Christian Photographer Hauled before Commission for Refusing Same-Sex Job

By John Jalsevac

New Mexico, January 30, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The case of a Christian photographer who refused to photograph a same-sex "commitment ceremony", was heard before the New Mexico Human Rights Division on Monday.

A same-sex couple asked Elaine Huguenin, co-owner with her husband of Elane Photography, to photograph a "commitment ceremony" that the two women wanted to hold. Huguenin declined because her Christian beliefs are in conflict with the message communicated by the ceremony.

The same-sex couple filed a complaint with the New Mexico Human Rights Division, which is now trying Elane Photography under state antidiscrimination laws for sexual orientation discrimination.

The Alliance Defense Fund (ADF), a legal alliance that is dedicated to defending and protecting religious freedom, sanctity of life, marriage, and family, is currently defending Elane Photography.

"On Monday we defended Elane Photography in court, saying basically that no person should be required to help others advance a message that they disagree with," ADF Senior Counsel and Senior Vice-President of the Office of Strategic Initiatives, Jordan Lorence, told LifeSiteNews in an interview today. "That's a basic First Amendment principle. The government is punishing Elaine photography for refusing to take photos which obviously advance the messages sent by the same-sex ceremony - that marriage can be defined as two women or two men."

In their complaint the homosexual couple has sought for an injunction against Elane Photography that will forbid them from ever again refusing to photograph a same-sex ceremony. They have also requested attorney's fees.

"Depending on how far up the ladder this goes of appeal that could be a lot of money," said Lorence. "Hundreds of thousands of dollars."

Lorence said that the ADF is framing its case in a similar fashion to the 1995 Supreme Court "Hurley" Case.  "In the Boston St. Patrick's Day Parade case the US Supreme Court said that the State of Massachusetts could not punish a privately run parade because it refused to allow a homosexual advocacy group to carry banners and signs in the parade. They said that would be compelled speech, ordering the parade organizers to help promote a message they do not want to promote. To apply the discrimination law that way violates freedom of speech.  We are making a similar kind of argument in this case."

Lorence said that this current case is demonstrative of a "tremendous threat" facing those with traditional views on marriage and family.

"I think that this is a tremendous threat to First Amendment rights. Those who are advocating for same-sex marriage and for rights based upon sexual orientation keep arguing, 'We are not going to apply these against churches. We are going to protect people's right of conscience. We are all about diversity and pluralism.'"

But, in practice, says Lorence, "Business owners with traditional views or church owners with traditional definitions of marriage are now vulnerable for lawsuits under these nondiscrimination laws. There are 20 states that have these laws where they ban sexual orientation discrimination. Most of the major cities in the United States also have these kinds of ordinances. So these are a big threat, as the federal government debates whether to make this a blanket nationwide law.

"We see that these [non-discrimination laws] are not rectifying some unjust discrimination, but being used to punish those who speak out in favor of traditional marriage and sexual restraint," he concluded.

Lorence said that the ADF is "cautiously optimistic that the commission will do the right thing." If the New Mexico Commission, however, decides against Elane Photography, Lorence said that the ADF would appeal the decision all the way up to the US Supreme Court if necessary.

"One who is unable to live without sex, in the end, becomes a slave": Italian Soccer Superstar

TURIN, January 30, 2008 (CWNews.com/LifeSiteNews.com) - In an interview for the Italian magazine Sportsweek, a star defender from Turin, Italy's Juventus soccer club, Nicola Legrottaglie, revealed that two years ago he made the decision to abstain from pre-marital sex.

Legrottaglie said, "I have not had sex in two years and honestly, it has not been a burden." The soccer player spoke candidly about his past exploits, saying that if he did not make a conquest every few days, "I panicked." Reflecting on that experience now, he said: "One who is unable to live without sex, in the end, becomes a slave."

The Juventus star told Sportsweek that he has chosen abstinence "not because I do not like women, but because I am waiting for the right woman with whom to have a family, a woman who shares the same values."

Legrottaglie's remarks are reminiscent of a June, 2007 incident, when a Brazilian soccer superstar responded in Vanity Fair to comments by a Brazilian supermodel.

"Today no one is a virgin when they get married ... show me someone who's a virgin!" said supermodel Gisele Bundchen at the time. She also criticized the Catholic Church’s moral teachings, saying, "How is it possible to not want people to use condoms and also not have abortions? It's impossible, I'm sorry."

However, Brazilian soccer superstar Ricardo Izecson Santos Leite responded to Bundchen's outburst, saying that both he and his wife, Caroline, were virgins when they got married. Ricardo, one of Brazil’s most successful soccer players, has long been known for both his outspoken Christian faith and his remarkable good looks.

“The Bible teaches that true love waits until marriage," Ricardo told “Vanity Fair”, saying about his marriage, “If our life today is so beautiful, I think it is because we waited."

The time prior to his and his wife’s marriage, during which they conducted a chaste relationship, says Ricardo, "was important, as it tested our love." The soccer star admitted that it was not easy to stay a virgin until his wedding night, and that even still there are difficulties in living faithfully, saying that “there are always temptations.” But he also says that the sacrifices that he and his wife made for each other have been more than worth it.

UK Government Education Guidelines: Don't use terms "Mom" and "Dad"

By Hilary White

LONDON, January 30, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Government guidelines for training school officials to be more sensitive to homosexuality, instruct teachers not to use the terms "mum and dad" when referring to students' parents, and to treat "even casual" use of terms like "gay" as equal to racism.

The guideance was commissioned by the Labour government directly from the homosexual lobby group Stonewall. The document was launched today at a Stonewall conference by Schools Secretary Ed Balls.

Ed Balls said, "Homophobic insults should be viewed as seriously as racism."

"Even casual use of homophobic language in schools can create an atmosphere that isolates young people and can be the forerunner of more serious forms of bullying."

The guidelines say that the word "parents" must replace "mum and dad", and that teachers should educate pupils about civil partnerships and gay adoption rights.

In Britain's current political climate, even young children have been subject to police interventions on accusations of making "racist" or "homophobic" comments. In October 2006, a 14-year-old school girl was arrested by police and detained in a cell for three hours after she asked to be moved into a group of students who spoke English in class. Stott was denounced to police for "racism" by her teachers. In April 2007, a ten-year-old boy was questioned after the boy sent an email calling another boy "gay".

In the "Frequently Asked Questions" section of the guidelines, in answer to the question, "We have to respect cultural and religious differences. Does this mean pupils can be homophobic?" the guidelines specifically state that those with religious views regarded by the homosexual movement as "intolerant" must be silent. "A person can hold whatever views they want but expressing views that denigrate others is unacceptable."

For Stonewall, youth and sexual innocence is no reason for an exemption. To the objection that primary school students are too young to understand issues of homosexuality, the guidelines respond, "Primary-school pupils may be too young to understand their own sexual orientation but it is likely that some primary-school pupils will know someone who is gay."

"Homophobic language is used in primary schools without the pupils necessarily realising what it is that they are saying. Primary schools should respond to homophobic bullying in an age-appropriate way whilst demonstrating that it is not acceptable in school."

For parents who object to their children being exposed to instruction on homosexuality, the guidelines say, "Regardless of their views on gay people or sexual orientation, parents and carers have to understand that schools have a responsibility to keep pupils safe."

Stonewall, perhaps the most successful homosexual activist organization in the world, has been accepted by the Labour government, first under Tony Blair and now by Gordon Brown's leadership, as the leading voice on all issues regarding homosexuality. The guidelines take this a step further in actually allowing the lobby group to author a government document.

Under Tony Blair's "New Labour" government, Section 28 - the law which banned the promotion of homosexuality in schools, was repealed. Since then, homosexual activists have used their influence in Parliament to implement a full roster of training for both teachers and students in normalizing homosexuality.

Spain's "Conservative" Party Offers Weak Resistance to Socialist Anti-Family Policies

As elections approach, People's Party candidate makes token gesture

By Matthew Cullinan Hoffman

SPAIN, January 30, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The leader of Spain's more conservative opposition party, the People's Party, is hinting that he might be willing to alter the nation's "homosexual marriage" law - slightly.

Mariano Rajoy, the party's presidential candidate, stated in a recent interview with the Spanish newspaper El Mundo that he would not eliminate the law's "homosexual marriage" provisions, but might change the name, presumably removing the identification of such privileges with "marriage".

With the presidential and parliamentary elections in March fast approaching, and the increasing influence of Spain's pro-family movement, the People's Party has a strong incentive to capitalize on discontent over the Spanish Socialist Worker's Party's legalization of "matrimony" between people of the same sex.

A recent pro-family rally lead by the nation's Catholic bishops drew over one million participants, and in Barcelona another gathering exceeded the capacity of the convention center where it was held.  Participants roundly denounced the socialists' marriage and family policies.

But Rajoy's remarks are unlikely to satisfy Spanish pro-family groups, which are hoping to see a more forceful offensive against the revolutionary policies instituted by the Spanish Socialist Worker's Party.  One such group, HazteOir, has collected 15,000 signatures on a petition, requesting that the People's Party take a clear stand against "homosexual marriage".

"When Rajoy affirms that, 'If I were to make some modification, it would only affect the name and not the rights and obligations that the law establishes,' he is making an express affirmation of his lack of commitment to marriage," said the organization on its website.

HazteOir's president Ignacio Arsuaga pointed out that in the same interview Rajoy also failed to clarify his position on homosexual adoptions. "How can he claim that he is committed to maintaining the rights acquired by homosexuals without clarifying that he understands that adoption is not a right?" he asked.  "It should not be forgotten that the right of adoption is a right of the minor who is adopted, not of the adopting parents, to have what nature has deprived him of: a father and mother, who ensure his complete and best development."

Two parliamentarians from the People's Party appeared at Barcelona's recent rally for Life, Family, and Liberty, and mentioned the idea of removing the word "marriage" from the legislation. They admitted that they would do nothing to change the nation's liberal abortion laws, but promised to rigorously enforce the provisions prohibiting late-term abortions without a diagnosis of a physical or "psychological" risk to the mother.

Such restrictions were the basis of recent prosecutions against abortionists in Barcelona and Madrid, who were accused of falsifying such diagnoses, as well as other violations of the law.

University Students Protest Morgentaler Decision on Parliament Hill

OTTAWA, January 30, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - On Monday January 28th, 2008, from 11:30am - 4:30pm, Carleton University's pro-life club, Lifeline, and members of the community, challenged the notion that the R. v. Morgentaler decision was beneficial for Canada. They set up a visual display on Parliament Hill showing the truth behind abortion.

The group mourned the loss of the 1,714,892 children missing since 1988 because of abortion. Pamphlets and bilingual press releases were handed out and banners were obtained from Lifeline as well as Campaign Life Coalition.

"It is apparent that Canadians are not settled on this issue, despite what many may wish to believe," said Nicholas McLeod, of Carleton Lifeline, "We hope to expose the truth of this 'choice' and challenge Canada to do better for women in crisis pregnancies".

Carleton Lifeline is a student club that promotes respect for all human life from conception. They believe in the inherent dignity of all human beings. They recognize that abortion harms mothers and ends the live of their innocent unborn children. They believe that Canada can do better.

Hay-Bale and Cross Monument to the Unborn Erected in Southern Alberta

LETHBRIDGE, January 30, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) -  Directly in front of the Canadian Reformed Church in Coaldale is a huge memorial in honor of the lives of the more than 100,000 unborn babies killed by surgical abortion each year in Canada. On January 28, the twentieth anniversary of the Supreme Court's Morgentaler ruling, which struck down Canada's abortion laws, the display was errected.

Located at the Western edge of the town of Coaldale, the display consists of 100 white crosses - each representing 100,000 unborn children whose lives are ended by abortion every year in this country. The crosses are propped up on hay bale, making an impressive and eye-catching display.

The display was put up by Southern Alberta ARPA, a group formed by various Reformed churches in Southern Alberta who promote awareness and action on social and political issues.

Catholic University Extols Pro-Abortion Alumnus Nancy Pelosi

WASHINGTON, January 30, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Despite its Catholic mission, Trinity University in Washington, D.C., continues to extol two of its pro-abortion alumnae, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius. Both public officials identify themselves as Catholics, but reject Catholic teaching on serious moral issues.

"It runs contrary to the very purpose of a Catholic university to applaud the pursuit of power for gravely immoral ends," said Patrick J. Reilly, President of The Cardinal Newman Society. "By deliberately associating itself with vocal advocates of what Pope John Paul II called a 'Culture of Death,' Trinity University has taken the low road."

Featured on Trinity's website is an announcement of Sebelius's Democratic response to President Bush's State of the Union address on Monday - which Trinity President Patricia McGuire attended as Pelosi's special guest. Also posted are an alumni magazine profile of Sebelius, a 2006 news release announcing her selection as head of the Democratic Governors Association, and a news release on TIME Magazine naming her a top governor.

But nowhere on the Trinity website is Sebelius's support for abortion mentioned.  Instead, the site quotes Pelosi, who claims Sebelius "epitomizes the leadership that is moving America in a New Direction." The site links to a "blog" on which McGuire praises Sebelius as "an amazing political leader" who "has been able to build bipartisan coalitions around issues of importance to people in Kansas" - but not including the defense of innocent human life.

In 2003, Trinity honored Pelosi and Sebelius with honorary doctorates at a gala dinner.  In November 2006, Trinity hailed the reelections of both women to their posts. In January 2007, Trinity again hailed Pelosi's selection as House Speaker with a press release.  Then Trinity endured a barrage of criticism from The Cardinal Newman Society and other concerned Catholics when it hosted a special Mass for Pelosi on January 3, the day before she was sworn in as Speaker.

Worse still, the celebrant of the Mass requested by Pelosi was Jesuit Father Robert Drinan, a former member of Congress who had supported abortion rights and publicly defended President Bill Clinton's veto of a bill to ban partial-birth abortion.  In his homily, Father Drinan had the audacity to recall "Christ's personal love of children and His affirmation that 'whatsoever you do for the least of My brethren you do for Me.'"  When Father Drinan died three weeks later, Trinity posted a tribute to him.

Of Sebelius's pro-abortion views, Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City said in September 2006, "It is difficult to find a single instance, either in a procedural or substantive vote, where she acted in a manner that would afford unborn children the maximum protection. …Sebelius voted to weaken or eliminate even such modest measures as parental notification, waiting periods and informed consent." He spoke on the occasion of her veto of a bill banning certain late-term abortions.

Canada's Abortion Community out in Force for 20th Anniversary

 By Hilary White

OTTAWA, January 29, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Canadian and international abortion supporters were in Ottawa and Montreal in force this week to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Supreme Court's 1988 Morgentaler decision, which threw out Canada's legal protections for the unborn.

"Songs and drumming" accompanied a grand event last night held by Senator Lucie Pépin, who invited "all MPs and Senators" to a "Gala Night Invitation to celebrate abortion" at the West Block of the House of Commons.

Senator Pepin was joined by Canada's abortion lobby groups: the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada (ARCC), Action Canada for Population and Development (ACPD), Canadians for Choice (CFC), Canadian Federation for Sexual Health (CFSH), Fédération du Québec pour le planning des naissances (FQPN) and the National Abortion Federation Canada (NAF). Guests of honour included Dr. Henry Morgentaler, Canada's "grandfather" of abortion and Judy Rebick, a long-time abortion lobbyist and feminist.

In Montreal, two Canadian feminist organizations, the Fédération du Québec pour le planning de naissances (FQPN) and the Fédération des femmes du Québec (FFQ), told news media that the fight for even greater abortion "rights" was not over and that dark threats were hovering on the horizon.

"There is a current of new conservatism," said Monika Dunn, co-ordinator of the FQPN. "It is wrong to think that the right to abortion is set in stone."

Homosexual activists gathered with a group of feminists in Montreal on Sunday. Holding signs with slogans such as "Mind Your Own Uterus" and "Keep Abortion Safe", the group of about 20 walked from Montreal 's Palais de Justice courthouse chanting slogans.

Matthew McLauchlin, co-president of LGBTT commission of the federal NDP's Quebec wing, one of the organizations participating in Sunday's demonstration, told the homosexual magazine X-Tra, "The fight against abortion is all about being able to control your own body and your own sexual and reproductive integrity."

He said, "The queer community owes it to itself to be in solidarity with the struggle for women's right to choose. This concerns not only queer women, but all queer people."

The gay activist for the federal NDP said that he was particularly concerned about the upcoming Parliamentary consideration of the proposed Unborn Victims of Crime Act that proposes to "amend the Criminal Code by making it an offence to injure, cause the death of or attempt to cause the death of a child before or during its birth while committing or attempting to commit an offence against the mother."

While the abortion advocates were feted, interviewed and celebrated in the principal cities of the nation, a group of about 60 pro-lifers braved sub-zero temperatures in Coquitlam, a suburb of Vancouver on Canada's west coast, so as to attend a candlelight prayer vigil to mark the anniversary.

March for Life Founder Well and Thankful for Prayers and Concern

WASHINGTON, January 30, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A March for Life Board of Directors release thanked March for Life participants for their concern and prayers for foundress Nellie Gray after her fall on the March for Life stage on January 22, 2008.

Nellie described the incident like this: "I tripped over a piece of the sound equipment, which pulled my footing out so forcefully that I felt as if I were airborne. There was nothing for me to grab hold of and nothing to break my fall. My glasses fell off. The full weight of my body was thrown head-first atop my glasses, which shattered and cut my forehead seriously. I did not lose consciousness, my vision is still fine, and the broken glass did not get into my eyes.

"The emergency medical team closed the wound with eleven stitches and reported that there appears to be no broken or fractured bones. The stitches will be removed in a few days. Even though I shall have a bruised head and cheek for awhile, I am feeling fine."

"Nellie is back at her desk," concluded the report.

Calgary Mainstream Newspaper Editorial Suggests Limits on Abortion

OPINION: A response to the Calgary Herald

by Hilary White

Hilary WhiteThe Calgary Herald, one of Canada's mainstream dailies, says it is "time to consider limits on abortion". The Herald editorial, while refusing to abandon its basic acceptance of the notion of "a woman's right to choose", has called for Canadians to "strike a better balance" between the "right" to abortion and "placing reasonable limits on that right."

"Currently", the writer says, "there is no balance at all".

While pro-life people rejoice that the non-existence of Canada's abortion law is finally being discussed, and the appalling rates of abortion in Canada acknowledged, the Herald has made a fundamental error of logic. The editorialist has fallen into a trap of presenting two mutually exclusive proposals as both valid and legitimate: that there is a child in the womb, and that there is a right to kill that child. Between these two opposed statements, there can be no balance.

"It is time to strike a better balance between protecting a woman's right to choose and placing reasonable limits on that right."

The Herald's writer, pointing to the gestational time limits in Germany and Britain, said, "The state ought to establish boundaries because it cannot tolerate a situation in which there is literally open season on its unborn citizens at every stage in their development."

"At a certain point," the Herald writer says, "the state must declare that having passed the legal limit during which abortion is permissible, the rights of unborn Canadian citizens take precedence."

But here the Herald has fallen into a logical pitfall, a trap from which it is only possible either to say that abortion must be outlawed entirely or that there is not now and never has been any such creature as an "unborn Canadian citizen". The abortion lobby has been successful in establishing in Canadian court cases that there is no such thing as an "unborn Canadian citizen" - that an unborn child is, according to one Alberta court, merely another part of the woman's body.

The existence of legal abortion depends entirely upon the principle that there is no person present in the womb who can have any rights whatever. The Canadian legal tradition is based on a principle that a human being must be protected under the law. Once the presence of a human person is admitted, there can be no such thing as a "woman's right to choose" to kill.

The concept of "balance" is a popular one in Canadian politics. The word was used by many who supported the legislation that enshrined embryo experimentation as a legitimate occupation for Canadian scientists. The bill was said to be "balanced" by its regulations governing the use of embryos in research. But a balance that allows human beings to be killed in large numbers to further medical science strains the meaning of the word.

The entire discussion on embryo research, and abortion, can be summed up simply. If an embryo is not a human being, no excuses, like "balance", are necessary; if, however, an embryo is a human being, no such excuse is possible or acceptable. MP's who suggested that the bill was "balanced" had to start with the decidedly unbalanced premise that an embryo was not a human being.

Similarly, if what is carried inside a woman during pregnancy is "an unborn Canadian citizen" as the Herald asserts, that person must be afforded the full rights of that citizenship, including the right not to be killed at his mother's request. If he is not a citizen, if he does not exist at all as the abortion movement would have us believe, there is no need for any "balance" between purportedly conflicting "rights".

This inability to recognize logical contradictions has crippled attempts to find sanity in the debate. Logical contradictions, the notion that two opposed ideas cannot both prevail, that one cannot both be in the room and not in the room at the same time, that a child exists before birth and a woman has a right to abortion, cannot be pleasantly plastered over with references to "balance".

To the minimal credit of the abortion movement, they have at least tacitly acknowledged that there is an insoluble conflict between the right of a human being to life and the proposed "right" of a woman to kill, by refusing to allow the existence of the child to be acknowledged or discussed. For legal abortion to be retained, the abortion movement knows that the entire discussion absolutely must remain in the abstract realm of "rights", "equality", "privacy", and autonomy, and never glance at the biological realities of pregnancy. That would be all too harsh reality.

There are only three possible positions to take in the abortion debate. A child in the womb at any stage really exists and is really a human being who must be protected from harm. No human being is present in the womb, so opposition to abortion is absurd and unjust. Or a third position that is becoming increasingly popular and accepted: that a child exists whom we may now kill at will with no legal repercussions, a position that simply negates all of the legal history of the western world and the foundational notion of human rights.

All of these positions are held, and fiercely defended, in the ongoing struggle over abortion. But they are all mutually exclusive positions and no logical "balance" is possible between them.

Letter to the Editor for Wednesday January, 30, 2008

Re: "Canadian Auto Workers Union Funds Gay Lobby Group to Promote Homosexuality in Schools"

Dear Editor,

Re: "Canadian Auto Workers Union Funds Gay Lobby Group to Promote Homosexuality in Schools" January 29. This was an excellent article by Hilary White.

The Canadian Auto Workers Union (CAW) has been funding numerous groups and causes with their memberships' compulsory union dues for years.

Here are some examples: The CAW gave a "$1-million donation to endow the CAW-Sam Gindin Chair in Social Justice and Democracy." Judy Rebick well known Morgentaler supporter is in this Chair at Ryerson University.

In the book "Under Siege" (page 8) by Ian McLeod, it is stated that the: "...auto workers...have diverted money ... into the social action coalitions."

CAW union boss Buzz Hargrove also wrote the Prime Minister on so-called "same-sex marriage" and claimed all his members support it. Here is Buzz sounding off: "Dear Prime Minister: Clearly the debate around same-sex marriage is heating up. I am writing once again to offer the support of our union, the Canadian Auto Workers, and to encourage you to hold strong on protection of minority rights through the Charter and press forward with same-sex marriage legislation."

Hargrove also writes on page 128, of his book "Labour of Love," "At a recent CAW council meeting, I tallied up the total of non-union-related donations our leadership approved...and it came to more than a quarter of a million dollars."

Obviously CAW union members dues are too high when some of their dues money can be handed over to various organizations. Surely any excess money it has should go to its laid off union members, after all it is their money.
