Irish Government Lawyers to Represent Unborn Child in Abortion Case
By Hilary White
DUBLIN, May 4, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Ireland’s Attorney General has instructed a senior counsel to represent separately the interests of an unborn child in a case at the High Court. LifeSiteNews.com reported earlier this week that a 17 year-old mother, four months pregnant and in the care of the Health Service Executive, was granted permission to bring a rushed suit against the HSE to allow her to travel to Britain to abort her unborn child.
The HSE counsel, James Connolly SC, told Mr Justice Liam McKechnie that the Attorney General had told him to represent the unborn child who has been diagnosed with anencephaly. Two teams of lawyers will be involved in the case, one for the state and one for the child. The suit is being brought against the District Justice, the HSE, Ireland and the Attorney General.
The Catholic Primate of Ireland, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin told news media today that there is no such thing as a “right” to an abortion and that the child, no matter what its medical condition is “a human person with rights.”
“[The baby] is still a human person and therefore has rights. The legal problem was there for the entire last session of the Dail [Parliament] and I saw no politician rushing to address it.”
