Another group of women admit their abortions in a different wayBEVERLY HILLS, August 2, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Ms. magazine has initiated an on-line and print campaign inviting women to celebrate the murder of their unborn children by surgical abortion. The campaign is a protest against the South Dakota abortion ban.

“I Had an Abortion” is the headline now appearing on Ms. magazine’s web site. Abortion activism is nothing new to the magazine: “I Had an Abortion” was also the headline for a petition that appeared in the 1972 debut edition, when 53 women admitted that they had procured abortions, “despite state laws redering (sic) the procedure illegal,” the web site declares.

“Thirty-three years after Roe, Ms. created a new petition so that women can speak out about abortion in even larger numbers,” the web site proclaims. The petition asserts as “absurd” that a state could ban the killing of the unborn. The South Dakota ban has been stayed pending a November plebiscite. Ms. Magazine also bemoans that 17 states have introduced trigger laws, or pre-Roe bans to ban abortion in the event that the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.

“A myriad of restrictions already limit access to abortion in the U.S. for poor women, young women, and women in the military,” the petition bewails. “We know it is time again for women of conscience to stand up and speak truth to power.”

“In a continued attempt to normalize the act of abortion, some women in the pro-abortion movement have taken absurdity to a new level with a campaign bragging about their past abortions,” commented Judie Brown, president of American Life League. “These women are celebrating an act of violence that has proven traumatic for millions of mothers and deadly for their innocent preborn children.”

“The South Dakota abortion law in particular speaks volumes about the fact that abortion takes the life of an innocent preborn baby and is always wrong,” said Brown, “and similar legislation is being crafted in other states. It is obvious by the rhetoric of the petition that abortion supporters feel threatened by such legislation that will save the lives of an untold number of children.”

In 2001, Ms. accused post-abortion counseling groups of “exploiting” women who have had abortions. Writer Cynthia Cooper contended that “anti-choice” efforts to educate women about post-abortion emotional problems are premised on a “bogus affliction invented by the religious right” to make women feel guilty. Post-abortion outreach and healing programs are similarly ridiculed as nothing more than cynical attempts to “use” women by having them work for the overthrow of “abortion rights.” (See LifeSiteNews.com coverage: http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2001/aug/01081502.html)

“The pro-abortion crowd denies the existence of post-abortion trauma, but we know of far too many women who’ve experienced long years of pain and regret after aborting their children,” said Brown. “If these people really cared about women, they would offer these mothers an opportunity to mourn the deaths of their children instead of encouraging them to praise the wholesale destruction of these innocent human beings.”

According to a letter to the editor written by Dr. Barry De Veber last year, a study sponsored by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario showed in 2001 that 41,000 women who had abortions had five times the number of hospital admissions for psychiatric problems, compared to a similar number of women who had no abortion. Additionally, a study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal in 2003 showed an increase in the number of psychiatric admissions among lower-income women who had induced abortions. Finally, a Finnish study of the records of 600,000 women showed a six-fold increase in suicides in post-abortion women compared to those with a live birth, and three times the incidence of women in general.
