Alabama Becomes 20th State to Approve Constitutional Amendment Protecting Marriage
CWA applauds Large Margin of Victory
WASHINGTON, June 7, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Alabama passed a constitutional marriage amendment, defining marriage as only the union of a man and a woman, this past Tuesday, June 6, by an overwhelming majority.
Incomplete returns showed a statewide approval averaging 80 percent, and this included rural and urban precincts.
Alabama thus becomes the 20th state to amend its constitution to protect marriage. Six more states - Idaho, South Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin - will vote in November.
Concerned Women for America (CWA) has applauded Alabama's overwhelming approval of their state constitutional marriage.
"We're not surprised that the people of Alabama would give a resounding 'Yes!" to the marriage amendment," said Valerie Askew-Williams, state director of CWA of Alabama. "Our volunteers worked hard to make this happen, and we hope it sends a clear message to Washington that citizens are serious about protecting the integrity of this God-created institution."
Robert Knight, director of CWA's Culture & Family Institute, said, "This is a rebuke to all those liberals on the U.S. Senate floor during the Marriage Protection Amendment debate who have been telling us that Americans don't care about the marriage issue.
"The people of Alabama, like other Americans, deserve to see their decision protected from radical judges who have overturned marriage laws in several states. That's why CWA is urging Congress to continue the process of sending a federal constitutional marriage amendment to the states for their approval.
"We also would ask legislators at the state and federal levels to take a harder look at doing their constitutional duty to remove judges who violate their vows and create laws instead of interpreting them."
Concerned Women for America is the nation's largest public policy women's organization.
