Police Say Murder of Mother and Unborn Child a Crime that “Defies Comprehension”
Husband arrested and charged with 2nd degree murder
By Hilary White
SURREY, March 13, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com – On October 18, 2006 Manjit Panghali, a teacher four months pregnant with her second child, went out to attend a pre-natal class at a local yoga center in South Surrey, British Columbia and did not return home. In a statement released yesterday, police said her husband, Mukhtiar Panghali has been arrested and charged with 2nd degree murder.
On October 23, police found the charred remains of a body later identified as that of Mrs. Panghali.
Delta Police spokesman, Constable Sharlene Brooks said at a press conference in October, “Mrs. Panghali and her unborn child have had their lives taken prematurely and very tragically. This type of crime defies comprehension and the value of human life.”
There is no provision in Canada’s criminal code to charge a person for murder in the death of an unborn child. Previous attempts in this country to find legal redress for the death of an unborn child have resulted in court decisions denying the existence of the child before birth.
Since the election of a Conservative government, advocates of the right to life and of victims’ rights have anticipated the introduction of a bill that would allow for prosecution of violent crimes that result in harm to an unborn victim.
