General Pace - Chair of US Joint Chiefs of Staff: “homosexual acts…are immoral”
Would oppose changing the law to allow openly homosexual soldiers to serve
By Gudrun Schultz
WASHINGTON, D.C., March 13, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The chairman of the U.S. military Joint Chiefs of Staff spoke out against homosexuality Monday, saying homosexual activity is “immoral” and should not be condoned by the military.
“I do not believe the United states is well served by a policy that says it is OK to be immoral in any way,” Marine General Peter Pace told the Chicago Tribune in an interview yesterday.
“I believe homosexual acts between two individuals are immoral and that we should not condone immoral acts,” Pace said, likening homosexuality to adultery, which he said was also immoral.
"As an individual, I would not want [acceptance of gay behavior] to be our policy, just like I would not want it to be our policy that if we were to find out that so-and-so was sleeping with somebody else's wife, that we would just look the other way, which we do not. We prosecute that kind of immoral behavior," Pace said.
The general said his views stemmed from his personal “upbringing”, where he was taught that some types of behavior are immoral.
The general said he supports the current “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy employed by the Pentagon towards homosexual men and women in the military, which prohibits military commanders from asking candidates about their sexual orientation but says persons with homosexual inclinations must keep their sexual orientation private and avoid homosexual activity. The policy became law under President Clinton in 1994.
Legislation was introduced in Congress last month that would see the military’s current ban on openly homosexual individuals reversed. General Pace said he would oppose changing the law to allow openly homosexual soldiers to serve.
General Pace’s comments are expected to receive strong condemnation and calls for his resignation from influential gay activist organizations and individuals. They have already triggered an angry response from homosexual activist groups who called for an immediate apology.
