Report Reveals Komen Gave Over $700 Thousand to Planned Parenthood in One Year
STOPP calls for end to Komen funding
By Michael Baggot
STAFFORD, VA, April 10, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In light of the continuing controversy over whether or not Catholics should support the Susan B. Komen for the Cure breast cancer organization, STOPP, a project of the American Life League dedicated to shutting down Planned Parenthood, released a report Wednesday detailing the $711,485 in funding various Komen affiliates contributed to PP branches across the nation from April 2005-April 2006.
The STOPP report pinpoints 21 different Komen affiliates that have given significant sums of money to 26 different PP facilities.
The report also suggests that Komen's support for the abortion and contraceptive behemoth PP "does not make sense, since not only is there a direct connection between abortion and breast cancer, but scientific studies show that there is a direct connection between chemical contraception and breast cancer as well."
"The fact that Komen Affiliates give money to PP contradicts Komen's claim that it works to end breast cancer," adds the report.
STOPP is encouraging donors to end Komen support "until this organization repents and stops giving money to Planned Parenthood, an organization that kills babies, exploits women, corrupts youth and increases the likelihood of breast cancer by promoting contraception and abortion."
As LifeSiteNews.com reported in March, Komen has dismissed outright the scientifically supported connection between breast cancer and abortion (see http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2008/mar/08033108.html).
Concerning the connection between breast cancer and the oral contraceptive pill, an important 1989 study "found that nulliparous women (i.e. women who have not had children) who took OCPs had a significantly higher rate of breast cell division than nulliparous women who did not take them. This was especially important because it is known that in general, cells that divide more rapidly are more vulnerable to carcinogens (i.e. cancer producing agents) and thus more likely to become cancerous," stated the Polycarp Research Institute.
Subsequent studies have confirmed the results of the 1989 research (see http://www.polycarp.org/overviewbreastcanceroralcontraceptiv...).
After discouraging Komen funding in February, the Little Rock Diocese in March issued an apology and retraction of their initial position. Following Little Rock's policy reversal, however, both the St. Louis and Lafayette dioceses reaffirmed their opposition to Komen support.
Both St. Louis and Lafayette encouraged readers to support local hospitals engaged in breast cancer research and treatment, rather than Komen.
