American Cancer Society Gives Planned Parenthood Grant Money for Just Saying No - to Smoking
By Peter J. Smith
DES MOINES, Iowa, March 6, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The American Cancer Society has awarded Planned Parenthood a $5,000 grant to train staff to help their "patients" to quit smoking as part of a campaign to reduce cancer.
The ACS grant will expand a smoking-cessation program begun by the American Legacy Foundation to 7 abortion centers of Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa. The ALF started the program in 2005 at Polk County centers with a $23,000 grant to which the American Cancer Society contributed $3,000 in 2006.
However, STOPP International, an affiliate of American Life League, noted in a report that the American Cancer Society is funding an agency that at the same time offers high-dose hormonal contraception containing dangerous carcinogenic chemicals. In fact, the American Cancer Society itself lists oral contraceptives as increasing a woman's risk of breast cancer by 24%, while a 2006 report in the journal of the Mayo Clinic found a risk factor increase of 44% for pre-menopausal breast cancer in woman. In 2005, The World Health Organization (WHO) listed hormonal contraceptives as carcinogenic and confirmed they increased the risk of breast, cervical, and liver cancer in women.
Pro-life advocates note that perhaps Planned Parenthood could use the funds from the ACS to educate their "patients" how to have "safe smoke" and use more effective filters, a philosophy completely compatible with their position on abstinence education.
"If we want kids to not smoke, we say, 'Don't smoke!'… But when we want to prevent STDs and teen pregnancy, we say, 'here's a piece of rubber to protect yourself.,'" said Jim Sedlak of STOPP International.
STOPP has asked people to demand the American Cancer Society show it cares about women's entire health and not just their lungs, and cease granting money to Planned Parenthood while it participates in proven cancer-causing work.
