Bishop: Tomorrow is Last Chance for AI on Abortion or Catholics Will Boycott
By Elizabeth O'Brien
UNITED KINGDOM, August 10, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A British Bishop has given Amnesty International (AI) a final warning, saying that tomorrow the organization faces its last chance reject its pro-abortion stance, or else face a boycott from individual Catholics and the Catholic Church.
East Anglia Bishop Michael Evens, a long-time member of AI, clearly stated that tomorrow's meeting of the Amnesty International Council in Mexico City is the last opportunity for AI to revoke its position on abortion, the Guardian Unlimited reports.
Evans stated, "Catholics and others on the council opposed to this change of policy must take this last opportunity to take action."
"Mexico will be the final crunch moment."
These words follow a whole host of pleas, warnings and exhortations from Church leaders, lay organizations and Catholic faithful throughout the world.
The clinching denunciation of AI's new policy arrived in July when Vatican official Cardinal Renato Martino, head of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, condemned the new policy and warned that all Catholics would be forced to withdraw their support. He stated, "If, in fact, Amnesty International persists in this course of action, individuals and Catholic organizations must withdraw their support because, in deciding to promote abortion rights, AI has betrayed its mission."
Commenting on tomorrow's meeting of the International Council, President of Campaign Life Coalition's Jim Hughes told LifeSiteNews.com, "If Amnesty International remains on its present course and does not turn back tomorrow it will becomes just another organization like the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL). Amnesty International will go from being an organization that is genuinely concerned about human beings and saving human lives to becoming an organization that advocates the killing of human beings."
"Perhaps from the ashes of the ruin of this organization, there will come a new initiative from people who are genuinely concerned, and we look forward to promoting any such organization when it comes along."
