Leading United Nations Abortion Advocate a Prof at a Pontifical Catholic University
By John-Henry Westen
NEW YORK, February 7, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Silvia Pimentel, has distinguished herself as one of the leading promoters of abortion on the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). Elected to sit on the committee in January 2005 and currently serving as Vice Chair, Pimentel is one of the 23 'experts' on the UN body which monitors compliance with the UN convention of the same name.
Several pro-life groups which monitor UN proceedings expressed to LifeSiteNews.com their frustrations with the abortion push coming from the CEDAW committee. Jeanne Head, the UN representative for the National Right to Life Committee told LifeSiteNews.com, "Basically the CEDAW has been misinterpreting the convention by promoting the change of abortion laws in country after country."
Thomas Jacobson, the UN representative for Focus on the Family, told LifeSiteNews.com, "The CEDAW committee pressures countries on abortion especially countries where it is still illegal or highly restricted." Jacobson explained that "There is no right to abortion or reproductive health services in the CEDAW covenant" and thus countries which have signed on to the treaty are not bound to permit abortion in order to comply with it.
Sam Singson, the UN lobbyist for Campaign Life Coalition agreed with her colleagues saying, "Unfortunately abortion pushing seems to have become normal operating procedure in the CEDAW committee."
While it may not be surprising that a CEDAW committee member encourages countries to permit abortion, even though abortion does not fall within the UN committee's mandate, the fact that Pimentel is a Professor of Legal Philosophy at the Pontifical Catholic University of Sao Paulo is raising eyebrows.
A search on the Catholic university's website (http://www.pucsp.br/ ) reveals over 70 entries boasting of their celebrated professor.
Pimentel, a long-standing feminist activist and Brazilian jurist, is known in her own country as an abortion advocate. She, at least until her UN duties commenced, coordinated the Brazilian section of the Committee of Latin America and the Caribbean for the Defense of Women's Rights (CLADEM), an openly pro-abortion group.
Pimentel's activities in promoting abortion in her homeland as coordinator for CLADEM were outlined in the group's website which is no longer available online. The website boasted of the group's activities in 2004 which included the following excerpt: "CLADEM accepted being co-sponsor of the demonstration in Washington (organized by the Feminist Majority, NARAL Pro-Choice America, National Organization for Women, Planned Parenthood, National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health and the Black Women's Health Imperative) which objective is to support abortion and reproductive freedom." (LifeSiteNews.com retained a cached version of the website which may be viewed here: http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2006_docs/SylviaPimentel.pdf )
In the most recent round of CEDAW committee meetings which ended last week, the UN body took up compliance reports and made recommendations on eight countries. During the meetings concerning Togo and Thailand, Pimentel promoted abortion.
A UN press release on the meeting with the Togolese representatives records this intervention from Pimentel: "Ms. PIMENTEL, expert from Brazil, said that risks associated with unwanted pregnancies, such as unsafe abortions, were factors that aggravated maternal mortality, and asked whether the 2002-2006 national health development plans had led to a decrease in the rate of maternal mortality caused by abortions. She noted that only therapeutic abortions are allowed by the Togo Government, and asked whether Parliament would consider extending the reasons for justifying the interruption of pregnancy besides therapeutic ones." (see the full release here: http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs/2006/wom1529.doc.htm )
Similarly, the UN press release on the committee's recommendations to the Thai delegation records thie intervention from Pimentel: "Ms. PIMENTEL, expert from Brazil, asked if the country had policies in place to raise awareness on common responsibilities of men and women in the area of reproductive health. According to the report, the use of contraceptives had reached about 8 per cent in Thailand, but women still bore primary responsibility for contraception. Unplanned pregnancies often resulted in illegal abortions. She wanted to receive more detailed information on measures taken by the Government to diminish risks to women's health and to review existing legislation to protect women's reproductive rights." (see the full release here: http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs/2006/wom1531.doc.htm )
From the outset in her new position at CEDAW, Pimentel advocated abortion. In January 2005, the committee urged Paraguay to legalize abortion. A UN release records Pimentel as saying, "Complying with the Convention meant the Government must address maternal mortality and clandestine abortions. Did the Government have concrete strategies to comply with the Committee's previous recommendations?" (see former coverage: http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2005/jan/05011706.html )

Family-Friendly Films Consistently Translate Into Box Office Success, Authoritative Study Shows
By Terry Vanderheyden
HOLLYWOOD, February 8, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Millions of moviegoers are lining up to see family-friendly movies reflecting traditional values, according to the results of an annual study of the domestic box office. Statistics from the survey show that the public’s choices for their favorite films – which they vote for with their wallets – veer sharply from the selections by the various awards shows and critics’ associations.
According to research conducted by the Christian Film & Television Commission™ from data compiled by Nielsen EDI for its Annual Report to the Entertainment Industry, 80 percent of the 10 most popular movies had strong or very strong moral content and acceptability ratings. In addition, only one of the top 10 movies, and only three of the top 25, were rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
The Report to the Entertainment Industry shows that movies with no or very few incidences of nudity, foul language and violence earned an average of $45,001,733 per movie, which was nearly $18 million more per movie, or 65 percent better than movies that contained those elements. Movies with the Commission’s low acceptability ratings earned only $27,307,984 on average. In fact, 70 percent of the 10 most popular movies in 2005 had either no sexual content or only light or implied sexual references.
“Every year, our financial analysis proves that good guys always finish first,” said Ted Baehr, chairman and founder of the Christian Film & Television Commission™. “Movies with traditional Judeo-Christian values and heroic virtues always do best at the box office.”
Baehr’s group rated 70 percent of the top 10 as acceptable for either older teenagers and adults or families with younger children.
Baehr’s Annual Report to the Entertainment Industry includes an analysis of all the major movies released by the movie industry and will be revealed at the MOVIEGUIDE® 14th Annual Faith & Values Awards Gala, to be held Thursday, March 2, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Legacy Lives on as Coretta Scott King's Niece Works to End Abortion
"How can the dream survive if we murder the children?"
By John-Henry Westen
STATEN ISLAND, February 7, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - This week, Priests for Life (PFL), the movement of pro-life priests, commended to the Lord the soul of Coretta Scott King, with prayers for the comfort of her family, and with fond recollections of the ministry of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
In a statement PFL President Fr. Frank Pavone said "Dr. King made it clear that he was not simply fighting for the Black man. He was fighting for the equality of every human life. We are honored to continue Dr. King's legacy in our day by fighting for the equality of the unborn child."
Moreover PFL revealed that the niece of Coretta and Martin King Dr. Alveda King is on the pastoral staff of the organization and "works full time for an end to abortion", declaring, "How can the dream survive if we murder the children?"
Alveda is the mother of six children and a grandmother. She has also served on the boards and committees of numerous organizations, including the Silent No More Awareness Campaign. Currently, Alveda serving as Director of African American Outreach for Gospel of Life, headed up by Father Frank Pavone of Priests for Life.
During the years of the Civil Rights Movement, led by her Uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Alveda's family home was bombed in Birmingham, Alabama in the heat of the struggle. "Daddy's house was bombed, then in Louisville, Kentucky his church office was bombed. I was also jailed during the open housing movement," she recalls.
Alveda has continued her long-term work as a civil rights activist, speaking out on issues that face society today. "I believe that School Choice is a pressing civil rights issue. Perhaps the most compelling issue of all is the life of the unborn," Alveda says.
"Faith in God, and the commitment to fulfill His will for our lives -- not faith in government bureaucracy - is the key to positive action. Have faith in God!"

Conservative Government Will Raise Age of Sexual Consent
By Gudrun Schultz
OTTAWA, Ontario, February 8, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – One of the first acts of the new Conservative government will be to raise Canada’s age of sexual consent law from 14 years to 16 years. Justice Minister Vic Toews announced yesterday his intention to address the issue as soon as the House returns in April.
"One of the issues that I would like to see brought forward as quickly as possible is the age of protection, raising that from 14 to 16, and looking at, of course, bringing in a close-in-age exemption," Mr. Toews told reporters after the first caucus meeting of the new government.
Canada’s current age of consent law dates from 1892. Conservative members have worked to raise the legal consent age without success. In September 2005 a bill to raise the age of consent was defeated by 68 votes, coming from the NDP, the Bloc Quebecois and a majority of Liberals. It is expected to pass without difficulty this spring.
“If raising the age of consent is done as a stand-alone bill, it could be accomplished fairly quickly, “Mr. Toews said. "That's a priority of our government. That's an example of how I would like to proceed."
The need for change in the age of sexual consent law has taken on greater urgency with cases of adult predators luring young teens over the Internet. The new law will mean criminal charges for adults who have sex with girls or boys age 14 or 15. Under current Canadian law there is no way to prosecute adults unless they are in a position of authority or trust over the youth, in which case they can be charged with exploitation, of anyone under 18.
The law will contain a “close-in-age” exemption to avoid criminal charges against young teens who engage in consenting sexual activity with one another.
"We don't want to criminalize consenting sexual conduct between youth. We want to protect young people from adult sexual predators," said Mr. Toews.

Guatemala Supreme Court Suspends Abortion and “Family Planning” Law
By Hilary White
GUATEMALA CITY, February 8, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Supreme Court of Guatemala has ruled that a family planning law passed last week is under provisional suspension. The law was to open the door to legalised abortion in the predominantly Catholic country.
Guatemala president, Oscar Berger had previously vetoed the bill but congress voted to override the veto. The Supreme Court will examine this law and decide if it is in conjunction with existing laws regarding families and children.
United Nations population NGO’s have long complained that Guatemala enjoys legal protection for children from the point of conception. Article 9 of Guatemala’s Law of Fundamental Protection of Childhood and Adolescence states, “Children and adolescents have a fundamental right to life…Children and adolescents have a right to such protection, care, and assistance as is necessary to achieve an adequate physical, mental, social, and spiritual development. These rights are recognized from conception.”
The childhood protection law was heavily criticized by UN NGO’s for focusing too much on children’s need for protection and too little on “children’s rights,” which for the UN includes abortion.
A Guatemalan government spokesman said the administration wants to obtain a permanent injunction against the family planning law. Failing that, it would seek “other methods” to block the law.

Fired Shaw Cable Manager Stands by Giving Number of Accusing Caller to MP Vellacott
By Gudrun Schultz
SASKATOON, Saskatchewan, February 8, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) –Shaw Cable has fired program manager Jim Mattern, he says for his role in releasing the phone number of the caller who accused Conservative candidate Maurice Vellacott of sexual assault during election programming Jan.17.
LifeSiteNews broke that story, which involved allegations of defamation and slander against Liberal candidate Chris Axworthy, who lost the Saskatoon-Wanuskewin riding to Mr. Vellacott in the election. The phone number released by Mr. Mattern was traced to the Liberal campaign office. Mr. Vellacott has said he will purse legal charges.
Jim Mattern said he has no doubt that he has been fired for his role in releasing that number.
"Absolutely. There's no question about that," he told the Star Phoenix. "I guess they didn't like the way I handled it."
Mr. Mattern has said he stands by the decision to release the phone number to Vellacott.
“I was confirming a fact. I wasn’t doing anything to harm Shaw,” he said. Mattern said Tuesday he will be speaking to a lawyer about Shaw Cable’s actions.

German Male Nurse Admits to Multiple Killings
By Gudrun Schultz
BAVARIA, Germany, February 8, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A male nurse accused of killing 29 people has admitted he is guilty of causing the deaths of some patients, BBC reported today.
Stephan Letter, 27, said he had acted out of compassion, although he told the Bavarian court that his actions “cannot be justified under any circumstances…I took the rest of [the patients'] lives away without being asked, and took away what human dignity they had left." He said he killed to spare people suffering.
Mr. Letter faces 16 counts of murder, 12 counts of manslaughter, one of killing on demand, and two of attempted manslaughter. He has asked the court to convert the 16 murder charges to manslaughter, which would carry a lesser penalty.
At the time of his arrest he admitted to police that he had killed 12 people by lethal injection. He said he could not remember what happened in the other deaths.
Yesterday, Mr. Letter refused to say how many deaths he was responsible for causing, retracting his previous statements.
“I confessed to killings which I did not commit,” he told the court.
Mr. Letter was arrested in July 2004, when police conducted an investigation into a clinic where he had worked, which was missing medication.
Investigators found open vials of enough medication to kill 10 people at his home, prosecutors told the court.
Post-mortem autopsies have been performed on the exhumed bodies of 42 patients who died at the clinic during the 17 months he worked there.
Following the autopsies, Mr. Letter was charged in the deaths of 17 female and 12 male patients, ranging in age from 40 to 94. Most of the patients were more than 75 years old at the time of death.
Wilhelm Seitz, representing the families of 11 alleged victims, said Mr. Letter’s choice of patient was random.
"Not all of the patients were seriously ill, and he had no contact at all with some of them."
Germany has not legalized euthanasia, although doctors who provide suicide assistance to patients who request help are not punished, according to a Deutsche Welle news report from 2005.

Chicago Catholic University Starts “Queer Studies” Programme
DePaul Catholic University has a large lesbian/gay faculty and staff caucus
By Hilary White
CHICAGO, February 8, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – De Paul University, one of the most important Catholic colleges in the US, has instituted a minor undergraduate programme in “lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and queer (LGBTQ) studies.” The new minor programme offers students an overview of the “history of the queer movement” in legislation as well as the place of homosexuality in the US as a social movement.
The university’s dean of the Liberal Arts and Sciences did not return LifeSiteNews.com’s request for comment, but the programme was featured in a news spot earlier this week on National Public Radio. The website Queertheory.com that lists college resources for homosexual studies, notes also that “DePaul also has a large lesbian/gay faculty and staff caucus.”
NPR interviewed a professor of the programme, Gary Cestaro, who said the existence of a minor is new, but the courses themselves have been available and developing for ten years. Course offerings for the gay studies minor are not yet listed on the university’s website, but the Women’s and Gender Studies programme lists course titles for the Fall 2005 semester, that include, “Sexual Justice: Lesbians, Gays and the Law”; “Gay & Lesbian Literature” and “Identity and Anthropology of Gender”. NPR reports that the gay studies courses are popular with the class sizes being expanded due to high demand.
Cestaro is also named on Queertheory.com as the contact person for Pride DePaul, the homosexual student “support/social group” at DePaul, which is recognized and supported by the university.
Patrick Reilly, president of the Catholic organization, the Cardinal Newman Society, told LifeSiteNews.com that the institution of a minor in homosexuality is evidence of cynical political motives. “Why would a university fund a programme based on a field of study that in mainstream academia is relatively unimportant?” he asked. “Even aside from the Catholic perspective it is very clear that this is motivated from a politically correct perspective.”
“If we want to have programmes in deviant sexual behavior,” Reilly continued, “why no minor in prostitution? Other than a need to bow to political correctness, why homosexuality particularly? Why no minor in heterosexual activities?”
A foundational claim of the homosexual political movement has been that homosexuality, far from being a severe psycho-sexual disorder, is a kind of ethnicity and that the attempt to help homosexuals to leave the lifestyle and live chastely is akin to racism.
Professor Cestaro teaches the course, “Introduction to lesbian gay bisexual transgendered and queer studies.” He told NPR that the programme is important not just from an academic standpoint. “As someone who identifies as gay, I know what loneliness and isolation is.” The programme, he said, is “hugely important, really in line with the Vincentian mission of the university in the spirit of St. Vincent (de Paul) which is to allow students to appreciate themselves fully and understand their personal histories.”
One student, told NPR that the gay and lesbian courses were the reason he wanted to attend De Paul. “When I first came here I really wanted to learn about my history. Being a gay male I wanted to learn about what has happened in my past and what is the history of the queer movement,” he said.
Patrick Reilly said, “All of that suggests that aside from the question of whether the course content will directly oppose Catholic teaching, the entire enterprise is intended to affirm the legitimacy of what is called the ‘gay’ subculture or lifestyle.”
De Paul university administration said the official Catholic teaching on homosexuality would be incorporated into the programme. The chairman of the department of religious studies, Fr. James Halstead, told NPR the Catholic teaching, “as it stands today,” is that “the homosexual orientation is objectively disordered, homosexual activity is intrinsically evil, however, homosexual human beings are created by god, loved by God, and redeemed by God, have a place in the Christian community should be welcomed, valued and treasured and in civil society (have) normal human rights respected.”
Reilly responded, that many of the Catholic schools do incorporate Catholic teaching as one part of the instruction. “The question,” he said, “is whether there will be instruction in the courses that indirectly opposes Catholic teaching.”
Reilly said, “It seems clear that the programme itself would lead to affirmation of gay lifestyle and homosexual activity. This programme is entirely inappropriate for a Catholic institution.”
The Cardinal Newman Society works within Catholic academia to encourage universities to incorporate Catholic culture and orthodoxy in their programmes of study. Reilly said that the Society would be contacting Chicago’s Cardinal George and asking him to intervene.

UK Doctors Opposed to Reporting Rape of Girls Younger than 13
By Terry Vanderheyden
LONDON, February 8, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Doctors and nurses are criticizing a move by UK authorities that would compel physicians to disclose underage sex with girls 13 years of age or younger.
The proposed measure is to ensure the safety of girls, as police insist that at 13 or younger, girls who are sexually active are the victims of rape. The 2003 Sexual Offences Act established that 13-year-olds are incapable of consenting to sex. In addition to a compulsory report for girls under 13, girls 14 or 15 are also to be reported if involved sexually with a man who is significantly older.
Several medical groups, including the Royal College of Nursing, the British Medical Association, and the Royal College of GPs, worry that forcing doctors to report under-age sex would expose girls who fear revealing this information to an “explosion” in unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.
The recommendations were introduced by Sir Michael Bichard after a series of murders of girls by Ian Huntley in the Soham suburb of Cambridge. Huntley had been involved in a series of relationships with young girls before the murders.
The medical associations cited above wrote a letter to the Health Department suggesting that “The removal from adolescent sexual health services of the strong bias towards confidentiality is likely to delay the stage at which young people seek advice, or cause them to misrepresent their age and circumstances. It is probable that such a policy will deter many young people from asking for help altogether,” they added.
