"St. Valentines Day is a Celebration of Marriage, Not One Night Stands" Says Priest
FRONT ROYAL, Va., February 14, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, President of Human Life International (HLI), responded to the attempt by condom manufacturers to pervert St. Valentine's Day. Reacting to "national condom week" which begins today and runs till the 21st, Fr. Euteneuer said, "The condom industry is in bed with the abortion industry to exploit a day that traditionally is a celebration of selfless love and marriage. All week at campus centers across the country, organizations that make their money killing pre-born children through abortion will be passing out condoms to students."
"National Condom Week is a shameless marketing stunt promoted by the abortion industry that targets high school and college students using the same techniques that in the past were used by Big Tobacco.
"Condoms break, tear or slip off 1 time out of 12 times, ensuring abortionists who participate in National Condom Week a steady stream of business executing abortions and dispensing medications to treat STDs.
"St Valentine was a Roman Catholic priest who continued to perform marriages even after the Emperor Claudius II had outlawed marriage in a short- sighted attempt to increase the size of his army. The faithful priest was arrested and condemned to death. Before being executed, he sent a note to a young bride where his closing words were Your Valentine.
"St. Valentine's Day is a celebration of the sacrament of marriage and not one night stands in dirty dorm rooms. Let's put the 'saint' back in St. Valentine's Day and throw the condoms out!"
Illinois Newspaper Capitulates, Agrees To Run Pro-Life Ads Refused as “Too Graphic”
By Gudrun Schultz
CHICAGO, Illinois, February 14, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Illinois paper that said pro-life ads were “too graphic” to run has changed its decision, in a well-publicized victory for abortion opponents.
When Jill Stanek, a nurse and president of Right to Life of Will County, contacted the Herald News last month to purchase space for the ads, the paper rejected them. One of the ads shows a 3-D ultrasound photograph of the face of an unborn baby.
Joliet-based Herald News told CNS they reserve the right to reject any advertising for any reason. Stanek says an ad rep for the paper said the decision was made because the ads were “too graphic” and “we have to be careful,” in her blog report today.
Stanek received an email from the editor of the Herald News, Steve Vanisko, yesterday, saying that after re-examining the ads he would allow them to run in the paper.
In his email Vanisko denies that he ever stated the ads were too graphic, and says “If that was stated by a representative of this newspaper, it was done so in error.” (To view editor Steve Vanisko’s email: http://www.jillstanek.com/)
Stanek, however, stands by her original account, stating, “…his subordinate did relay to us that he/the advertising department originally rejected our ads because they considered them ‘too graphic.’ Our ‘local contact’ with the newspaper wrote down what the ad rep said verbatim.”
The Herald’s decision to back down on the issue demonstrates a growing influence of pro-life activism on the mainstream media. Vanisko emailed ABC News yesterday to let them know of the Herald’s decision. Supporters of Stanek who contacted the Herald in protest of the censorship reported that they also received copies of Vanisko’s email.

Gay Activists Ask Canada to Lower Age of Consent for Anal Sex, National Post Agrees
By John-Henry Westen
TORONTO, February 14, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Homosexual activists have long sought to distance themselves from pedophiles, however Canada's most prominent homosexual activist group has now demanded the lowering the age of consent for anal sex to 16 from 18. Surprisingly, Canada's National Post, regarded by some as a 'conservative' paper has come out in favour of the proposal.
Reacting to the Conservative Government's plan to raise the age of consent for normal sex from 14 to 16, EGALE (Equality for Gays and Lesbians Everywhere) has commenced a campaign to have the age of consent for anal sex lowered to 16 from 18. Laurie Arron, the director of advocacy for EGALE remarked to the Ottawa Citizen, "There's no reason to treat anal sex differently than other sexual acts except to stigmatize gay and bisexual men."
However, that statement is categorically false, speaking strictly from a medical standpoint. Even those who support homosexual sex acts warn nonetheless that anal sex is a dangerous activity, regardless of genders involved. The sex info site of the University of California at Santa Barbara, which can in no way be described as opposed to homosexual activity, nonetheless points out that anal sex is a dangerous practice.
Experts on sexual behaviour, or "sexperts" at the site refers to them, warn that anal sex is the most dangerous behaviour for transmission of HIV/AIDS and all other STDs since the anus is not designed for sexual activity as is the vagina. Moreover, the 'sexperts' warn that the practice also leads to fecal incontinence - loss of normal control of the sphincter muscles which leads to stool leaking from the rectum at unexpected times.
As the website puts it: "Even when people use lots of lubrication during anal sex, there can be tearing of the tissue inside the anus . . . For this reason, anal sex is the riskiest form of sexual activity when it comes to the transmission of HIV/AIDS.
"Tiny tears in the anal tissue are like giant superhighways for the HIV viruses, allowing them to get inside the body and enter the blood system. Anal tears provide an opening for all the other STDs as well.
"It may be possible for repetitive anal sex to lead to weakening of the anal sphincter, which is the muscle that tightens after we defecate. Once weakened, feces can escape the anus against our will."
(see the website http://www.soc.ucsb.edu/sexinfo/?article=faq&refid=125 WARNING: graphic sketches used to illustrate)
Nevertheless, the National Post backed the EGALE request in an unsigned editorial Saturday February 11. The editorial titled, "Equalize the age of consent" said "Section 159 of the Criminal Code specifically bans anal intercourse between unmarried people under 18. This is plainly discriminatory, a prohibition intended to stigmatize homosexual or bisexual teenagers, suggesting that the nature of their sexual relationship requires special added protection. This is nonsense." (see the editorial - paid subscription required - http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/news/editorialsletters/story.html?id=a2d82b6e... )
In response to the editorial, Jessica White West Vancouver, B.C. wrote a letter to the editor of the National Post. The published letter stated, "If both vaginal and anal intercourse were in accordance with natural law and did not discriminate in terms of consequences, this would be true. However, this is not the case with homosexual sex, as two people of the same sex do not have the required body parts to interact sexually and their intercourse can never be fruitful."
White continued, "Furthermore, their sexual practices result in both physical and emotional damage, as is evidenced in numerous studies. More than 80% of AIDS cases in Canada are among homosexual or bisexual males; other diseases suffered either exclusively, or in larger percentages by the homosexual population, include: anal cancer, chlamydia trachomatis, cryptosporidium, giardia lamblia, herpes simplex virus, HPV, gonorrhea, viral hepatitis B and C, and syphilis."
Canadian Bishops Conference Praises New Prime Minister on "Respect to Life and Human Dignity"
By John-Henry Westen
OTTAWA, February 14, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In a letter dated February 6, 2006, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) congratulated Stephen Harper on his becoming Prime Minister of Canada. Signed by Sherbrooke Archbishop and CCCB President André Gaumond, the letter states, "We are pleased with the attention you have given to date to matters dealing with respect to life and human dignity." (see the full letter here: http://www.cccb.ca/PublicStatements.htm?CD=547&ID=1822 )
In an interview with LifeSiteNews.com today, Archbishop Gaumond explained that he was referring to Harper's statements on life and family issues. "We are saying that during the campaign and before the campaign (Harper) addressed those topics with more of an open mind in our point of view." When asked, if the Archbishop meant 'more open mind' than his Prime Ministerial predecessors, the Archbishop replied in the affirmative, adding also that Harper was more open than "other politicians at the time" of the campaign.
The statement from the Catholic leadership is especially interesting since Harper is an evangelical Protestant while his immediate predecessors Paul Martin and Jean Chretien were at least nominally Catholic.
During the campaign Harper himself promised that he would not allow his government to put forward or support pro-life legislation, he maintained however that such issues could be proposed as private members legislation and be given a free vote. Nearing the end of the campaign he went further to appease abortion supporters saying he would "use whatever influence I have in Parliament to be sure that such a matter doesn't come to a vote.
Despite this however, Harper was far more "open" to life issues since former Prime Minister Martin made keeping abortion legal a major part of his campaign. Martin, while claiming to be Catholic, went to great lengths during the campaign to champion abortion and homosexual 'marriage'. As Luc Gagnon, President of the major political pro-life group in the province of Quebec - Campagne Quebec Vie - told LifeSiteNews.com ,"On abortion, Harper at least did not use the same rhetoric as Martin who said it was a charter right and Mr. Harper was more moderate."
Gagnon said that the archbishop in praising Harper's stand on the right to life was likely referring primarily to Harper's stand against assisted suicide, which came out clearly in the campaign during the French-language debate. During that January 10th debate Harper said his party would not propose changing the law on the matter, adding, "I think it's important to resist the idea of giving the power to kill."
Archbishop Gaumond also told LifeSiteNews.com that Harper's stand in favour of the traditional definition of marriage was worthy of praise since the matter "is for us so important a topic."
Study Suggests Gay “Marriages” Healthy, Ignores Opposing Research
By Gudrun Schultz
LONDON, United Kingdom, February 14, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A new report suggesting civil partnerships may hold potential health benefits for gay couples ignores significant research showing serious health problems associated with the gay lifestyle.
The report, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health (JECH) by London researchers Professor Michael King and Annie Bartlett, suggests that gay couples will experience the same health improvements that have been linked to those in heterosexual marriages. Stress reduction through stable relationships and emotional security has been linked to reduced incidences of cardiovascular and other diseases in married couples.
Primarily, though, the report’s authors anticipate stress reduction through greater social acceptance of homosexual partnerships, which they expect will follow the recent legalization of gay “civil unions” in the United Kingdom.
The study ignores extensive research that clearly shows severe health risks associated with homosexual relationships and activity, both psychological and physical.
A recent study revealed there is a 20-year reduction in the average life span of a homosexual male, compared to that of a heterosexual. Published in Psychological Reports in 2005, the study “Gay obituaries closely track officially reported deaths from AIDS” shows that the dangers of homosexual activity reduce the life span of gay men to the life expectancy of men in1871.
While the JECH report recognizes the existence of emotional and behavioral problems associated with the homosexual lifestyle, such as depression, poor self-image, promiscuity and suicide attempts, the authors suggest social discrimination is the primary cause of these behaviors. However, other studies contradict that unproven assumption frequently stated by homosexual advocacy groups.
Dr. Richard Fitzgibbons reports that an extensive study in the Netherlands, where homosexuality has long been accepted and protected under law, indicates that "psychiatric disease cannot be attributed to social rejection and homophobia". The high rate of psychiatric disorders associated with homosexual behaviour in the Netherlands contradicts the gay activist assumption about the cause of these disorders among homosexuals.

UK Fertility Authority Proposes Allowing Egg Donation as Embryonic Stem Cell Source
By Terry Vanderheyden
LONDON, February 14, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A UK fertility authority is pondering a proposed measure that would allow women to donate eggs to be used to grow human embryos for embryonic stem cell research purposes.
The Human Fertility and Embryology Authority will decide Wednesday whether to allow so-called “altruistic” egg donations. It already allows women the option to donate “spare” embryos that result from in-vitro fertilization. The new measure would allow women to undergo drug-induced production of multiple eggs, followed by surgical extraction, outside of IVF treatment.
The use of medications to stimulate egg production can result in dangerous side effects, including ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, which can cause kidney damage or death. The hormones used can also lead to fertility problems.
Pro-life charity Life spokesman Michaela O'Sullivan, told the BBC, “It is disgraceful that the HFEA is to entice women to undergo invasive and risky operations in order to facilitate experimental research that offers no immediate hope of cures.”
To date, there is virtually no evidence that embryonic stem cells have any efficacy for the treatment of disease. Adult stem cells meanwhile have been used for breakthroughs in the treatment of a wide and growing range of diseases.
Stem cell scientist, Dr. Peter Hollands, told LifeSiteNews.com he disagrees with those who contend there is a great need to continue study of embryonic stem cells. “We should focus our attention on the most readily available and usable type of cells and these are adult and umbilical cord stem cells,” he argued. “Embryonic stem cells at present are largely political rhetoric and scientific hype. Adult and umbilical cord blood stem cells are proven and ready to use. The public needs to know this.”

Porn Industry Balks at Law Mandating Minimum Age for “Performers”
By Terry Vanderheyden
WASHINGTON, February 14, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The US Department of Justice is in court to defend its mandate that internet pornography sites maintain records ensuring their “performers” comply with minimum age laws in the country. In order to fight the exploitation of children, women who appear in x-rated pictures or videos must be at least 18 years old in the US.
The Justice Department justified the reporting when they announced the new rules, saying that minors are “often forced to engage in sexually explicit conduct.” Web site operators are opposed to the measure, since many purveyors argue that they are simply re-sellers of material produced by other companies, and that the requirements impose an undue burden on them. The rules are retroactive to 1995; first-time violators face prison sentences of up to five years.
The regulations are a Congress-mandated update of the 1988 criminal code law mandating minimum age requirements for sexually-explicit materials. A pornography advocacy group, the Free Speech Coalition, has filed a lawsuit claiming the requirements violate the First Amendment.
Denver District Court Judge Walker D. Miller issued an injunction in December blocking the Justice Department from implementing the policy against producers who re-issue materials produced by other companies, but allowed the policy to proceed for primary pornography producers.
The Coalition has appealed the decision, set to be heard by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit.
The 1988 law mandated that all producers of photographs and video maintain records ensuring that women meet the minimum age requirement. The new policy applies the law to digital and computer-generated images and video – a subsection of the pornography market that has grown “exponentially,” according to a Wall Street Journal report.
Judge Miller also threw out a Justice Department requirement that internet chat site operators store a log of all chats.

UK Home Office Accused of Anti-Christian Bias
By Gudrun Schultz
LONDON, United Kingdom, February 14, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Government ministers in the United Kingdom have been accused of displaying anti-Christian bias and fostering social polarization, after it was revealed the Home Office invests significantly more time and money into celebrating Muslim and Hindu feasts than Christian celebrations.
More than ₤15,000 were spent in one week of events celebrating the religious feasts of the Muslim and Hindu communities. The only notice Christmas celebrations received, on the other hand, was announcement of a carol service, and the Home Office has no plans to participate in celebrations of the primary Christian celebration of Easter.
Conservative MP David Davies, who raised questions of “anti-Christian prejudice,” noted the discrepancies.
The Times reported that the Department for Transport (DfT) sent staff to minority religious events but did not officially participate in Christmas celebrations. Muslim and Chinese religious events were marked by VIP receptions held by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, but no observation of Easter is planned.
In November, 200 guests from the Muslim, Hindu and Sikh communities were invited to an Eid/ Diwali celebration (combining the feast marking the end of Muslim Ramadan and the Hindu and Sikh festival of lights), which cost ₤8,933. A celebration for internal staff marking the same religious feast six days earlier cost ₤7,557. The DfT spent ₤300 for staff to mark the same event. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) sent their “diversity team” to a Chinese new year celebration, and the Highways Agency sent staff to a Diwali event.
Government officials said participation in minority religious ceremonies is an attempt by ministers to fulfill legal obligations towards reaching minority communities, but critics said the discrepancies in expenditure and participation only fuel the social divisions already a problem in British society.
Same-Sex “Marriage” Proponents Demonstrate Outside Mass Celebrating Marriage
By Terry Vanderheyden
ST. PAUL, Minnesota, February 14, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – About 150 protesters demonstrated outside the Cathedral of St. Paul while Roman Catholic Archbishop Harry Flynn held a Mass in honour of marriage Sunday. The group gathered to protest the church’s support for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex “marriage.”
“Today we come together to celebrate … the vocation of marriage between one man and woman,” the archbishop said during Mass, as reported by the Pioneer Press. “Today that vocation is under challenge, even under attack.”
The protesters attended the Mass because of support from the state’s Roman Catholic bishops for a constitutional amendment, which, pending state approval would appear on a ballot in the November elections. The Mass has been a tradition for the past 25 years.
When Archbishop Flynn asked married couples to stand for recognition, several same-sex couple activists also stood, as the archbishop led the throng in a renewal of their marriage vows.
In a statement, the archdiocese re-stated the official Church position on marriage: “The time-honored and Judeo-Christian definition of marriage as a lifelong union between one man and one woman is under assault from many sides. It is because of Catholic unswerving belief in this definition of marriage that we join with other faiths in giving our wholehearted support to the proposed Minnesota Marriage Amendment,” they added.
The archdiocese has sponsored a postcard program that encourages parishioners to petition their lawmakers to vote in favor of the proposed marriage amendment.
