Parliamentary Front for Life Organizes International Pro-Life Meeting in Brazil
Rep. Chris Smith to speak about women's rights, abortion, and sex trafficking
By Matthew Cullinan Hoffman
BRASILIA, BRAZIL, February 20, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Brazil's Parliamentary Front for Life is holding an international conference in the nation's capital, Brasilia, today, which will include United States Representative Christopher Smith, co-chair of the Congressional Pro-Life Caucus.
The meeting will bring together legislators and executives from national, state, and local levels of government, both from Brazil and foreign countries, to map out a strategy for defending human life throughout the country. The organization will also approve a political manifesto to deliver to the Brazilian President Luiz Lula, as well as the presidents of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies (Brazil's lower legislative body).
In addition to Rep. Smith, participants will include Senator Liliana Negre, president of the World Parliamentary Front for Life, and Jorge Tadeu Mudalen, president of the Social Security and Family Commission of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies.
Although Smith is in Brazil primarily to address the problem of sex trafficking, he agreed to speak as an advisor of the Parliamentary Network for Critical Issues while in the country.
"Chris' basic speech is 'Human Rights and the 21st Century' and he speaks about how abortion is the ultimate human rights abuse of our time. He will portray abortion as the exploitation of women and parallel that to the exploitation of women who would be in sex trafficking," Marie Smith, President of PNCI, told LifeSiteNews.
Marie Smith emphasized the integral relationship between such issues as the right to life and the exploitation of women involved in prostitution, observing that women who become pregnant during their work as prostitutes often find that their child gives them the strength to overcome the problems they face in reforming their lives.
"If a woman is pregnant as a result of the sex trafficking work, the experience has been that that child actually gives her renewed life," said Smith. "Radical abortionists would say, 'Oh, she doesn't want to be bothered by it.' But it gives value to her life, now she must protect someone else. Where she's lost self-respect, it's now a new lease on life, because she has a new young person to care for."
Smith told LifeSiteNews that she thinks women's issues such as sex trafficking are often neglected by pro-lifers, to the detriment of the movement.
"One of my concerns is that sometimes pro-lifers are hesitant and very skeptical of other issues, such as the sex trafficking work or domestic violence, and if we don't engage in those issues we're just letting the other side take over the entire issue. So abortion becomes a component of the treatment of domestic violence. We need to be engaged in these issues and bring with it the pro-life perspective and that respect and dignity for women and for their children," she said.

Luxembourg Parliament Passes Euthanasia Bill
Set to become third country in EU to legalize euthanasia
By John Connolly
BRUSSELS, February 20, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Luxembourg parliament voted by a slim margin to legalize euthanasia on February 19, becoming the third country in the European Union to do so. While the euthanasia bill has not yet passed second reading, it is anticipated that it will come into effect this summer, unless a radical shift of opinion in parliament occurs.
The law was passed by a vote of 30 to 26. The vote was heralded as a defeat for Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker's Social Christian Party, which was strongly against the bill. Nearly all of the members of the Social Christian Party voted against the measure.
"The Christian Social Party and the Catholic Church were against the euthanasia law, calling it murder but we said no, it's just another way to go," said Jean Huss, a member of the Green Party, and co-sponsor of the bill.
The bill caused a heated debate in Luxembourg, with the majority of the medical establishment opposing it. Lawmakers have tried to quiet the unrest the debate caused, arguing that the close regulation of euthanasia in the bill will ensure that it will not cause wanton killing.
"This bill is not a permit to kill," said Socialist Lydie Err, who helped draft the bill. "It's not a law for the parents or the doctors but for the patient and the patient alone to decide if he wants to put an end to his suffering."
According to the bill, euthanasia would be regulated by living will. Doctors will also be required to consult with a colleague to ensure that the patient has a terminal illness.
The Netherlands became the first country in the European Union to legalize euthanasia in 2002, with Belgium following that example in 2003. Luxembourg's euthanasia bill has passed first reading by one vote and will be legalized is it passes second reading. Every member of the ruling Christian Social Party would need to vote against the euthanasia bill to ensure that it would be defeated.
In an interview with LifeSiteNews.com Alex Schadenberg, the Chairperson of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition - International, encouraged people from across the world to contact Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker's office, to support his efforts to defeat the bill. Shcadenberg said that people should let Juncker know that, "The legalization of euthanasia in Luxembourg is a direct threat to the lives of Luxembourg's most vulnerable citizens, people with disabilities, the frail elderly, the chronically ill, and people who experience depression. These citizens need their lives protected and not threatened by legalized euthanasia."
"Vulnerable people become highly dependant on others for their basic care," said Schadenberg, "Therefore no safeguard can effectively protect the lives of vulnerable people against abuses of the law. Vulnerable people in Luxembourg need excellent pain management and end-of-life care and not death."
"It is a grave error for Luxembourg to legalize euthanasia because it will result in a direct threat to your most vulnerable citizens and it will put a black mark on your world-wide image as a caring nation," said Schadenberg in a letter to the Prime Minister. "These people need laws that protect their lives. No safeguards can effectively protect the lives of vulnerable people based on the very nature of their dependency. Vulnerable people in Luxembourg need excellent pain, symptom management and end-of-life care and not death by euthanasia."

Abortionist Morgentaler Not on Order of Canada List for 2008
By Hilary White
OTTAWA, February 20, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Earlier this month, LifeSiteNews.com reported that some Canadian abortion activists were stepping up efforts to have Dr. Morgentaler awarded Canada's highest civilian honour, the Order of Canada, for his years of advocacy for legalizing abortion and for the thousands of abortions that he personally has performed.
In a piece appearing in the Globe and Mail, several of Canada's most prominent abortion advocates proposed a public campaign to have Dr. Morgentaler awarded the Order of Canada. They said that the matter was especially urgent now that he is ill and not expected to live much longer. The prestigious award is not granted posthumously.
Cathie Colombo, Dr. Morgentaler's assistant, went so far as to say it is "blasphemy" that he has not yet received the award.
But today, a media release from the office of the Governor General, who is responsible for granting the award, showed that Dr. Morgentaler is not included on the list for this year.
More than any other single person, Dr. Henry Morgentaler is responsible for the current Canadian legal situation, in which there is no law restricting or regulating abortion. Morgentaler's decades of campaigning for abortion resulted in the criminal code statute prohibiting abortion being struck down by the Supreme Court in 1988. Since then Canada has been left in a state of lawlessness, in which abortion is effectively legal throughout all nine months of pregnancy.
Jakki Jeffs, the head of Guelph Area Right to Life Association, told LifeSiteNews.com today that she contacted the Governor General's office and was told that the office that oversees the Order of Canada "had a file" about Dr. Morgentaler and that he had been nominated several times. Jeffs pointed out that although this does not mean that Dr. Morgentaler will be granted the award next year, it is nevertheless important for pro-life Canadians to let their opinions be heard.
Pro-life organizations are not the only groups in Canada to have qualms about Dr. Morgentaler's work. In his testimony before the Professional Corporation of Physicians of Quebec, Morgentaler admitted to having committed at least 7,000 abortions himself. However, in a 1976 investigation into his work, that organization suspended Morgentaler's medical licence for a year, stressing that the reason was not only that abortion was illegal but that he had conducted the abortions.
Morgentaler was cited "for not holding a valid interview before the abortion, for failing almost completely to gather a case history of his client, for failing to perform the necessary pregnancy test or blood test, for not obtaining pathological examination of the 'tissues' removed and for failing to follow up the state of health of his patients afterward."
The panel also declared that Morgentaler's behaviour reflected "an attitude which is primarily directed to protecting his fees." Morgentaler currently operates six private for-profit facilities across Canada. In 2002 the paper Le Droit revealed his gross annual revenue to be $11 million from his abortion practices.
The 1976 ruling from the disciplinary medical board said his practice was one which "confers a mercenary character on the doctor-patient relationship," and said it was "incapable of reconciling [Morgentaler's] behaviour with the humanitarian concern that [he] invoked throughout his defence."
The Order of Canada, given on behalf of the Crown by the Queen's representative, the Governor General, is intended to recognize Canadians who have made lifelong commitments to bettering Canadian society. This year, the new members include Al Davidson, who worked promoting nature conservation, Flora Dell, who worked to improve the health of older Canadians, and Terrence Gillespie, who dedicated his career to improving the health and well-being of children suffering from cystic fibrosis.
In June, 2005 the University of Western Ontario conferred an honorary Doctor of Laws degree upon Morgentaler in the midst of protests by students and others. 12,000 signatures were acquired on a petition asking the UWO to reverse its decision.

Jean Chretien to Receive Order of Canada for His "Legacy" - "Same-Sex Unions"
By John-Henry Westen
OTTAWA, February 20, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - It seems playing a key role in legalizing homosexual 'marriage,' over the objections of a majority of Canadians, is one way to get named to the Order of Canada, Canada's most prestigious award.
Governor General Michaëlle Jean will give the nation's highest honor for 'lifetime achievement' to former Prime Minister Jean Chretien, making him a Companion of the Order, on Friday February 22. The notice that was sent out by the Governor General's office, noting the award recipients and their major contributions to Canada, cited Chretien's "legacy" of homosexual unions.
"His government's legacy includes a number of social reform and humanitarian initiatives, such as recognition of same-sex unions and the abolition of landmines," said the citation. Chretien supported same-sex 'marriage.' However, he was replaced as Prime Minister by Paul Martin prior to the issue coming to a final vote in the House of Commons.
That the honor is being given to Chretien, and that his support for homosexuality has been singled out as one of the prime reasons for his receiving the award, should not come as a surprise to Canadians. Governor General Jean, who made her first affront to family values when, during her induction in 2005, refused to swear on the Bible, awarded same-sex 'marriage' pioneer Rev. Brent Hawkes with the Order of Canada last year.
Hawkes' claim to national fame is also his homosexual 'marriage' activism. In 2001 Hawkes illegally "married" a lesbian couple in his Toronto church, and when the Canadian government would not recognize the "marriage" as valid, he took the government to court. Subsequently, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice recognized the "marriage" as legal, beginning a process of judicial activism that eventually culminated in the legalization of homosexual "marriage" by Canada's Parliament.
In an affidavit before the Supreme Court of Canada, Hawkes bashed a Vatican document on homosexual unions, and statements by Catholic bishops on the same, as "expressions of hatred that should not be tolerated in our society."
At the time the courts forced various provinces to permit homosexual 'marriage', and even later when Parliament voted to legalize it, polls regularly showed that a majority of Canadians were opposed to the redefinition of marriage. One such Canadian, who was personally affected by homosexual parenting, has spoken before numerous legislators about her experiences, warning of the dangers to children.
Dawn Stefanowicz, author of "Out From Under: The Impact of Homosexual Parenting," told LifeSiteNews.com that Chretien does not deserve the Order of Canada, precisely because of his pushing of homosexual 'marriage' on the nation.
"Regrettably, Chretien will be known as the prime minister who socially deconstructed and redefined the family unit through the recognition of same-sex unions," she said. "Against the better expressed judgment of many Canadians, Chretien chose to pander to some special interest groups in the name of equality. As an adult survivor who grew up with a father who had numerous homosexual liaisons and involvements in the subcultures in North American cities, I know the incredible pain and longsuffering I endured. As well, there are many adult survivors who have contacted me sharing similar concerns and challenges."
Stefanowicz concluded, "Unequivocally, children will always have their best outcomes and opportunities when they are raised in married father-mother-headed families where gender is defined as male and female."

US Catholic University Approves Gay Straight Partnership Club
By Thaddeus M. Baklinski
PORTLAND, Oregon, February 20, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The University of Portland, a Catholic university run by the Holy Cross Fathers, has officially recognized the university's first-ever sexuality club, the Gay Straight Partnership (GSP).
The GSP's mission, according to the club's constitution, is "to build a community that is open and welcoming to all students" and "to help all students grow in friendship, knowledge, faith and service."
Although the university administration had turned down previous requests to form a homosexual student's club (in 1994 and 1999), the school was listed in 2004 as a 'gay friendly' institution by homosexual activist website Catholiclesbians.org (see LifeSiteNews.com report: U.S. Homosexual Activist Website Provides List of 'Gay Friendly' Catholic Parishes, http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2004/mar/040330a.html ).
A group of 10 UP students applied for club recognition with Student Activities last November. Their request were approved by University vice president for enrollment management and student life, John Goldrick, after they were asked to amend their proposal to remove a section on networking with other schools and similar clubs in the area, and choosing different advisors.
The club's initial advisers, social work professor Anissa Rogers and Kristina Houck, the Health Center's substance abuse prevention coordinator, were replaced by Holy Cross Fr. John Donato and Stacey Noem, a campus minister.
Donato said that he was chosen to be the club's new adviser not only because he can act as a liaison between the administration and the students, but also for his ability to "vocalize and facilitate the mission of the university."
"The fact that I am a Holy Cross priest and the associate vice president for student life is a good way to make sure that this group stays focused for what we hope all student groups are involved in, but also this particular one which deals with the sacred area of human sexuality," Donato said.
Although the Gay Straight Partnership has made pains to state that it will be adhering to Catholic teaching on sexuality, experience has shown pro-family advocates that such alliances typically result in the push to normalize and to affirm as morally acceptable an active homosexual lifestyle amongst university students.
A memo released by the GSP said, "the group will provide balanced programming and education and will offer a clear, faithful presentation of the Catholic Church's teaching about human sexuality and sexual orientation."
However, evidence that the club would promote homosexual behavior as normal and acceptable was offered by Valerie Silliman, Portland's GSP president and co-founder, who said that her "big dream is that [the club] will last for 25 years until we don't even need gay straight alliances because our community would already be welcoming.
"I hope it will encourage gay students to come to our university. I hope that gay students who are here will stay involved on campus rather than being marginalized and feeling alone. I hope that lots of straight people will be involved, and I hope people find answers and find questions."
"I think [the club] opens up new doors that were once closed on this campus due to a lack of diversity," sophomore Brandon Pratt, told The Beacon

Russian Homosexual Activists Complain of Pride Ban to European Court of Human Rights
By Hilary White
MOSCOW, February 20, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Homosexual activists have taken the authorities of the city of Moscow to the European Court of Human Rights for their refusal to allow the so-called "Gay Pride" parades that have become an annual feature of urban life in most western countries.
"I am absolutely certain of our final victory in Strasburg," organiser Nicolas Alexeyev told Interfax.
The first attempt to hold the homosexual march in 2006 was met with flat refusal by authorities. Mayor Luzhkov, a chairman and one of the founders of the ruling United Russia party, said that homosexuality was not natural and that such a march would cause "outrage" among the public, especially religious leaders. Gay activists threatened at the time to take their complaints to the European Court of Human Rights.
Moscow's authorities cited Article 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights, that states the right to freedom of assembly can be limited in the interests of public order to avoid disturbances.
Despite the ban from Moscow's mayor Yury Luzhkov, and violence at a march in 2006, homosexuals marched again in May 2007. Again counter protesters and gays clashed and police arrested as many as 70 protesters on both sides. Mayor Luzhkov called the attempt to bring the international homosexual activist agenda into Russia "satanic".
Support for the homosexual political agenda is low in Russia, with support for same-sex "marriage" or civil unions at 14 per cent. Protesters have demonstrated at Moscow's homosexual clubs. A 2005 opinion poll showed that 43 per cent of Russians believed homosexual men should be incarcerated.
Counter protesters at the 2007 march, identified by the BBC as "Orthodox extremists and nationalists", carried signs saying, "Moscow is not Sodom" and "No to pederasty". The Mayor's ban was supported by Christian and Muslim leaders.
The Russian Federation currently has no specific legislation regarding "discrimination,"
as do many countries of the west. Homosexual acts between consenting males were decriminalized in 1993 and homosexuality was removed from the list of mental disorders in Russia in 1999.
In response to the plans for the march in 2006, Grand Mufti Talgat Tadzhuddin was quoted as saying, "If they come out on to the streets anyway they should be flogged. Any normal person would do that - Muslims and Orthodox Christians alike."
Russian Orthodox Bishop Daniil of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk called the homosexual political movement "the propaganda of sin" and condemned the planned march as a "cynical mockery".
One of Russia's Chief Rabbis, Berl Lazar, said the march "would be a blow for morality".
At a press conference on February 1, 2007, Russian President, Vladimir Putin responded to a question about the homosexual movement, saying, "My approach toward gay parades and sexual minorities is very simple. It is directly linked to my responsibilities. One of the key problems of our country is the demographic problem."
Putin's concerns are well founded. Not only is Russia's birth rate plummeting, with the abortion rate being the highest in the world, the Russian life expectancy of 65.87 years at birth is 13 years shorter than the overall figure in the European Union. The Russian birth rate stands at 1.39 children born per woman.
Heart diseases account for 56.7 per cent of total deaths. About 16 million Russians suffer from cardiovascular diseases, placing Russia second in the world after Ukraine. Death rates from homicide, suicide and cancer are also especially high. HIV/AIDS, virtually non-existent in the Soviet era, rapidly spread following the collapse of the Soviet Union, mainly through the explosive growth of intravenous drug use. An estimated 860,000 people suffer from HIV/AIDS.
Mortality among Russian men rose by 60 per cent since the collapse of communism, four to five times higher than in Europe. The low life expectancy is due mainly to social factors that point to a massive decay of Russian civil and social life. Alcoholism, drug use and violent crime are responsible for a disproportionate number of deaths among young men.

Subpoena to Obtain Tiller Abortion Records Stayed: Allegations of Foul Play
TOPEKA, KS, February 20, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A subpoena issued by a citizen-called grand jury for abortion records in the custody of Attorney General Steve Six has been stayed by Kansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Kay McFarland.
The now-stayed subpoena asked for 60 abortion records that were obtained by former Attorney General Phill Kline in 2006, which have already had all patient identifying information redacted, and have been certified for release by the Supreme Court to investigative agencies of the Executive Branch. Some of those records are the basis for 19 criminal charges of illegal late-term abortions that Tiller currently faces. The grand jury is investigating Tiller on allegations of having committed illegal abortions on viable babies over a five-year period.
The Supreme Court said that Six's motion to stay the subpoena cited similar privacy concerns put forth by Tiller's attorneys, who earlier moved to block 3 grand jury subpoenas for 2,000 of Tiller's late-term abortion records.
"This ruling is troubling, given the fact that the records in Six's custody have already been certified for release by the Supreme Court and deemed to contain no information that could jeopardize a patient's privacy," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. "Has Justice McFarland become that forgetful?"
"Justice is teetering on a razor's edge. Every effort is being made to keep these records from being examined by this impartial grand jury. Thwarting this grand jury from fully investigating the serious allegations against Tiller is nothing less than the subversion of justice," said Newman. "The people need to start letting Six know that they will not tolerate further corruption in this matter."
Tiller's attorney, Dan Monna, said that Tiller is "very pleased" that the court and Six "continue their careful protection of patients' constitutional rights to privacy no matter how unpopular that may be, to a very vocal minority."
At the same time, a witness has reported suspicious activity at Tiller's late-term abortion mill. A large Penske box truck arrived at Women's Health Care Services on Monday, February 18, 2008, and was loaded with several boxes that appeared to contain documents, according to eye-witness Margaret Weaver, who was monitoring the late-term abortion mill. The clinic was not open to patients at the time, and no other vehicles came in or out of the parking lot.
What made the incident more suspicious, reported Weaver, was that the truck's license plate had been removed.
"Trucks of this nature are often leased to businesses," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. "But driving a motor vehicle without a license plate is illegal. No legitimate business would operate like that. Something is obviously going on there.
"Something must be done to preserve the integrity of those records until the court rules," said Newman. "We already know that Planned Parenthood falsified records submitted to a judge in another Kansas abortion investigation. We also documented shredding trucks at Tiller's destroying documents just days before a Supreme Court ruling on a different records request. Tiller cannot be trusted. From past performance, it is obvious that he will stop at nothing to avoid having to hand over accurate abortion records that could land him in prison, and that includes altering, moving or destroying incriminating evidence."
Those who are interested in expressing concerns may wish to contact the Attorney General's office.
