Australia on Gay 'Marriage': Day Care Tots Taught About it; Med School Hopefuls Must Approve
By Hilary White
SYDNEY, May 29, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A government-funded preschool in Sydney, Australia that cares for children ranging in age from six weeks to six years, is coming under criticism for introducing a curriculum in which children are introduced to the notions of "transsexualism" and "gay marriage." The Marrickville Council, the municipal body responsible for the centre, says the staff of their child care facilities "work as collaborators with children" and supports "all aspects of human diversity within our community."
Marrickville Mayor Sam Byrne boasted that the centre had "successfully adopted several strategies to encompass lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and inter-sex issues". He admitted to The Saturday Daily Telegraph that the purpose of the curriculum was to alter the children's "perception of what is 'normal' gender and sexual identity".
"At Marrickville," Byrne said, "we believe in offering children and families an inclusive program based on social justice."
Books used in the children's program include the controversial Learn to Include books that feature homosexual partners as "dads." The Telegraph revealed that the books come from a non-profit program run by the Gay and Lesbian Counselling Service of NSW and are funded by the Attorney-Generals Department.
Today the Daily Telegraph reports that parents had not been informed of the gay and transgender curriculum. Federal Education Minister Julie Bishop said children should not be introduced to "perverse" teachings in school. The Daily Telegraph quotes Bishop saying, "I wouldn't want to see any perverse biases put into early childhood development that could affect children one way or the other."
Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott called the curriculum "wacky." "Kids of that age just want to get on with being kids and why should we inflict all our adult hang-ups and angst on kids. Let children be children," he said.
In related news, the president of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists, Dr Greg Deacon, has complained about the practice of some Australian medical schools asking candidates about their views on "gay marriage." Deacon says it is a discriminatory attempt to socially engineer medical schools to agree with a certain ideological standpoint. "We want to get clearly the most objective and the fairest system we can in selecting medical students," he told ABC News online.
The effort to create acceptance in children of the homosexual aberration through school "diversity" training programs has been a mainstay of the homosexual political movement. But the acceptance has a backlash in human costs. In April, Canadian Dawn Stefanowicz testified in Massachusetts of the deep psychological damage done by her upbringing in the homosexual subculture. "Where can the children find safety if legislation is in place legitimizing homosexual marriage?" Stefanowicz told Massachusetts lawmakers.
In March, Australian Prime Minister John Howard vowed to keep the traditional definition of marriage in Australia. "There is a special place in Australian society for the institution of marriage, as historically understood, and we do not intend to allow that to be in any way undermined," he said.
