Poland may End Rape/Incest Abortion Exception
By Hilary White
WARSAW, October 25, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A leading party in the Polish ruling coalition has proposed to close the “rape exception” loophole for abortion in that country and is seeking an insertion into the constitution that would guarantee “the legal right to life from the moment of conception,” Radio Polonia reports.
The League of Polish Families (LPR), a part of Poland’s coalition government, said that Poland’s restrictions on abortion are not sufficient as long a child can be killed for having been conceived by rape or incest.
While Poland’s protections for unborn children are among the strongest in Europe, they are still not complete with abortion legal in cases of conception from rape or incest or if the child is disabled.
Maciej Giertych, an MEP from the League of Polish Families said, “There is no need to penalize the conceived children for the sins of the parents. There is also an exception which says that if the child is disabled, it should be killed. We want to protect the disabled from conception and not only from birth.”
Wojciech Wierzejski, Vice-president of LPR and former Member of the European Parliament, said, “Abortion on medical grounds cannot be used as a precedent to kill a human being.”
The League of Polish Families is considered far-right in most of Europe’s liberal media, but bases its teaching on interpretations of Catholic social doctrine, supporting public education and health care and the withdrawal of Poland’s troops from Iraq. The LPR opposes the legalization of "soft drugs", abortion, euthanasia, and gay “marriage”. The LPR also supports the publication of the complete archives of the Polish communist secret police, a hot-button issue in post-Communist Poland.
