Former Vice President Al Gore Makes Star Debut in Toronto as Global Warming Prophet
Gore preceded Monday by other star global warming doomsters, de-populationist David Suzuki and Sir Nicholas Stern
By Peter J. Smith
TORONTO, February 22, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Former US Vice President Al Gore received a rock star's reception at the University of Toronto last night, where throngs of Canadians gathered to hear his words on global warming and the environment. His visit follows closely on another, similar intense publicity visit to Toronto this past Monday by Global Warming doomsters Sir Nicholas Stern and David Suzuki, a Canadian environmentalist and, like Gore, a strong de-population advocate and abortion supporter.
Gore spoke to Wednesday's sold-out house of 1500 guests, with an enthusiasm from Canadians similar to their enamoured adulation of former US President Bill Clinton, another prominent de-populationist and abortion advocate.
"We had about 23,000 hits on our website, which of course collapsed the website because we couldn't sustain it," UofT's Ingrid Stefanovic told Toronto's CityNews. "So there's been a huge enthusiasm for the event."
Tickets sold out within just a few minutes, and those which originally sold for $20 soon were offered on the Internet auction site Craig's List for prices up to $500, all to see the former vice president proclaim his environmental manifesto.
"It's like a boy band or something coming to town because people just are clamouring to see Al Gore," Catherine Febria told City News. "It's kind of funny."
"Canada, in the past, has always been known for its leadership," Gore told reporters shortly after arriving at the university campus. "And I think now is a time when some people put a question mark after Canada on this."
Gore said he believes Canada's leadership is key to what he sees as a man-made environmental crisis, but he is displeased with the Conservatives' plan to back away from the Kyoto protocols, a treaty heavily in favour of Western democracies such as the United States footing the environmental bill, while giving a pass to heavy polluting industrial nations like the People's Republic of China.
Al Gore's environmental message is a development of ideas first set forth in his 1992 book: Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit, where he wrote: "We must make the rescue of the environment the central organizing principle for civilization." Gore's project means nothing less than a new conception of the individual human being and of civilization.
Gore's book, as well as his recent Academy Award nominated documentary "An Inconvenient Truth", blames human overpopulation and industry for causing global warming, a hypothesis fiercely debated by climatologists, who disagree the extent to which human beings actually contribute to global warming, phenomena that may be due to environmental factors outside human control.
Gore calls for a Global Marshall Plan or Strategic Environmental Initiative, with the first goal as stabilising what he believes is an overpopulated world, with the end result of massively increasing the powers of government to engineer a "wrenching change of society" in order to save the world's ecology.
"Minor shifts in policy, moderate improvement in laws and regulations, rhetoric offered in lieu of genuine change—these are all forms of appeasement," writes Gore, "designed to satisfy the public’s desire to believe that sacrifice, struggle and a wrenching transformation of society will not be necessary."
