UNICEF to End Hallowe'en Box Collection in Canada
By Hilary White
MONTREAL, May 30, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The CBC reports today that UNICEF has announced that it will no longer be collecting funds with the familiar orange boxes at Hallowe'en as of this year. For fifty years, the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund has been collecting the coins in Canada to fund its work in developing countries.
But the organization has come under increasing criticism for moving away from its original purpose - to provide material aid to children in emergencies - and moving into the UN's population control agenda, promoting abortion, contraceptives and sex education under the auspices of "family planning" and "reproductive rights."
Evelyne Guindon, executive director for UNICEF Quebec announced that the coin collection was too labour intensive to make it worth continuing.
Pro-life Canadians have led an effort to bring UNICEF back to its original purpose by a boycott of the Hallowe'en boxes. In 1997, the Catholic School board of Toronto discontinued its support for UNICEF and Campaign Life Coalition convinced a number of Toronto's Catholic schools to introduce a similar box to collect funds for a local women's crisis pregnancy centre, Aid to Women.
In 1996, the Vatican announced that it would cancel its token $2000 annual donation to the organization because of UNICEF's support for the anti-life and anti-family movement.
In a pamphlet published by the Life Ethics Centre, Canadian pro-life advocate, Winifride Prestwich wrote that the organization began moving away from its original mandate in the early 1970's and joined with the work of the UN Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) and the World Health Organization in providing IUD's and sterilization for girls and women in the developing world.
UNFPA records show that UNICEF has participated in "Family planning units" in China where the UN's own human rights groups have complained of the communist government's coercive abortion and sterilization program.
