Pro-Life T-Shirt Day 2006
by Hilary White
STAFFORD, VA., April 24, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – American Life League, (ALL), one of the most prominent and influential pro-life organizations in the US, is announcing Tuesday, April 25th as “National Pro-life T-shirt Day.” They are encouraging the wearing of a pro-life t-shirt to school or work by all participants.
“Join thousands nationwide by showing everyone that we are the majority — that we are a strong and determined voice for the babies.” ALL announced on its website.
Pro-life t-shirts have made waves in public schools where students are often told not to wear them for fear of “offending” people. Pro-life students have been subject to harassment from school officials, teachers and even the ACLU.
In a letter to participants, the Thomas More Law Center for Law and Justice, the public interest law firm that has handled, and won, many of the cases, said that the wearing of the shirts are protected under the US Constitution’s First Amendment that guarantees freedom of expression.
The US Supreme Court ruled in 1969, “In our system, state-operated schools may not be enclaves of totalitarianism…Students may not be regarded as closed-circuit recipients of only that which the State chooses to communicate. They may not be confined to the expression of those sentiments that are officially approved.”
ALL recommends that students wearing pro-life t-shirts to school download The Thomas More Society’s letter and show it to school administrators. The group gives further legal advice on the website to students willing to take on the challenge of witnessing to the dignity of the unborn in their public schools.
ALL says, “Wearing a pro-life shirt will open eyes, spark discussion, and save lives. It’s effective, easy, and something that even the meekest of persons can do to take a stand.”
The group offers a variety of shirts which can be ordered online through their website.
Some of the t-shirts that have made waves – and gone to court – have included the now-famous: “You will not silence my message /You will not mock my God /You will stop killing my generation.”
This year the group is featuring shirts that read, “Abortion: the leading cause of death in America, (200,000 every year),” and “Help cure abortion.”
