DONGSHIGU, March 14, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Chinese human rights activist, Chen Guangcheng, has been arrested with his brother and cousin according to Chen’s wife, Yuan Weijing. Yuan said they have not heard from them since Saturday night when they were taken from their home in a police van. They had been going to police to file a report about the beating of Chen’s cousin.

Chen has been under house arrest since August in his home in Dongshigu, a farming village in Shandong province. Yuan said that local police denied knowing anything about the arrest or the beatings.

Chen is well known in China and abroad for his work defending people with disabilities and campaign against China’s brutal One Child policy and aggressive birth control program.

The arrest comes at the same time as the annual meeting of China’s ceremonial parliament, a time when authorities are sensitive to public criticism and often detain activists.
