Convicted "Euthanasia" Murderer Robert Latimer Applies For Day Parole
Killed 12 year old cerebral palsy daughter Tracy
By Thaddeus M. Baklinski
REGINA, November 27, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A date has been set for a parole hearing in the case of Saskatchewan farmer Robert Latimer who is serving a life sentence for killing his disabled daughter during what he claims was an act of compassionate euthanasia.
On December 5 the National Parole Board will consider whether Latimer should be released on day parole from William Head Institution, a minimum-security prison in Victoria.
Two different juries found Latimer guilty of second-degree murder in the 1993 death of his 12 year old daughter Tracy, who was born with cerebral palsy. Latimer killed his daughter on October 24, 1993 by leaving her in the family pickup truck with the motor running and a hose from the tail pipe extended into the cab, while the rest of his family was at church.
The mandatory minimum sentence of life in prison without a chance of parole for 10 years was upheld by the Supreme Court and Latimer, now 54, began serving his sentence in 2001.
Day parole is a form of conditional release that allows offenders to be at large in the community and to participate in community-based activities, but they must return to a prison at night.
The case sparked national debate about euthanasia, and the mainstream media bias became immediately apparent. Describing Latimer's actions as "filled with love, mercy and compassion" for his daughter and publishing questionable poll results (indicating Canadians believed Latimer was justified in killing his daughter) during the time of the trial did little, fortunately for disabled Canadians, to sway the Saskatchewan court jurors or the Supreme Court from finding Latimer guilty.
