Indian Man Sentenced to Five Years of Rigorous Imprisonment for Forcing his Wife to Undergo Abortion
By John Jalsevac
BARGARH, India, July 5, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A Bargargh judge has sentenced Minketan Bhainsa to five years of rigorous imprisonment (hard labor) and fined him Rs 2,000 for forcing his wife to have an abortion, reports newindpress.com.
According to the complaint filed by Ushabati Bhainsa, the wife of Minketan, she was tortured by her husband and her father-in law and then forced to have the abortion. The child she was pregnant with was her third.
In many parts of India coercive population control policies have long been in place, and the two-child, boy-girl family is the norm. After having a second child, many couples will be sterilized, or will abort any subsequent children.
In a report from last year on India's population control policies, LifeSiteNews.com interviewed an Indian Catholic priest who said that in the province of Kerala it is considered "virtuous" to limit the size of one's family, and that people will use "whatever savage method they can" to limit children.
Sunny Kattukaran, the leader of a pro-life group in India known as Trust God (Pro-Life) Ministry, also told LifeSiteNews.com last year that Western ideology on population control has seriously affected Indian families, pointing out that in many cases they have been coerced to keep their population down.
He explained that a lot of the pressure for the population control policies comes from wealthier Western countries and organizations: "The Americans, the UN and other funding agents, when they release some funds as loans they ask our statistics on birth control, and insist on family planning criteria, only then do they pump money."
"Our politicians," he says, "take that money and promise" to carry out the population control agenda, some believing falsely that it is for the benefit of the people.
