"I would do it again" says Canadian Prof Fined For Voicing Opposition to Homosexuality
By Gudrun Schultz
CAPE BRETON, Nova Scotia, July 27, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Canadian professor David Mullan has been fined $2,100 by Cape Breton University, after he told a student homosexuality was unnatural.
Homosexual student Shane Wallis, who coordinates the campus’ Sexual Diversity Office, filed two human rights complaints against him for harassment, saying he was offended by Professor Mullan’s comments.
“The harassment charge is ridiculous. [Wallis] picked a fight,” Prof. Mullan said in an interview with LifeSiteNews.com today.
Wallis lodged one complaint after reading two letters Mullan posted on his website, criticizing the Anglican Church of Canada for accepting homosexual “marriage.” Mullan had written the letters to his former Anglican bishop over two years ago. In his initial complaint Wallis said the letters’ content offended him.
Following the first complaint, Mullan responded to an email sent by Wallis, telling the student, “homosexuality is a repudiation of nature and the apotheosis of unbridled desire.” Wallis filed a second complaint, and the university decided to issue the fine against Mullan.
Mullan said the university’s discrimination and harassment policy is too broad and open to abuse by people who don’t want to hear opposing arguments.
“It is preposterous. They are trying to set a precedent, an enormously dangerous precedent. My particular views are irrelevant here—they are wielding a two-edged sword, and if this can happen to me it can happen to anyone.”
Mullan said the university’s actions reflect a growing intolerance in Canadian society toward any opinion that challenges what he calls the “homosex ideology”, citing recent rulings by Canadian Human Rights Tribunals against critics of the homosexual lifestyle.
“If you infringe on the homosex ideology, you can expect trouble. Canadian Human Rights Tribunals seem to exist to be enforcers for homosex ideology, and that ideology is very powerful.”
Speaking out against an ideology that he believes is fundamentally negative has become necessary, he said, because the promotion of homosexuality is becoming more deeply ingrained in society, particularly within the schools.
“People accuse me of hatred—I don’t hate anyone for engaging in homosex. I think they are making a dreadful mistake, but this is a free society. But when these things are promoted, particularly in front of elementary students, they need to be combated.”
“I have no issue with deep emotional relationships—men to men and women to women. Of course not. But when sexual activity is introduced—that is fraught with danger, psychological, physical and, some would also think, moral.”
Both Mullan and CBU’s Faculty Association have filed grievances on his behalf. Mullan wants to see the fine against him annulled and the university’s human rights’ code revised to protect freedom of speech rights.
“I will not accept any penalty because I’ve not done anything wrong. In fact, I’ve done something right—I’ve invited a young man to question an idea he’s held for I don’t know how long,” Mullan said. “Isn’t that what university is for? I would do it again.”
Cape Breton University officials did not return calls by press time.
