Action Call as German Homeschooled 15-year-old Sentenced to Child Psychiatry Unit

15 German police officers enforce law still on books from Hitler era and remove youth from parents' home

Busekros familyNUREMBERG, February 5, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Canadian and American homeschool associations are calling their memberships to take action on the case of a homeschooled teenager in Germany who has been taken away from her family and placed in a child psychiatry unit.

Last Thursday, a 15-year-old homeschooled girl, Melissa Busekros, was forcibly removed from her parent's custody by over 15 police officers. The homeschooled girl has been placed in the child psychiatry unit of the Nuremberg clinic.

Home school legal defense explains the situation stressing that this is a case of Germany attempting to keep down a surge in the popularity of homeschooling which remains illegal in Germany.  "Homeschooling was first banned under Adolf Hitler, and that ban is still enforced today," says the association.

"In the summer of 2005, when Melissa was 15, she was told she would have to repeat the seventh grade at the government school because she was failing math and Latin. She had good grades in the rest of her classes, so her parents tutored her at home for those two subjects. When the school officials found out they were angry and then expelled Melissa, so the family began to homeschool full time," explains HSLDA.

"However, the Youth Welfare office then took the family to court because they were homeschooling. Then, on Tuesday, January 30, 2007, social workers and police officers came to the Busekros home and forcibly took Melissa to the child psychiatric unit where she was questioned for four hours before she was returned home. Then two days later, 15 police officers and social workers came to the Busekros home and took Melissa away from her parents by force and placed her in the child psychiatric unit.

"According to Melissa's father, Hubert Busekros, this treatment was justified by the psychiatrist's finding two days previously that Melissa was supposedly developmentally delayed by one year and that she suffered from school phobia.

A German education group which supports the right of parents to homeschool their children, The Netzwerk Bildungsfreiheit [the Network for Freedom of Education], has condemned the police/state action.

HSLDA in Canada and the US is asking its membership to pray for the family and to call or email the German Embassy and give them this message:

"We are shocked to hear of the Busekros' homeschooled daughter Melissa being removed from the custody of her parents and being placed in a child psychiatric unit. This is an outrage that hearkens back to the Nazi era. We cannot believe a free nation would put a homeschooled child in a psychiatric ward for 'school phobia.' The attack on the homeschool families throughout Germany must stop."

Parents Claim Victory as California Bill to Ban Spanking is Shelved

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

SACRAMENTO, February 5, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Parents, grandparents and concerned citizens have apparently repelled the proposal to ban spanking of young children in California. Assemblywoman Sally Lieber of San Jose, a Democrat and the second-in-command of the California State Assembly, declined to introduce her spanking ban Thursday, as was expected.

News of Lieber's proposal which generated nationwide media coverage resulted in Californians and people throughout the country flooding the State Capitol with opposition phone calls and emails.

"This home-invasion bill has been stopped cold by parents and grandparents who know that to love children is to discipline them and show them the way to live," said Randy Thomasson, president of Campaign for Children and Families (CCF), a leading nonprofit, nonpartisan California-based pro-family organization, which has been strongly opposing the spanking ban. "Because so many people have spoken out, the Democrats in Sacramento realize that their liberal agenda is offending a whole lot of people."

Lieber pushed to make parental spanking of children under age 4 a misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both.

In the face of a constant stream of phone calls and emails to her and other state legislators, Lieber declined to introduce her bill during the Jan. 29 and Feb. 1 floor sessions.

"Sally Lieber mistakenly believes that parents who infrequently spank their children should be arrested, and she wrongly guesses that children who were spanked will respond by committing crimes," said Thomasson. "But the obvious truth is that most children who were appropriately spanked become law-abiding citizens, not criminals. Any elected official who supports a ban on spanking is attacking dads and moms and usurping their God-given responsibility to raise their own children."

Texas Gov. Issues Executive Order Approving Mandatory HPV Vaccines for Girls 9-11

Governor Rick Perry bypasses State Legislature to unilateraly impose controversial order

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

By Gudrun Schultz

AUSTEN, Texas, February 5, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Girls as young as nine years old will be required to undergo vaccination for the sexually-transmitted Human Papilloma Virus, after Texas Governor Rick Perry issued an executive order last Friday mandating immunization for school girls.

Perry bypassed the State Legislature to issue the order, directing the Health and Human Services Commission to adopt rules for the administration of the vaccine.

Multiple states are considering legislation to enforce HPV vaccination, after a nation-wide campaign promoted the “necessity” of protecting girls from the cancer-causing virus--HPV is linked to the majority of cases of cervical cancer.

The campaign received significant funding from the drug conglomerate Merck and Co. that produces the vaccine known as Gardasil, revealed by a report from the Life Issues Institute last week.

The company has funneled money through the advocacy organization Women in Government, made up of female legislative representatives. Most of the state bills to mandate HPV vaccination were introduced by members of the organization. As well, an official with Merck’s Vaccine Division is a Board member of Women in Government, according to the Associated Press.

The AP also reported last week that Merck contributed $6,000 to Gov. Perry’s re-election campaign. As well, one of the drug company’s three lobbyists in Texas is Mike Toomey, who was Perry’s former chief of staff. His current chief of staff is married to the daughter of Texas Rep. Dianne White Delisi, state director for Women in Government.

Merck has refused to say how much money is being spent on the lobbying efforts, but reports say their budget in Texas alone has doubled to between $150,000 to $250,000.

Opponents of the vaccine say parental rights to make medical decisions for their children would be overrun by state-enforced vaccination for a highly-preventable disease that is linked to sexual promiscuity.

“Even though most states propose opt-out provisions for parents who have moral objections, the requirement intrudes on families’ privacy and it begins to chip away at parents’ authority to make moral and medical decisions for their children,” said Bradley Mattes, executive director of the Life Issues Institute. “Further, it sends a conflicting message to children whose parents advocate abstinence until marriage.

Mandating immunization sends the message to young girls that they are expected to engage in sexual activity, Mattes said.

“It appears nearly everyone discussing the issue seems to have abdicated the concept of abstinence until marriage - the best and most simple answer.”

As well, Mattes said the vaccine would undo years of effort to reduce the pregnancy and abortion rate of teenage girls by providing a “false sense of security among many girls, resulting in more teenage sex, other STDs, pregnancy and abortion.”

Other organizations opposing state-controlled use of the vaccine include the Catholic Medical Association, the American College of Pediatricians (ACP), Focus on the Family, the National Catholic Bioethics Center and the Pro Family Law Center, according to a report by the pro-life advocacy group Children of God for Life.

Husband and Wife Team Using Hollywood Skills to Produce Pro-Life Theme Films

LifeSiteNews interviews Jonathon & Deborah Flora of film, "A Distant Thunder"

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

By Steve Jalsevac

Deborah And Jonathon FloraWASHINGTON, February 5, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The production of a growing number of movies with a solid moral and/or religious foundation is seen by pro-life leaders as an exciting current development. At the recent Washington March for Life, Jonathon & Deborah Flora, the husband and wife team behind the powerful pro-life themed film, A Distant Thunder, were interviewed by LifeSiteNews. Also present at this year’s March for Life events were one of the producers and the male star of the pro-life themed movie, Bella.

The Flora’s quality, Hollywood produced 35 minute film, which was launched at last year’s March for Life, has had such a strong impact - even influencing state legislation - they are now preparing to produce a feature length movie reflecting on the theme of life and its value. Jonathan Flora, a skilled producer for Disney, wrote the screenplay and directed A Distant Thunder. Deborah, a professional actress and television program producer, played the leading role in the intense drama production which addresses the disturbing issue of partial birth abortion.

THE INTERVIEW – PART I:

LifeSiteNews: Tell us what led you to create A Distant Thunder?

Jonathon: Our first few years of being married, the doctors were telling us that we couldn’t have our own children. Right away I started kind of feeling this guilty conviction because I had made an abortion decision many years ago.  I was just on line doing research and being kind of blown away by the staggering number of abortions that were being done and that was when I stumbled across partial-birth abortion – this was before President Bush had signed the ban.

I had never really understood the phrase, let alone the actual practice, and the more research I did the more horrified I was. I talked to several people, including Deborah, and also they had either heard it bantered around or they had never heard it at all and nobody really knew what it was.

I just really felt a strong conviction on my heart to try to bring this out to the public but not to do it in a documentary driven way but to do it in a compelling story with interesting characters and almost make partial-birth abortion the sub-plot. Hopefully, therefore, people would be entertained by this movie and oh, by the way, they would be educated as to what this procedure is.  So that is what we did and it has really taken off.

Last year was our first real launch into doing it, right here at the March for Life. But since then it has been involved even in South Dakota. It was mentioned in the Senate debates from the Floor and we were told later it helped garner critical votes in favor of passing the abortion bill.

Each one of the Supreme Court Justices received a copy before they heard a partial-birth ban argument.  We hear stories about how it has helped sway abortion decisions so now there are children alive because of it and a nice letter from President Bush thanking us.  But the accolades aren’t what it’s about – it’s really the idea that it is helping to make a difference in changing hearts and minds and by doing it in the way that has been one of the biggest influences on our culture, which is through the media.

LifeSiteNews: What has your role been in it?

Deborah:  Well, I am the actress in it and the good thing is I have a wonderful director.  I am a professional actress but it means so much when you can act and use your skills for something that you believe in.  And, what we found, too, is that abortion is the one issue, that no matter what side you are on, you can’t talk about.  Nobody wants to discuss it –you mention the word - a barrier goes up.

So, we felt like God had given us an ability as film-makers to provide a tool for people to discuss something in spite of themselves. Jonathon is a producer with Disney – this production is separate from them – I am a professional actress.  And it’s exciting when you hear about youth who invite all their friends over because it’s a very thrilleresque kind of movie and end up talking about a subject that they could never discuss before because it’s presented in a creative way.

Most well-meaning Americans, if they knew what something like partial birth abortion was, if they had that information – they would be completely against it, but how do you get them to look at information that they don’t want to look at.  We picked partial birth abortion because it is the most extreme, barbaric element of the abortion practice and you can get almost everyone to agree that that’s wrong.  So, you start there and you take a step back and you commence discussing.

But, I do have to do a footnote – the good news is that God proved the doctors wrong and we have two beautiful children in spite of what they said.  A huge blessing.

LifeSiteNews: So, where has it been shown so far?  Who is viewing it?

Jonathon:  Well, it’s been interesting.  One of the first screenings was here, but then it was actually screened in the Capitol Building – it went all through-out Capital Hill.  It has also been in film festivals and we also do a lot of speaking and touring amongst pro-life groups - which is really important.  And big churches and things like that – it is being shown in youth groups and there is a study guide that can go along with it so that people can talk.  But, what has really been interesting for a movie of this sort is to get to distribution on Amazon and Netflix and similar venues.

LifeSiteNews: How did you pay for it?

Jonathon:  Well, it was actually a lot of prayer and me bending the ear of one individual – he felt it was also right.  As Deborah always says, it is interesting subject matter, especially being in Hollywood, - to pick a movie or subject such as partial birth abortion.  It’s not exactly what you would do to try to get ahead in Hollywood and so, at the same time, to find people willing to put up their own money.

LifeSiteNews: So, it is a very good tool for discussion of the issue…

Deborah: And to make one thing clear also, even though the message is very clearly pro-life at the end, it does not come across as any kind of a propaganda piece.  In fact, people who are pro-choice watch it and get enthralled in the story – its professional actors, professional crew, done in Hollywood.  Many of the people involved were not pro-life or particularly religious or spiritual in any way shape or form but they felt like it was an interesting story that they wanted to get involved in.

Canada's Heart and Stroke Foundation Continues to Support Embryonic Stem Cell Research

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

By John-Henry Westen OTTAWA, February 5, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - According to the website of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC) some 140,000 volunteers are actively fundraising for the organization during "Heart month", which is this month.  Many of those volunteers, however, do not know that the HSFC is open to funding embryonic stem cell research.

The foundation commenced its association with the controversial practice in 2003 when it issued a "Human Stem Cell Research Policy Statement" admitting to being open to funding destructive research on human embryos as well as research on aborted baby body parts. "In sum, the Foundation will fund research that derives stem cells from i) existing human embryos or, ii) human fetal material resulting from elective abortions".

Since then, pro-life leaders in Canada have warned pro-life Canadians against donating to and volunteering for HSFC and other organizations which support destructive research on human embryos

Volunteers for HSFC at both lower and higher levels have been uninformed about HSFC's support for embryonic stem cell research.  Much confusion on the matter has stemmed from HSFC responses to inquiries about the organization's support for embryonic stem cell research.  A clear statement that HSFC is open to funding human embryonic stem cell research, is not admitted in such response letters, even though that is the policy of the organization.

Door-to-door volunteers for HSFC have contacted LifeSiteNews.com seeking confirmation of our reportage on the organization's support of embryonic stem cell research.  Moreover, a few months ago an area manager for an Ontario branch of the Heart and Stroke Foundation demanded a correction on LifeSiteNews.com, but relented when furnished with evidence that our information was accurate.

Such confusion is understandable since a carefully worded policy document on the matter fails to mention the fact that HSFC will fund embryonic stem cell research which complies with the guidelines of the Canadian Institutes for Health Research.

LifeSiteNews.com has confirmed that the 2007-2008 guidelines for HSFC funding clearly state that HSFC remains open to funding "research involving human pluripotent (embryonic) stem cells."

Calls to HSFC offices for comment were not returned by press time.

Pope Asks Young People to Maintain Virginity Even During Engagement

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

By John-Henry Westen
VATICAN CITY, February 5, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Today, the Vatican released Pope Benedict XVI's message for  the World Youth Day 2007, which is to be celebrated in all dioceses on Palm Sunday, April 1.  The message focuses on love, and a significant portion is dedicated to preparation for marriage.

Rather than assume young people incapable of avoiding premarital relations, the Holy Father challenges youth to remain pure even during a marriage engagement.  "The period of engagement," he said, "very necessary in order to form a couple, is a time of expectation and preparation that needs to be lived in purity of gesture and words."

Typical of Pope Benedict, he provides youth with the reason behind the instruction.  "It allows you to mature in love, in concern and in attention for each other," he said "it helps you to practise self-control and to develop your respect for each other."  The Pope added, "These are the characteristics of true love that does not place emphasis on seeking its own satisfaction or its own welfare."

In his message, the Pope also confronts the false notion that in dealing with youthful love between young men and young women, the Church is little more than an impediment.  "It is essential that you discover," he told young couples the "project of love" which God has planned for you.  Discover it, he said, "with the help of the Church, free from the common prejudice that says that Christianity with its commandments and prohibitions places obstacles to the joy of love and impedes you from fully enjoying the happiness that a man and woman seek in their reciprocal love."

In a concluding message to all youth, the Pope encouraged them to 'dare to love'.  "My dear young friends, I want to invite you to 'dare to love,'" he said. "Do not desire anything less for your life than a love that is strong and beautiful and that is capable of making the whole of your existence a joyful undertaking of giving yourselves as a gift to God and your brothers and sisters."

Pastor Who Performed Hundreds of Gay 'Marriages' Caught in Child Porn Bust

Many of the ‘marriages’ were for U.S. citizens planning to seek legal recognition at home

By Gudrun Schultz

TORONTO, Ontario, February 5, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A prominent pastor in a small Toronto denomination has been charged with possession of child pornography, after police seized videos and photos of children as young as five from his residence, the Toronto Sun reported Feb.3.

Rev. Frederick Patrick Dunleavy, 65, was arrested Wednesday, Jan.31, following a complaint to police from a witness who alleged to have seen pornographic material in his possession. Multiple images, including video footage, were seized during a search warrant of his residence on Thursday, according to a Toronto police press release. The images were of both boys and girls, between the ages of five and 17.

An activist for homosexual rights, Dunleavy boasted in 2004 of having performed hundreds of same-sex weddings, many of them for U.S. citizens planning to seek legal recognition at home, according to a report by the Oregonian in January 2005.

Dunleavy served as Canadian Archbishop of the Ontario Old Catholic Church/Christ Catholic Church, a small offshoot denomination which is not affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. He officiated at St. Andrews Parish in Toronto, saying mass in the chapel of St. Simon‘s Anglican Church.

Police said local children may have been filmed in the material, since many of the images contained children never seen before by police.

“The sex crimes unit recognizes some of the images,” Det.-Const. Amy Bjerknes told the Toronto Sun. Investigators are expecting more information to surface as victims and witnesses come forward.

“Sometimes these investigations have a tendency to grow and that’s why we’re seeking assistance in locating victims,” she said. The police have requested anyone with further information, victims or witnesses, to come forward.

Dunleavy was released with a scheduled court appearance at College Park on Tuesday, March 20, 2007.
