTON, October 19, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Congressional-Executive Commission on China released its 2005 Annual Report last week, which detailed a myriad of deplorable human rights abuses routinely committed by the Chinese regime.  The Commission, created by Congress in October 2000 with the legislative mandate to monitor human rights and the development of the rule of law in China, reports that "The Chinese government monitors and inspects registered seminaries, where it is forbidden to teach anything contrary to Party policy, including Catholic moral teaching on abortion, euthanasia, contraception, and divorce."

Released on October 11, the report notes that the Chinese government interferes in the selection of Catholic bishops, a prerogative reserved to the Pope.

The Commission, consisting of nine Senators, nine members of the House of Representatives, and five senior Administration officials appointed by the President, reports that the transition between Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI was granted "perfunctory  recognition by granting the events minimal media coverage," but added that "public security officials also increased harassment of Catholics, detaining 13 clerics."   Moreover, the report indicates that "Chinese authorities also blocked discussion of the transition (between Popes) on domestic and international Web sites."

The Congressional report also notes that "The Chinese government continues to maintain a coercive population control policy that violates internationally recognized human rights standards in three ways. First, the Population and Family Planning Law limits the number of children that women may bear.  Second, this law coerces compliance by penalizing women who illegally bear a child with a ''social compensation fee,'' a fine that often exceeds an average family's annual income.  Third, although physical coercion to ensure compliance with population control requirements is illegal in China, reports persist of local officials using physical coercion to ensure compliance, and in one case Chinese officials attempted to physically coerce a visiting Hong Kong woman to have an abortion."

Those local officials are encouraged in their extremism by the fact that "Local officials who fail to meet provincial and central government birth rate targets face loss of bonuses and denial of promotions."

After finding these and a host of other abuses, the commission found "no improvement overall in human rights conditions in China over the past year, and increased government restrictions on Chinese citizens who worship in state-controlled venues or write for state-controlled publications."

However the commission was not apologetic for its report noting that it is for the good of China and its inhabitants that the truth come out and the needed reforms take place. "This is an honest report that takes a comprehensive look at human rights and rule of law in China," said Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE), the Commission's Chairman. "China's leaders will not achieve their long-term goal of social stability and continued economic development without building a future that includes human rights for all Chinese citizens. China's development will impact all of Asia, and the world. Respect for human rights must be part of that future," Hagel said.

EU Politicians Pressure European Pro-life Countries to Drop Abortion Restrictions

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

STRASBOURG, October 19, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The European Union’s Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted a resolution earlier this month titled Women and Religion in Europe, which recommends that countries “ensure that women are not subjected to religiously inspired policies and laws [such as] abortion law[s].”

Maintaining laws that protect the most innocent and helpless members of society – the unborn – in contrast to a so-called woman’s right to choose to kill their unborn children, PACE maintains, is a form of “intolerance and discrimination” aimed at women by what they decry as male-dominated religion – an obvious reference to Roman Catholicism, a faith with a male-dominated hierarchy and a prohibition against abortion.

The resolution, the brain-child of Swiss Group of the European People’s Party, Mme Rosmarie Zapfl-Helbling, also strongly condemned religions that support a “patriarchal culture which holds up the role of wife, mother and housewife as the ideal,” as another form of discrimination against women.

During heated debate on the resolution, the Catholic Church was further blamed for the transmission of sexually transmitted disease because of its prohibition against contraceptives. It might be therefore be speculated that Zapfl-Helbling’s belief is that if condoms were worn 24 hours per day like underwear, there would be no STDs regardless of the sexual proclivities of the wearer.

In another portrayal of intolerance displayed by Zapfl-Helbling and her PACE co-conspirators, the resolution states that governments should “ensure that the freedom of religion and the respect for culture and tradition are not accepted as a pretext to justify violations of women’s rights, including when underage girls are forced to submit to religious codes [where] their access to contraception is barred by their family or community.”

In related news, in a new bid to target European Union member states with pro-life constitutions, the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education (RFSU), a radically pro-abortion group, sponsored an event titled Abortion - Making It a Right for All Women in the EU, in cooperation with 17 Members of European Parliament (MEPs) representing 12 different member countries. The event hosted women from Catholic European countries who contend that prohibition on abortion in their country is a violation of their human rights.

Alternative Embryonic Stem Cell Procedures Still Problematic Says Christian Medical Association

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

WASHINGTON, DC, October 19, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Christian Medical Association, the largest association of faith-based physicians in the U.S., today critiqued two recently reported developments in embryonic stem cell research that are purportedly designed to allay ethical concerns over treatment of human life. Both methods were reported in the October 17 online edition of Nature.

While applauding the search for ethical alternatives, the association's leaders say the procedures do not circumvent the moral dilemmas of destroying living human beings or exposing them to harm.

One procedure involves programming an embryo genetically so that it cannot successfully implant and develop in the uterus to become a baby.

CMA Executive Director Dr. David Stevens said, "Just because scientists have created a genetic time bomb in the embryo does not change its essential human nature. If a scientist removed most of the intestines of a newborn baby, that action would cause the baby to die later. That wouldn't give them the right to kill the child in order to transplant its organs."

Another procedure involves removing a cell from an eight-cell embryo, then developing that removed cell in order to harvest embryonic stem cells.

Dr. Stevens noted, "The cell taken from the embryo to start an embryonic stem cell line, a separated blastomere, is actually a totipotent cell that can develop into a complete organism--a human baby. This process is essentially artificial identical twinning."

"Embryologists have long recognized that these early developing human cells called blastomeres have a regulative nature--a strong tendency for the system to be restored to wholeness. And in fact, the developmental capacity of separated blastomeres has been confirmed in animals, including in primates."

"So to emphasize that the original embryo is not killed is actually to employ a scientific sleight of hand. Researchers using this process may not destroy the first embryo, but they do destroy the second one."

"This method of research exposes the surviving human being to potential risk. Even if the surviving embryo is implanted in a womb, no one knows the long-term effect of preimplantation genetic diagnosis on children born after being subjected to the procedure. How many of us, if we could somehow be given the ability to guide our own embryonic development, would permit researchers to take out one of our first eight cells?"

Dr. Stevens added, "We applaud studies using animals to figure out ethical ways to obtain embryonic stem cells apart from the creation and destruction of human embryos. So far, however, no one appears to have accomplished this feat. Meanwhile, the good news is that adult stem cells are already providing real cures for real patients."

CMA Associate Executive Director Dr. Gene Rudd added, "While it is reasonable to fund basic science research in hopes of future benefit, that research should not compromise our ethical principles, and it should not be funded to the exclusion of more promising cures. Clinical trials and treatments using adult stem cells currently provide verifiable progress in treating the very diseases that embryonic stem cell researchers boast that they may cure in 10 years. Why should desperately ill people suffering from Parkinson's, paraplegia, diabetes and massive heart attacks have to wait for embryonic stem cell research to somehow try to catch up with adult stem cell research?"

Dr. Phil Promoting Homosexuality and Abortion Groups

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

LOS ANGELES, October 19, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Christian groups are calling on the popular television psychologist Phillip C. McGraw, Ph.D, a.k.a. Dr. Phil, to stop promoting Planned Parenthood and the homosexual lifestyle.

McGraw touts Planned Parenthood as a trustworthy, independent resource on issues relating to sexuality, as evidenced by a recent broadcast in which he challenges a guest who asserts that abstinence is the true reason for the falling U.S. teenage pregnancy rate.

“The fact is that the research does not support what you’re saying,” Dr. Phil claimed. “If you look at the massive studies that are nationwide, if you look at the Planned Parenthood studies, the fact of the matter is that kids who go through a thorough sex education program of which making condoms available with some anonymity…that kids do use them when they have them.”

Douglas R. Scott, president of Life Decisions International (LDI), said McGraw's response has three effects: “First, it makes McGraw look like he knows more about the subject than he actually does because he has an emphatic style, which is typical Dr. Phil deception. A doctorate does not make one an authority in every discipline and McGraw should stop masquerading as such. Second, it advertises and legitimizes Planned Parenthood. Third, it peddles the group as an agenda-free, independent research agency. Planned Parenthood ‘studies’ (actually conducted by its Alan Guttmacher Institute [AGI] affiliate) are usually long on opinion and short on ‘study.’”

Dr. Phil goes on to claim that “every clinical study” supports the view that sex education that promotes the so-called safe-sex message has been successful at curbing teenage pregnancy rates. “Every clinical study?” Scott retorted. “"Studies done by whom? And how? All were ‘clinical studies?’” Scott said that “just like Planned Parenthood, McGraw's claims about abstinence programs are bogus.”

“Trusting AGI on sex is like trusting Phillip Morris on smoking,” Scott asserts.

Dr. Phil also promotes homosexuality as an acceptable lifestyle. Continuing in his authoritative but questionable vein, Dr. Phil, on another show, claimed that “Homosexuality is not a learned behavior. A sexual orientation is inherited; you are wired that way,” he added.

Clinton Wows Canadians with Globalist Platitudes and Hypnotic Charisma

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

TORONTO, October 19, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Even in the fifth decade of their Trudeau-inspired national identity crisis, the one thing that Canadians, particularly Torontonians, can agree upon is their hatred for America, particularly for the traditional Christian values espoused by its current president, George W. Bush.

Canadian anti-Americanism is, paradoxically, perhaps best expressed in its adulation for one of the US’s most infamously unscrupulous and immoral leaders, former president William Jefferson Clinton. Clinton gave a day-long motivational seminar, called The Power Within, to 5,000 paying listeners in Toronto yesterday while scooping up his usual average $160,000 fee for the event. The former president, whose administration was the most scandal-plagued in US history, urged Canadians to put an end to child poverty and terrorism by embracing the world’s religions.

“I hope to help create more of a global conscience, a shared consensus about the challenges we share going forward into the future. We have to find a way to reach that other half of people in the world who don't know we care about them,” he said to the audience of business leaders.

Event organizers called him, “one of the greatest leaders in the history of presidents” and an “inspiring” presence. Christian Darbyshire of TinePublic Inc., that organized Monday's forum on Canada-U.S. relations in London said, “He’s probably more influential these days now . . .than he was as the president.”

Certainly the former president it likely much richer than when he was president given the millions of dollars earned from his many speaking engagements. He also spoke to a sold out crowd of 4500 in London, Ontario on Monday and has another sold out engagement to 4,000 monied groupies in Calgary today.

According to those in attendance the former president’s appeal has more to do with an ability to manipulate an audience and his almost hypnotic personal charisma than anything unique about what he said. Mike Strobel, a columnist for the Toronto Sun, said his speech was “flatter than an Arkansas rice field. War, peace, AIDS, global warming, nuclear threats, the rich, the poor, blah, blah, blah, blah.”

To those who keep watch on the agenda of the globalist New Left, however, Clinton’s platitudes and soundbites are only too familiar.

They are simplified versions of those proposed by the Canadian guru of the left, Maurice Strong and former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev in their Earth Charter, a document adopted by the United Nations that Clinton was rumoured to soon be heading as the next Secretary General. The Earth Charter proposes to replace all the religions of the world with pantheistic nature worship in which the human race is seen as a kind of disease to be controlled with abortion and sterilization.

The adoring crowd greeted the disgraced former US president in a style usually reserved for rock stars. Torontonians are particularly known as an appreciative audience for the globalist ideas common to the jet-setting New Left internationalists that Bill Clinton so thoroughly embodies.

42% of IVF Ova Carry Genetic Abnormalities New Studies Show

Findings prompt calls for more “search-and-destroy” eugenic screening

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

CYBERSPACE, October 19, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In vitro fertilization is coming under increasing criticism as unsafe and unreliable and likely to end with genetic abnormalities. Now, some IVF scientists are saying that the high rates of genetic problems associated with IVF can be traced to defects in the ova used for the creation of embryonic children.

The BBC reports that ova used for the creation of embryos in the lab often carry genetic defects and more IVF specialists are recommending that all ova be screened. Currently, the guidelines that regulate IVF in Britain call for screening of ova in women over 35 for abnormal numbers of chromosomes.

Three new studies have shown that on average 42% of ova generated for IVF carry some genetic abnormalities that would prevent a child created from them being brought to term. Some experts are suggesting that the drugs used to stimulate “hyperovulation” are to blame. One doctor, Peter Nagy of Reproductive Biology Associates in Atlanta said the findings were like a “rewriting” of the textbooks. “These defects should not be present in such a high proportion of patients,” he said.

The discovery, predictably, is prompting calls for more use of pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, (PGD) a process that examines a single cell of an early-term embryo for abnormal genes. The process can sometimes directly cause the death of the embryo, but more importantly, is regularly used as a “search and destroy” method of eliminating children deemed genetically “unfit.”

Dr Jeffrey Nelson of the Huntingdon Reproductive Center in California urged the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) to relax its already notoriously lenient guidelines and allow more “screening” for embryos. He said,  “I think there's an argument that can be made to say they should be more lenient.”

Increasingly IVF is being revealed as a dangerous and unreliable method of addressing the fertility crisis. Many women are convinced that they can indefinitely postpone childbearing and simply pay for a child when they are ready. Most people are not aware that the IVF process has at best only a 25% success rate, that the treatments are painful and often dangerous and that they result in the deaths of the great majority of children created by them.

Spanish AIDS Activists Slam Catholic Pharmacists’ Refusal to Sell Condoms

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

MALAGA, Spain, October 19, 2005, (LifeSiteNews.com) - Some members of the Spanish Association of Catholic Pharmacists, citing “conscientious objection,” have refused to sell condoms at their pharmacies in spite of intense pressure.

Alicia Cueto, secretary general of the Anti-AIDS Association of Malaga, states that the position taken by these pharmacists is a “very grave problem”. However, a spokesperson for the College of Pharmacology in Malaga said that the pharmacists in question are well within their rights.

In a local paper the pharmacists say their decision rests on the belief that selling condoms “involves a clear incitement to murder” since it gives the false impression that it fully protects against the AIDS virus.

Miers Update

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

October 19, 2005, (LifeSiteNews.com) - U.S. President Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers for the Surpeme Court has become one of the most controversial and confusing actions by the president since he first won the presidency.

Is Miers the right choice for the position? Well, that depends on which of the many conservative voices one listens to. Arguments are compelling on both sides, although at the moment the movement to have Bush start over with another choice seems to have gained the upper hand.

One thing is certain. The selection of not just this Supreme Court replacement but also the next one or two is crucial for the survival of democracy in the United States.

The activist abuse of power by the current judicial oligarchs dominatiing the Supreme Court has had a devastating and corrupting effect on the U.S. legal and legislative landscape and if allowed to continue further could threaten the very survival of the Republic. This would in turn negatively affect other democracies in the world which are dependent upon the US for the continuation of their freedoms.

So, the massive media attention on the Miers nomination, although perhaps sometimes excessive, is nonetheless mostly warranted. This is a most serious issue.

With this in mind, LifeSiteNews.com will attempt to provide its readers with a summary of links to significant stories on the nomination and excerpts from some of the items. We hope this will help you determine what indeed is the best solution to this currently confusing situation requiring perhaps the wisdom of Solomon.

Sexism and Other Silliness - Concerned Women for America
There’s new trouble in River City, my friends, and it starts with “M” and that stands for “Miers.”   Maybe it’s time to listen to all the women who’ve said for years that it’s sexist and patronizing to pick a Supreme Court nominee from only those who wear or burn bras. Wasn’t it the feminists’ favorite Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg who said “not just any woman will do” as a Supreme Court justice? Refresh my recollection on who called it sexism.

Too many yes-men - Linda Chavez
The president is a smart man, but he's in deep trouble. And no one in the White House seems willing to tell him why, which is where an official fool -- or White House jester, if you prefer -- would come in handy. Apparently no one stepped forward to warn the president what a monumentally bad idea he'd come up with when he selected Miers over dozens of other, better-qualified candidates.  Instead of listening to what conservatives are actually saying about the Miers nomination, the White House strategy is to attack the critics. We are suddenly the enemy: elitists, sexists, disloyal, and don't really represent anyone anyway.

Give Miers a Chance – National Catholic Register Editorial
We wonder: Would professorial constitutional experts really be more likely to overturn Roe v. Wade than an evangelical Christian woman who, as president of the Texas State Bar, took on the American Bar Association over its stance on abortion?  No specialized knowledge is necessary to understand and apply the principles our country was founded on. If Bush wants to seat a pro-life justice who can win confirmation onto the court instead of undergoing a gargantuan struggle over one who possibly can’t, then why not let him?

No Judicial Experience May Be Refreshing
Her lack of judicial experience need not necessarily be a disqualifier. The United States Constitution is an uncomplicated document, written in rather elementary English and quite straightforward, that citizens of the States and after ratification of the United States could understand it. “Legalese” terminology and lawyers' words of art are omitted. Some 41 of 107 Justices and nine of 17 Chief Justices never previously sat on a court. Sometimes a Justice without prior judicial experience turns out to be exceptionally competent. Byron R. White and Rehnquist come to mind. The evidence may establish that she’s a pit bull who if confirmed would appreciate, understand and defend the Constitution as written

Christian and Pro-Life Leader Takes Issue with White House's Assertion that Being Pro-Life and Opposed to Abortion Will Not Impact How One Rules on the Supreme Court
Rev. Patrick Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalition - Those White House comments sound more like the views of Senator Clinton, Kerry or Kennedy on abortion rather than a President who supports the culture of life. Those senators believe one can hold a personal pro-life position on abortion but it should have no impact on how they enact laws or make public policy. Sadly, it appears the Bush Administration feels the same way Mahoney asserts that particular position taken by the White House on abortion will have a devastating long term impact on the entire pro-life movement as it will allow public officials to say they are personally pro-life but support policies and laws that do not affirm the dignity of life.
http://www.earnedmedia.org/cdc1019.htm

The Last Straw - Gerard V. Bradley – National Review
The reason why I oppose her confirmation — even if she still believes what she said in 1989 — is this: now we are going to have the fight within the Senate and in the media which conservatives such as myself have all along called for. Unless Miers repudiates her 1989 answers — and, in that case, see above — Schumer & Co. are going to treat her as if she will overrule Roe. Very well. But if we are going to have a climactic battle in the Senate over Roe, we need to have it on considerably better ground. Miers is scarcely the person anyone would choose to make the long awaited case against Roe, with the whole pro-choice phalanx put up against her. I mean no insult whatsoever in saying that Harriet Miers she simply is not up to the job of cogently describing, defending, and justifying before the world what will go into the history books as the most important constitutional law decision since 1954.
http://bench.nationalreview.com/archives/080113.asp

Slouching Towards Miers - Robert Bork
With a single stroke -- the nomination of Harriet Miers -- the president has damaged the prospects for reform of a left-leaning and imperialistic Supreme Court, taken the heart out of a rising generation of constitutional scholars, and widened the fissures within the conservative movement. That's not a bad day's work -- for liberals. … the quality of her thought and writing demonstrates absolutely no "ability to write clearly and argue incisively." By passing over the many clearly qualified persons, male and female, to pick a stealth candidate, George W. Bush has sent a message to aspiring young originalists that it is better not to say anything remotely controversial, a sort of "Don't ask, don't tell" admonition to would-be judges. It is a blow in particular to the Federalist Society, most of whose members endorse originalism.
