Israeli Legislature Approves First Hearing on Bill Reversing Gay Marriage Ruling
Ruling had granted recognition to five homosexual couples married in Toronto, Canada
By Gudrun Schultz
JERUSALEM, Israel, December 7, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A measure that would prevent a High Court decision to recognize foreign homosexual “marriages” from taking effect passed first reading in the Knesset Wednesday, Haaretz.com reported yesterday.
Members of the Knesset passed the measure in a 33-31 vote during accelerated proceedings. The bill would prevent homosexual couples married outside the country from receiving recognition in Israel unless legislation permitting homosexual unions was first in place.
A six to one ruling by the High Court of Justice two weeks ago granted official recognition to five homosexual couples married in Toronto, Canada.
Rabbi Yehuda Levin, the Special Emissary to Israel for The Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada and The Rabbinical Alliance of America, told LifeSiteNews.com last month that the incursion of the homosexual movement into Israel was a “holocaust of the spirit.”
“[O]n a certain level, even anti-Semitism that leads to the destruction of the Jewish people, is not the ultimate evil,” Rabbi Levin said. “The ultimate would be to take the Jew, or anybody else, and attempt to destroy them spiritually. That would be the ultimate holocaust.”
Rabbi Levin called on Christian and Muslims to participate in the struggle to keep the “militant homosexual agenda” out of the Holy Land.
“In as much as this is a Jewish struggle, for everyone who finds the Holy Land holy it is obligatory on them around the world to rally together with the forces who stand for morality.”
“If people of faith are serious enough then there’s a hope to stem the tide of immorality,” Rabbi Levin said. “But if we turn the other cheek to this evil, then we will all suffer worldwide. Because as the holy land goes, so by extension, will other areas of the world go. It will incur God’s wrath.”
Knesset Members from Yisrael Beiteinu, United Torah Judaism and the National Union-National Religious Party were among those who supported the measure in the first hearing.
Israel’s Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was among those opposed to reversing the High Court ruling.
