Legacy Lives on as Coretta Scott King's Niece Works to End Abortion

"How can the dream survive if we murder the children?"

STATEN ISLAND, February 7, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - This week, Priests for Life (PFL), the movement of pro-life priests, commended to the Lord the soul of Coretta Scott King, with prayers for the comfort of her family, and with fond recollections of the ministry of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In a statement PFL President Fr. Frank Pavone said "Dr. King made it clear that he was not simply fighting for the Black man. He was fighting for the equality of every human life. We are honored to continue Dr. King's legacy in our day by fighting for the equality of the unborn child."

Moreover PFL revealed that the niece of Coretta and Martin King Dr. Alveda King is on the pastoral staff of the organization and "works full time for an end to abortion", declaring, "How can the dream survive if we murder the children?"

Alveda is the mother of six children and a grandmother.  She has also served on the boards and committees of numerous organizations, including the Silent No More Awareness Campaign. Currently, Alveda serving as Director of African American Outreach for Gospel of Life, headed up by Father Frank Pavone of Priests for Life.

During the years of the Civil Rights Movement, led by her Uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Alveda's family home was bombed in Birmingham, Alabama in the heat of the struggle. "Daddy's house was bombed, then in Louisville, Kentucky his church office was bombed. I was also jailed during the open housing movement," she recalls.

Alveda has continued her long-term work as a civil rights activist, speaking out on issues that face society today. "I believe that School Choice is a pressing civil rights issue. Perhaps the most compelling issue of all is the life of the unborn," Alveda says.

"Faith in God, and the commitment to fulfill His will for our lives -- not faith in government bureaucracy - is the key to positive action. Have faith in God!"
