Democrats First Order of Day in New US Senate: Penalize Pro-Family Groups
Grassroots lobbying groups would be forced to track every cent spent on any given issue
By Meg Jalsevac
WASHINGTON, January 12, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The new Democratic majority in the United States Senate is poised to pass a new ethics bill that threatens the essential grassroots lobbying efforts and information distribution of pro-family and pro-life organizations.
Under Section 220 of Senate Bill 1, the proposed bill supposedly intended to “provide greater transparency in the legislative process,” would place onerous reporting burdens on any organization that encourages the public to contact any member of the executive or judicial branches of government on an issue. Any organization that does so would have to track each dollar spent as well as report which political issues they focused on and which government officials they communicated with. These figures would have to be submitted quarterly and would be public domain.
American Family Association websites asserts that the requirements would place arduous expectations on small organizations such as theirs, saying, “The compliance costs alone will be heavy, with the hiring of perhaps as many as 8-10 new employees to track both accounting and legal oversight involved and all the paperwork required.”
Expenditures that would have to be reported include employee costs, advertising costs, and mailing and distribution costs. These figures would have to be submitted quarterly and would be available to the public. The staggering compliance costs of monitoring all expenditures on every relevant issue would present a substantial burden to pro-family and conservative organizations that survive on public donations. The bill would also open these organizations’ lobbying plans and strategies to the scrutiny of opposing organizations.
Consequences for not properly complying with the proposed legislation would include fines up to $100,000.
Section 220 of Senate Bill 1, entitled “Disclosure of paid efforts to stimulate grassroots Lobbying” presents a clear attack on the effective grassroots lobbying of conservative groups since it provides exemptions for the more affluent organizations and corporations who can afford to employ lobbyists to contact government officials rather than relying on grassroots efforts. It also protects the communications of organized groups like the AFL-CIO and MoveOn.org under exceptions for communications to an organization’s “members, employees, officers or shareholders.”
American Family Association president, Don Wildmon said that the bill is being supported by both sides of the political spectrum because “they are tired of hearing from their constituencies.” AFA’s website is providing contact information and encouraging the public to contact their senators and request that they vote “No” on Senate Bill 1.

Actor Sylvester Stallone Returns to Christian Faith, Includes Conversion in New Movie
By Gudrun Schultz
LOS ANGELES, California, January 12, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Sylvester Stallone, of “Rocky” and “Rambo” fame, has come back to his Christian roots, in a conversion experience that he says has released him from the pressures of the world.
“The more I go to church,” Stallone said, reported Focus on the Family’s CitizenLink, “and the more I turn myself over to the process of believing in Jesus and listening to His Word and having Him guide my hand, I feel as though the pressure is off me now.”
Stallone’s new movie, Rocky Balboa, is the latest and final chapter in the ‘Rocky’ series, reflecting the star’s conviction that life is about following Christ, not battling it out alone.
“It’s like [Rocky] was being chosen, Jesus was over him, and he was going to be the fellow that would live through the example of Christ,” Stallone said In a conference call with pastors and religious leaders late last fall. “He’s very, very forgiving. There’s no bitterness in him. He always turns the other cheek. And it’s like his whole life was about service.”
“I was raised in a Catholic home, a Christian home, and I went to Catholic schools and I was taught the faith and went as far as I could with it,” Stallone said. “Until one day, you know, I got out in the so-called real world and I was presented with temptation. I kind of like lost my way and made a lot of bad choices.”
Stallone said he wants to communicate to audiences the importance of attending church and receiving support in living out Christian faith .
“You need to have the expertise and the guidance of someone else,” he said. “You cannot train yourself. I feel the same way about Christianity and about what the church is: The church is the gym of the soul.”
The story of a spiritually-convicted Rocky who reads the Bible before each fight was written out of the actor’s own life experience, Stallone said.
“Most of my previous films were bloody,” he told the San Francisco Chronicle. “They were the creative results of my youth, when my marriage was not going well and I felt myself seduced by the temptations of Hollywood.”
“I needed to actually go through my trials and tribulations,” he said, “before I could be man enough to know how to write the kind of story that ‘Rocky Balboa’ is.”
Stallone developed a free leader’s resource kit, in association with Motive Entertainment, to help pastors and church leaders utilize the film’s Christian message. The kit includes a free downloadable leader’s guide address the issues of courage, integrity, faith, victory and purpose, the Christian Examiner reported. The guide has several approaches tailored to meet the varying needs of pastors, youth leaders, lay ministry leaders and parents.
Stallone’s first portrayal of the character “Rocky” in his screenplay by the same name won the film the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1976.

Attempt to Defeat “Homophobic Hate Crimes” Legislation Fails in House of Lords
Condemned as tool to force religious people to promote homosexual ideologies
By Hilary White
LONDON, January 12, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) – An attempt has failed January 9 in the House of Lords to stop the implementation of the UK’s Sexual Orientation Regulations (SOR), that would criminalize “homophobic hate crimes” in the provision of goods and services, including education.
The SOR provisions that did not appear directly in the Equality Act passed in February 2006, came into effect in Northern Ireland on January 1, and are scheduled to do so in the rest of Britain in April.
While police estimated that as many as 3000 people rallied outside Parliament demanding repeal of the law, the Lords voted down the motion to annul the legislation 199 to 68, after two hours of debate. Labour Peers were instructed to vote along party lines, while other parties allowed a free conscience vote.
Christian leaders across denominational lines, as well as Jewish and Muslims groups, have condemned the law as a tool of the homosexual activist movement to force religious people to promote the homosexual ideologies, especially in religious schools.
Thomas Cordrey of the Lawyers' Christian Fellowship, which organized the rally, told CNN, “Christians have no desire to discriminate unjustly on the grounds of sexual orientation, but they cannot and must not be forced to actively condone and promote sexual practices which the Bible teaches are wrong.”
Religious groups say the law goes even further than enforcing silence on sexual morality but will force religious schools to actively endorse homosexuality as morally equivalent to natural sexual relations and marriage.
The groups have summarized their concerns saying that the new law will mean Christian-operated B&B’s will break the law if they refuse to allow a gay couple to share a bed in their house. Churches may not refuse to hire its hall to homosexual lobby groups. Schools will be required to remove any "bias" in favour of heterosexuality or natural marriage.
The government document, Stand Up for Us: Challenging Homophobia in Schools, currently holding the status of “guidelines,” defines heterosexism as “the presumption that everyone is heterosexual.” These guidelines for schools could take on the force of criminal law after April.
In December, a Home Office report recommended that schools and teachers who failed enthusiastically to endorse homosexual “rights” should be reported to police. The paper on "homophobic hate crime" defined homophobia as "resentment, or fear, of gay and lesbian people" which "can be just a passive dislike of gay people".
Critics of the SOR laws say that a major flaw is the subjective nature of a complaint of “homophobia.” The Christian Lawyers’ group Christian Concern for our Nation, says the inclusion in Northern Ireland of a further prohibition against “harassment” is especially troubling “because the definition of harassment relies largely on the perception of the person who claims they were harassed.”
“All they need do is allege that someone has ‘violated their dignity’ or that someone created a ‘hostile or insulting environment’ for them, and they can take legal action.”
An attempt to stop the implementation of SOR in Northern Ireland failed in December and the law’s opponents are pursuing legal avenues through the courts.

Alberta Gov't Admits Cell-Lines from Aborted Babies used in Vaccines, Offers Ethical Alternative
By John-Henry Westen
OTTAWA, January 12, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Deputy Minister of Health in Alberta has admitted that the both federal and provincial public health agencies are aware that some vaccines in use in Canada were produced with the use of cell-lines from aborted babies. Furthermore, the Alberta government is set to provide alternative vaccines that are not tainted by abortion.
The admission comes in a letter to Canadian Physicians for Life (CPL) which wrote the government in November demanding an alternative to vaccines tainted by abortion. Alberta Health and Wellness Deputy Minister Paddy Meade, in a December 22 letter to CPL President Dr. Will Johnston, writes: "PHAC (Public Health Agency of Canada) and Alberta Health and Wellness (AHW) are aware that some vaccines are made from human cell-line cultures which were derived from embryonic tissue from three medically indicated abortions conducted decades ago (1960s).
The letter from Alberta Health and Wellness also states that the Alberta Government will make Pediacel available in publicly funded immunization programs after March 2007.
Until this announcement, the only combined infant vaccine (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio and Haemophilus B) available to Canadian parents was Pentacel, which is partly derived from a cell line created from aborted fetal tissue. Pediacel (same diseases) is not derived from fetal tissue.
In November, Canadian Physicians for Life sent a letter to each provincial health minister and the federal health minister, requesting that a choice between Pentacel and Pediacel be provided to parents who are morally troubled by the origins of the Pentacel vaccine.
Canadian Physicians for Life applauds Alberta's decision to provide an alternative to the ethically controversial Pentacel vaccine and requests other provinces to follow Alberta's lead in providing a choice to Canadian parents.

Swiss Bishops Demand Accurate Government Account of Frozen Embryos
By Gudrun Schultz
ZURICH, Switzerland, January 12, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Switzerland’s bishops have asked the federal government to address “particularly grave” flaws in records of the of use frozen human embryos, demanding the release of information missing from records for the past five years.
The bioethics commission of the Swiss Episcopal conference expressed deep concern over the records of the official statistics tracking human embryo production and use, incomplete since 2001, Zenit News Agency reported on Monday.
Dr. Urs Kayser, on behalf of the commission, wrote to the director of the Federal Office of Statistics, Adelheid Burgi-Schmelz, accusing the office of illegal action in failing to keep accurate records. In particular, the commission wants an accounting of the source for the 100 embryos used in stem cell research, which are not included in the country’s official census on embryos conceived in vitro.
“Transparency is lacking in the use of surplus embryos,” Dr. Kayser wrote.
Failure to keep track of “surplus” human embryos in storage has been an ongoing problem in the country, with authorities admitting in 2003 that they had lost count of the number of embryos frozen through in vitro technology.
Switzerland’s “usually scrupulous statistics gatherers have failed to keep a tally,” SwissInfo reported at the time, causing alarm on both sides of the debate on the ethics of using human embryos in experimentation.

US Judge Allows Suit Against Vatican
Attorney not content with $25 million Archdiocesan settlement; wants Vatican implicated
By Cassidy Bugos
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky, January 12, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Three men who claim they were sexually abused by priests in their childhood can pursue damages from the Vatican, U.S. District Judge John G. Heyburn II ruled Thursday.
William McMurry, the plaintiffs’ attorney, won a $25.7 million settlement with the Archdiocese of Louisville in June 2003. A year later, he launched a new federal suit against the Vatican, saying that “financial responsibility should be shared, if not borne entirely, by the Vatican.”
Bill Donahue, President of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, stated that accusing the Vatican of implication in U.S. priests’ sex abuse crimes is “bogus.” He cited victims’ attorney Roderick MacLeish Jr.: “I have reviewed thousands of pages of documents surrendered by the Archdiocese of Boston, but haven’t seen a scintilla of evidence that the Vatican knew what was going on.”
Judge Heyburn’s decision to allow the suit to proceed against the Vatican is a reversal of his October 7, 2005 ruling that the Holy See is immune from the jurisdiction of U.S. courts under the U.S. Foreign Sovereign Immunity Act.
One of the current plaintiffs, Michael Turner, had his case resolved in the 2003 settlement. Rev. Louis E. Miller pleaded guilty in that case to having sexually abused Turner and other children in the 1970s. Miller was removed from the priesthood the following year by Pope John Paul II. He is now serving a 13-year prison sentence.
The other two plaintiffs, James H. O’Bryan and Donald E. Poppe, both California residents who grew up in Louisville, have never settled their claims in court. Both their claims are much older than Turner’s.
O’Bryan claims that in 1928 he was fondled by a “Fr. Lawrence” while volunteering in the school library. According to an Archdiocesan spokesperson, a Fr. Lawrence Kuntz worked at O’Bryan’s parish from 1928-1935, and died in 1952.
Poppe alleges he was molested as a child by a Rev. Arthur Wood, who died in 1983 and was named as a molester by 39 other plaintiffs who settled in 2003.
Donahue alleges that what motivated McMurry to bring this suit against the Vatican is a certain 1962 Vatican document, leaked to the press, that McMurry contends reveals “how the Vatican planned to cover up cases of sexual abuse.”
“But the document, as we’ve pointed out many times before, not only does not implicate the Vatican—it proves how serious it took cases of alleged abuse,” said Donahue. “For example, it prescribed penalties for any priest who ‘whether by words or signs or nods of the head’ might convey a sexual advance in the confessional . . . It also prescribed penalties for the penitent if he or she didn’t report such conduct. In other words, the 1962 document is a model of excellence.”
Donahue also mentioned that out of the $25.7 million Archdiocesan settlement, “McMurry . . . managed to cream $10.3 million off the top for himself and his legal team.”
Despite ruling to allow the suit to proceed, Judge Heyburn dismissed McMurry’s allegations of Vatican negligence in ‘failing to protect’ children entrusted to the clergy. He also rejected claims of deceit and misrepresentation by the Holy See.
Jeffrey Lena, a California-based Vatican attorney, believes the ruling could prove favorable to the Holy See because the remaining allegations rest on the unproved assumption that U.S. bishops are agents of the Vatican. He predicted that as the case proceeds this claim too will not be found to hold water.
In addition to his settlement with the Archdiocese and his ongoing suit against the Vatican, McMurry has also brought suit against the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth on charges of sex abuse crimes, settling with them for $1.5 million in August 2006.

France: January 21 International March for Life Expected to Draw 10,000 Participants
By Gudrun Schultz
PARIS, France, January 12, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Federation of Organizations in the Defense of Life is anticipating at least 10,000 participants for the 2007 March for Life scheduled for Paris January 21, with pro-life groups from several European countries expected to attend again this year.
Pro-life delegations from Spain, Belgium, Germany and Italy have been invited to participate--organizers have emphasized the need to build greater unity among branches of the pro-life movement.
“Thousands of people participated in the great march for life in 2005 and 2006. This year, it’s going to be even more numerous!” organizers said in a press release yesterday.
“If you can come to Paris on that day, we will be delighted to meet you and introduce you to the crowd! We must unite and build a pro-life network here in Europe if we want to influence European decision making!”
As well, the organizers are asking pro-life supporters who are unable to attend to send written declarations of support.
March organizers spoke out on the ever-increasing death toll of abortion in the nation, saying, “here in France, 220,000 children are murdered each year through abortion. And more than 7 million people have been killed since the legalization of abortion in the country.”
Abortion in France “has consequences for demographic aging, the closing of maternity homes and schools and the problem of pensions for retirees,” the statement said, as well as leading to the breakdown of the family and the devaluing of the human person.
This will be the third year the March for Life has been held in Paris, following previous marches held in 2005 and 2006. Ten thousand participants, among them large numbers of young people, joined the march last year. Youth from Spain, Belgium and Germany were well represented at the demonstration.
The march, which will coincide with the annual U.S. March for Life held in Washington on Jan. 22, has particular significance this year as France heads towards a presidential election in April . Life issues are expected to be a key playing point in candidates’ platforms, Catholic News Agency reported yesterday.
