Openly Homosexual Ontario Health Minister Seeking to Become a “Dad”
By Gudrun Schultz
TORONTO, Ontario, January 5, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Ontario Health Minister George Smitherman, a homosexual activist, wants to become a “dad”, according to a recent interview with the Toronto Star.
“I’m processing most issues now as someone who has a very strong desire yet to be a dad,” Liberal MPP Smitherman said. He is exploring parenting options with his gay partner. His efforts to become a father have not been well publicized so far.
Smitherman, who calls himself “Ontario’s first openly homosexual MPP,” was elected to the riding of Toronto Centre-Rosedale in 1999. Premier Dalton McGuinty appointed him as Health Minister in 2003. His involvement in homosexual issues has been a prominent element in his political career.
In 2002 Smitherman acted as litigation guardian to homosexual student Marc Hall, then 17, who won the right in court to take his gay date to the school prom at Msgr. John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School in Oshawa, and who later sued the Durham Catholic District School Board for denying him permission (the case has since been dropped). The Board refused to allow the student to bring his date to the prom on the grounds that homosexuality was against the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church.
In 1999, Smitherman, together with Toronto City Councilor Kyle Rae, also a homosexual activist, admitted to the Toronto Sun that he had sex with HIV-infected men but said it was of no consequence since they wore condoms (Toronto Sun, October ’99). Smitherman had objected to a request from a Toronto public-health department for the John’s list from an escort agency whose prostitutes were found to be HIV positive.
