"China-Lite" : Two-Child Policy Bills Proposed in Philippines Include Criminal Sanctions
Pro-life advocates encouraged to sign petition against legislation
By John-Henry Westen
MANILA, January 29, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Three bills currently in committee in the Filipino House of Representatives seek to implement a two-child policy in the nation.
At a meeting in Washington DC last week, the Filipino Family Fund warned that the legislative proposals, which are being spearheaded by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and International Planned Parenthood and its affiliates, would result in human rights abuses. The Fund is encouraging pro-life supporters from around the world to sign onto a petition against the proposals.
The population control measures threaten the Philippines, one of the last Christian, Westernized countries. Population replacement is essential to the future of this nation of islands, explained Eileen Macapanas Cosby, President and Founder of the Fund.
Though backers of the bills claim the program would be voluntary, the bill contains criminal penalties, including imprisonment for up to six months, that would be imposed against those who would speak out against the population control measures.
Present at the meeting, and sharing the Fund's concerns over the legislative proposals, was US Congressman Todd Tiahrt, ranking member on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment and Related Agencies. Tiahrt's is an expert in the area as his "Tiahrt Amendment" ensures that US population control funds are only used in programs certified as voluntary.
"Filipino Americans believe that the best way to build a community of resources is to address poverty alleviation directly thought sustainable development projects," said Cosby. "We are working with private organizations and government agency leaders to provide solutions for family planning and rural development, and we are promoting self-sustaining ways to help strengthen our families in the Philippines."
Cosby told LifeSiteNews.com that a clause in one of the bills also promoted "same-sex marriage".
