SYDNEY, Australia, May 1, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney, said the church would speak out against proposals to lift an adoption ban for same-sex couples, under review by the government of New South Wales.

Cardinal Pell told the Sydney Morning Herald that children have the right to a “mother and father.”

He said the church would present the review with sociological findings that show children are better served by being raised with a mother and a father. The findings were reached by comparing children raised in married-parent families, unmarried heterosexual unions and same-sex partnerships. Cardinal Pell said there was “significant evidence about the benefits of marriage” for children over same-sex partnerships.

Under current NSW law, individuals who identify themselves as homosexual can adopt children, but a homosexual couple cannot. NSW adoption laws were re-evaluated six years ago, at which time the government decided against extending adoption rights to gay couples. The Adoption Act 2000 called for a six-year review of the decisions’ impact on children and families.

Similar bans on homosexual adoption have been overturned in the territories of Western Australia, Tasmania and the ACT over the past five years.

Cardinal Pell led the Australian bishops in supporting the Vatican’s strong statement on homosexual unions in 2004, saying:

“One does not need to have any particular religion to recognize…that the family based on marriage is the best way to bring up happy, productive children. These are arguments from reason, supported by both the Christian and Jewish traditions going back at least 3000 years. It is the strange proposal to legalize homosexual unions which is the novelty.”
