EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS: Kerry, Dodd Receive Communion at Papal Mass, Kennedy Also Receives

By John-Henry Westen

WASHINGTON, DC, April 17, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - At the papal Mass at Nationals Park this morning with 46,000 in attendance, pro-abortion Senators John Kerry and Chris Dodd presented themselves for and received Holy Communion.  Photos taken by Tom McFadden Director of Admissions at Christendom College and provided first to LifeSiteNews.com, show Kerry and Dodd receiving while Kennedy remains seated as his row leaves to receive Communion.

Senator Ted Kennedy was thought to not have received communion because of his remaining seated, but the next day LifeSiteNews received the following statement from Daniel J. Skehan, who was near Kennedy at the function:

"Two of my sons and I attended the Papal Mass yesterday. We were seated in section 216, directly above the section in which Ted Kennedy was seated. Several minutes prior to the general distribution of communion a priest walked down to Ted Kennedy and gave him communion. There was some discussion amongst we in our section about the inappropriateness of his reception of the Host. Be certain, he remained seated not out of some self-enforced respect for the sacrament, but rather out of respect for his girth and mobility."

American Life League (ALL) President Judie Brown told LifeSiteNews.com that no pro-abortion politicians received Holy Communion directly from Pope Benedict during the Mass. ALL had taken out a full page ad warning Catholic pro-abortion politicians not to sacrilegiously receive the Eucharist.

While the highest authorities in the Vatican and indeed the Pope himself have insisted that pro-abortion Catholic politicians be denied Holy Communion, several prominent US bishops with the leading of now-retired Washington Cardinal Theodore McCarrick have refused to follow such direction from Rome.

Francis Cardinal Arinze, the Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, speaking at a Catholic family conference in Ohio last November confirmed that pro-abortion politicians must be denied communion.  He referenced a 2004 letter on the subject sent by then-Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, who said that such politicians "must" be refused Communion (see coverage: http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2008/apr/08040408.html).

Since becoming Pope, Benedict XVI has also addressed the subject.  In March 2007 the Pope warned Catholic pro-abortion politicians against receiving Communion. In the document on Holy Communion, called "Sacramentum Caritatis" or the Sacrament of Love, Benedict XVI gave Catholic politicians a biblical warning against receiving Communion unworthily.

In a section on "Eucharistic consistency", the Pope said that politicians must adhere to "non negotiable" values "such as respect for human life, its defence from conception to natural death, the family built upon marriage between a man and a woman, the freedom to educate one's children and the promotion of the common good in all its forms." He added, "Consequently, Catholic politicians and legislators, conscious of their grave responsibility before society, must feel particularly bound, on the basis of a properly formed conscience, to introduce and support laws inspired by values grounded in human nature."

"There is an objective connection here with the Eucharist," he said referencing the Biblical passage 1 Corinthians 11:27-29.  That passage reads: "Therefore whosoever shall eat this bread, or drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and of the blood of the Lord.  But let a man prove himself: and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of the chalice.  For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh judgment to himself, not discerning the body of the Lord." Revealed as HOAX: Yale Student Did Not Impregnate Herself or Have Multiple Abortions for School "Art" Project

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

By John-Henry Westen

April 17, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The internationally reported art project of a Yale University art major  who said she would document a nine-month process during which she artificially inseminated herself "as often as possible" while periodically taking abortifacient drugs, has been revealed as a hoax.

Yale released a statement today indicating that senior student Aliza Shvarts "stated to three senior Yale University officials today, including two deans, that she did not impregnate herself and that she did not induce any miscarriages." The statement added, "The entire project is an art piece, a creative fiction designed to draw attention to the ambiguity surrounding form and function of a woman’s body." Yale defended Shvarts' project stating, "She is an artist and has the right to express herself through performance art," but added, "Had these acts been real, they would have violated basic ethical standards and raised serious mental and physical health concerns."

According to a report in the Yale University newspaper, the Yale Daily News, Shvarts was to commence a display of her senior art project Tuesday which reportedly featured her artificial inseminations and drug induced abortions.

"Her exhibition will feature video recordings of these forced miscarriages as well as preserved collections of the blood from the process," said the paper. "The goal in creating the art exhibition, Shvarts said, was to spark conversation and debate on the relationship between art and the human body."

"I hope it inspires some sort of discourse," Shvarts told the paper. "Sure, some people will be upset with the message and will not agree with it, but it's not the intention of the piece to scandalize anyone."

The paper suggested that some students did disagree with the 'art,' but Shvarts also was able to find other enthusiasts. Art major Juan Castillo told the paper "I really loved the idea of this project, but a lot other people didn't. I think that most people were very resistant to thinking about what the project was really about."

For her part, Shvarts indicated that her education in 'art' at Yale has taught her that her project is appropriate. "I believe strongly that art should be a medium for politics and ideologies, not just a commodity," Shvarts told the Daily Yale. "I think that I'm creating a project that lives up to the standard of what art is supposed to be."

The story seemed believable coming from Yale, since the university has a history of unquestioning abortion support.

In 2006, the university announced that ob/gyn residents at Yale's School of Medicine must undergo training in abortion procedures in a required residency program established by Planned Parenthood's Connecticut branch (PPC). In 2007, the university observed "Roe v. Wade" week in which pro-abortion campus clubs taught students how to commit the "simple procedure" of abortion - a procedure made complicated and "emotionally traumatic" by "media attention."

Pope Tells Bishops they Must Deal with Sex Abuse Scandal by Addressing All of Sexual Morality

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

By John-Henry Westen

WASHINGTON, DC, April 17, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Pope Benedict XVI addressed US Bishops yesterday at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.  One of the themes of his US visit thus far has been to address the clergy sexual abuse scandal.  However, in addressing the issue the Pope said that the Bishops must address it "within the wider context of sexual mores."

He said that the Bishops of the US need to clear the barriers to an encounter with Christ.  "While it is true that this country is marked by a genuinely religious spirit, the subtle influence of secularism can nevertheless color the way people allow their faith to influence their behavior," he said.

In this context he made poignant remarks regarding promoting anti-life medical practices such as abortion and assisted suicide, and promoting homosexuality and other aberrant sexual behavior.  "Is it consistent to profess our beliefs in church on Sunday, and then during the week to promote business practices or medical procedures contrary to those beliefs?" he asked.  "Is it consistent for practicing Catholics to ignore or exploit the poor and the marginalized, to promote sexual behavior contrary to Catholic moral teaching, or to adopt positions that contradict the right to life of every human being from conception to natural death?"

He added: "Any tendency to treat religion as a private matter must be resisted. Only when their faith permeates every aspect of their lives do Christians become truly open to the transforming power of the Gospel."

He directed the Bishops several times to give guidance to those in health care with its "previously unimagined ethical challenges."

Addressing the matter of Catholics in the public square the Pope told the Bishops that "it cannot be assumed that all Catholic citizens think in harmony with the Church's teaching on today's key ethical questions."  Thus, he said, "it falls to you to ensure that the moral formation provided at every level of ecclesial life reflects the authentic teaching of the Gospel of life."

The Pope said the "state of the family within society" was a "matter of deep concern."

"How can we not be dismayed as we observe the sharp decline of the family as a basic element of Church and society?" he said.  "Divorce and infidelity have increased, and many young men and women are choosing to postpone marriage or to forego it altogether. To some young Catholics, the sacramental bond of marriage seems scarcely distinguishable from a civil bond, or even a purely informal and open-ended arrangement to live with another person."

He continued: "Hence we have an alarming decrease in the number of Catholic marriages in the United States together with an increase in cohabitation, in which the Christ-like mutual self-giving of spouses, sealed by a public promise to live out the demands of an indissoluble lifelong commitment, is simply absent. In such circumstances, children are denied the secure environment that they need in order truly to flourish as human beings, and society is denied the stable building blocks which it requires if the cohesion and moral focus of the community are to be maintained."

Quoting John Paul II, he said, "The person principally responsible in the Diocese for the pastoral care of the family is the Bishop."

Thus he said, "It is your task to proclaim boldly the arguments from faith and reason in favor of the institution of marriage, understood as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman, open to the transmission of life."

Regarding the policies to address the sexual abuse scandal put in place by the US Bishops, the Holy Father said, "If they are to achieve their full purpose, however, the policies and programs you have adopted need to be placed in a wider context."

In this regard the Pope insisted that "Children deserve to grow up with a healthy understanding of sexuality and its proper place in human relationships. They should be spared the degrading manifestations and the crude manipulation of sexuality so prevalent today. They have a right to be educated in authentic moral values rooted in the dignity of the human person."

He specifically identified the evil of pornography in this regard.  "What does it mean to speak of child protection when pornography and violence can be viewed in so many homes through media widely available today?" he said.  "We need to reassess urgently the values underpinning society, so that a sound moral formation can be offered to young people and adults alike."

Oklahoma House and Senate Overwhelmingly Override Governor's Veto of Pro-Life Bill

By Thaddeus M. Baklinski

OKLAHOMA CITY, April 17, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Oklahoma state representatives and senators today voted overwhelmingly to override Governor Brad Henry's veto of a bill requiring women to receive an ultrasound examination before proceeding with an abortion.

The House voted 81 to 15 and the Senate 37 to 11 to override the veto.

The bill contains a number of pro-life initiatives and expands on anti-abortion legislation passed in 2006 that required abortion doctors to tell a woman she had a right to a free ultrasound exam at an offsite location.

The bill originally passed the Senate 38 to 10 and the House, 80 to 12 last week.

In vetoing the legislation Wednesday night, Governor Henry objected to the bill not having an exception for victims of rape and incest.

"While I support reasonable restrictions on abortion, this legislation does not provide an essential exemption for victims of rape and incest," Henry said last night in his veto message to the Legislature.

Tony Lauinger, chairman of Oklahomans for Life, said in response to Governor Henry's veto, "Abortion is not a solution to the tragedy of rape or incest. Abortion is a second tragedy which compounds the tragedy of rape or incest."

He added that an ultrasound gives a woman "essential information which would allow her to give truly informed consent."

Sen. Todd Lamb, R-Edmond, and State Rep. Pam Peterson, who introduced the legislation, and which has overwhelming support among Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate, are now urging Governor Henry to sign the bill into law.

The most notable pro-life measures in the piece of legislation are: the creation of the Freedom of Conscience Act which protects the rights of healthcare providers to refuse to take part in the destruction of human life; ensuring the chemical abortion pill, RU 486, is used in accordance with FDA guidelines; ensuring the mother's consent to abort is truly voluntary, and protection against coerced abortions; providing a woman with an ultrasound of her unborn child which she can view prior to undergoing the abortion; and cultivating respect for disabled children by banning the wrongful-life lawsuits that claim a baby would have been better off aborted.

"This legislation is pro-woman, pro-child and pro-life," State Rep. Peterson said. "The more information a woman can have before making this life-altering decision, the better. I hope Governor Henry will do the right thing and sign this legislation into law."

In related news, women in South Carolina now have to be given the option of viewing an ultrasound image of their unborn child at least one hour before undergoing an abortion.

The new legislation ends more than a year of debate by House and Senate lawmakers over whether to require a woman to view the ultrasound before an abortion.

Women are now given the right to either look at the screen during the ultrasound or see a printed image. They also must sign a form verifying they've been given the option.

Dutch Gov't to Marriage Commissioners: Won't do Gay "Marriages"? Then No Natural Marriages Either

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

By Hilary White

THE HAGUE, April 17, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Netherlands equality commissioners have ruled that if a civil marriage commissioner refuses to conduct wedding ceremonies for homosexual partners, they must be barred from conducting ceremonies between men and women as well.

The Equal Treatment Commission (CGB) ruled yesterday that local authorities are "not violating the equal treatment law if it refuses to appoint a marriage registrar who does not wish to marry persons of the same sex on grounds of religion".

The judgment comes after the municipality of Langedijk placed advertisements for two marriage registrars and demanded that applicants be prepared to conduct wedding ceremonies for natural couples and for same-sex partners.

The Christian Union party called the ruling an "unnecessarily harsh approach."

The party, Christen Unie, is a Dutch orthodox-protestant and Christian-social party that holds "conservative" social views and centre left ideas on economic, migration, social and environmental issues.

A party spokesman said, "This ruling does not help us further in the search for a careful balance between groups in society with differing beliefs" about homosexual "marriage".

When it comes to freedom of conscience for Christians and anyone who objects on moral grounds to homosexuality, however, it seems that homosexual political activists are only willing to apply tolerance to those who agree with their views.

In 2007 in Canada, homosexual activists fought efforts to allow marriage commissioners the right to exercise their freedom of conscience. When a Conservative MLA in New Brunswick tabled a piece of legislation meant to protect Christians and others who objected to the imposition of "gay marriage", homosexual activists responded with outrage, saying the legislation would grant rights to individuals who "discriminate" and would be an affront to the "equal marriage" movement.

Brazilian Bishops Condemn Attempts to Legalize Abortion, Stem Cell Research

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

By Matthew Hoffman

INDAIATUBA, April 17, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Brazil's Catholic bishops have reiterated their firm opposition to abortion, noting that "human life is sacred.  The right to life underlies all other rights. From fertilization to its natural end, life is the fruit of the creative action of God, 'Lord and Friend of Life', and always remains in a relationship with Him, its only purpose. Every human being has the responsibility to receive and bring to fruition this inestimable divine gift."

"The Magisterium (teaching authority) of the Church defends the right to life, which is fundamental in any phase of development or condition in which it is found.  Human life cannot be made into an instrument, violated, or destroyed," wrote the bishops.

The statement, made during the 46th assembly of the National Conference of Brazilian Bishops (CNBB) last week, reiterates the firm stance made by the bishops earlier this year with the launch of their annual Fraternity Campaign with the theme, "Fraternity and the Defense of Life".

It unequivocally condemns abortion and embryonic stem cell research, denouncing recent attempts to legalize such practices in Brazil.

Citing the recent Aparecida Declaration, made in the western hemisphere's largest shrine earlier this year, the Bishops said they "invite everyone to unite in the defense of life, repudiating attempts to legalize abortion in our country.  Such an act is morally inadmissible, because it creates many victims: the destroyed child, the mother isolated in her feelings of guilt and psychologically ill, the father who approved or did not oppose it, and the rest of the family."

The president of the Conference's Life Commission, Archbishop Orlando Brandes of Londrina, noted that the statement had been drawn up with the help of jurists and doctors.

Brandes reminded the press of the Brazilian public's overwhelming opposition to the decriminalization of abortion, an opposition that has grown by five percent since last year and now includes over two thirds of the population.

"Ninety-seven percent of the Brazilian people are against abortion, 67% want existing laws regarding abortion to be maintained and not to be changed," he said. "All of those voices join forces with us in the defense of life."

Court Rules Against Coach's Right to Bow Head, Bend Knee During Team's Pre-Game Prayer

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

PHILADELPHIA, Penn., April 17, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit has ruled that a football coach may not silently bow his head or "take a knee" with his team as gestures of respect during student-led prayers prior to a game. Attorneys for The Rutherford Institute are acting as co-counsel for Coach Marcus Borden, who plans to appeal the ruling.

"If this ruling is allowed to stand, it will mean that high school teachers across the United States will have no free speech or academic freedom rights at all," said John W. Whitehead, president of The Rutherford Institute. "This undermines a time-honored tradition that has less to do with religion than it does athletic tradition. It's a sad statement on our rights as Americans that schools are no longer bastions of freedom."

The case arose in October 2005 after officials at East Brunswick High School adopted a policy prohibiting representatives of the school district from participating in student-initiated prayer, which has been a regular part of the high school football team's pre-game activities for over 25 years. However, school officials justified their actions by insisting that while student athletes have the constitutionally protected right to pray, that privilege does not extend to coaches, who are public employees and whose participation would violate the "separation of church and state."

In July 2006, U.S. District Judge Dennis Cavanaugh declared that the school district violated Borden's constitutional rights to free speech, freedom of association and academic freedom when they prohibited him from silently bowing his head and "taking a knee" with his players while they engaged in student-initiated, student-led, nonsectarian pre-game prayers.

The District Court also ruled that the school district would not be subject to liability under the Establishment Clause by virtue of Borden's gestures of respect. However, in challenging the court's decision, the school district, aided by Americans United for Separation of Church and State, is arguing that Borden has no constitutional rights of expression or academic freedom in connection with his duties as a teacher and coach.

Rutherford Institute attorneys have rebutted the school district's claims, insisting that the liberties secured by the U.S. Constitution guarantee Borden's right to offer a simple, silent gesture of respect, whether he does so by silently bowing his head or taking a knee while his players say their pre-game prayer. In issuing its ruling, the Court of Appeals reversed the lower court judgment in favor of Borden, declaring that Borden's expressive conduct is not protected by the First Amendment. It also ruled that "based on the history of Borden's conduct with the team's prayer, his acts cross the line and constitute an unconstitutional endorsement of religion."

German Politician Condemned for Suggesting Connection between Abortion and Infanticide

Follows conviction of former communist secret policewoman for manslaughter of her eight newborn children

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

By Hilary White

GERMANY, April 17, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - German lawmakers are asking what is wrong with their society after a former member of the communist secret police of East Germany was convicted on eight counts of manslaughter for neglect that resulted in the deaths of each of her newborn children whose remains she hid. One answer to the question, seemingly obvious to some, has been deemed "unacceptable". Wolfgang Boehmer, premier of the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, was condemned for suggesting a connection between liberal abortion laws and Germany's "shocking" increase in infanticide.

This week, 42-year-old Sabine Hilschenz was sentenced to fifteen years in prison after she claimed in court that she had been too drunk to remember either the births or deaths of eight of nine newborn children.

Local politicians reacted to the revelations of the children's deaths with shock, asking how such crimes could have occurred and not been revealed for 16 years.

"We are looking at a crime on a scale that, as far as I can remember, has never been seen in the history of the Federal Republic," the Interior Minister of the state of Brandenburg, Joerg Schoenbohm, said in a statement.

"We have to ask ourselves how this incredible crime remained hidden over all these years. It's a question directed at relatives, neighbours, doctors and the authorities," he said.

But some answers to those questions are more welcome than others and some are calling for Boehmer's resignation after he equated infanticide with abortion.

Boehmer, a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Party (CDU) and a gynaecologist, made the connection in early February. He noted to the news magazine Focus that East German laws had let women receive abortions until the 12th week of pregnancy. At the moment, German law, which was harmonized when the two Germanies were re-united, is the same although a woman needs to show that she has undergone "counseling."

Boehmer said the increase in infanticide in recent years "can be explained by the careless attitude towards early life in the new [eastern] states".

"Women decided without even having to give an explanation," said Boehmer. "That continues to have an effect today. It seems to me as if the killings of newborns -- although they have always happened -- are a means of family planning to some."

His suggestion of a correlation between infanticide and abortion has sparked outraged responses. Wolfgang Tiefensee, the federal minister responsible for the rebuilding of the east, said, "I find it outrageous for the past in East Germany and the current crimes to be named in one breath."

"Wolfgang Boehmer has slurred all eastern German women and equates abortion with the murder of children," Claudia Roth, head of the Green party, told daily Tageszeitung. "To be a woman and to have lived in Communist East Germany suffices for him as a reason for abuse and murder. It's not acceptable."

Incidents of infanticide are on the rise but not only in the territories of the former East Germany. The problem is becoming so common that, beginning in 2000, German hospitals began re-introducing the ancient medieval practice of baby-drop cupboards at which a mother could leave a child she felt she could not care for, without legal repercussions.

Last year it was revealed that up to 60 infants are being killed by their mothers every year in Germany. By mid-March six separate news items reported women killing or abandoning their newborn babies. One woman was accused of having beaten her baby to death a few minutes after birth. She told police that she wanted to hide her pregnancy from her "partner".

Michigan's Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Blocked By Pro-Abortion Legislators

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

By John Connolly

LANSING, Michigan, April 17, 2008, (LifeSiteNews.com) - Michigan's proposed ban on partial-birth abortion has been blocked by the Michigan House Judiciary Committee for months, a problem that Michigan Right to Life and Pro-Life politicians are planning to overcome in the next few days.

Senate Bill 776, which is a replication of the federal ban on abortion, is an answer to the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals' ruling that a partial-birth abortion law passed in 2004 was unconstitutional. S.B. 776 passed the Michigan Senate in January by a vote of 24-13. The bill then progressed to the Michigan House, where it was expected to be passed. But the House Judiciary Committee, led by Democrat Paul Condino, has refused to complete the processes needed to send the bill to the House for a vote.

Michigan Right to life has been negotiating with legislators to move the bill forward, as the window of negotiation time closes. It hopes to have the bill voted on by April 23, when the organization holds its annual Legislative Day, a pro-life lobbying and educational event.

"These negotiations can be tricky," said Ed Rivet, legislative director for Michigan Right to Life, in an interview with the Michigan Messenger. "We're hoping to break through in the next day or two. Then timing becomes less critical. Once we agree what we're going to do, we can decide when we're going to do it."

"We're moving toward action in one format or another," he added. "We want to negotiate the least amount of collateral damage on the House floor, on both sides."

Observers expect House Speaker Andy Dillon to use a "discharge motion" to remove the bill from the Judiciary Committee and bring it directly to the floor for a vote. Rivet said that Dillon has been "very involved" with discussions since the beginning of the House session.

Senator Cameron S. Brown, who sponsored the bill, maintains that there is little disagreement among legislators over partial-birth abortion, and that if the bill is taken to a vote, it will pass.

"Even though pro-life legislators make up an overwhelming majority of the Michigan House of Representatives - including the Speaker of the House - legislation to put a court-tested partial birth abortion ban on the books has been ignored since passing the Senate in January," Brown wrote on his blog. "I have long said that there are great differences of opinion on the issue of abortion, but that there is little disagreement on the egregious nature of partial birth abortions."

Governor Jennifer Granholm, whose veto against the 2004 partial-birth abortion law was overturned by a people's override, has not given any indication that she will sign or veto Senate Bill 776, should it pass.
