9th Bishop Condemns Morgentaler's Appointment to Order of Canada
Asks how Canadians can address Henry Morgentaler as "doctor"?
By Tim Waggoner
BATHURST, NB, July 11, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Bishop Valéry Vienneau of the Bathurst diocese in New Brunswick, has written a letter to Governor General Michaelle Jean expressing his "profound disappointment" and "total disagreement" with Dr. Henry Morgentaler's appointment to the Order of Canada, and has beseeched her to revoke the decision.
"I have often questioned how we can continue to address Henry Morgentaler as "doctor" or "physician", he who has dishonored the medical profession by fighting so relentlessly against life, in favor of abortion," read the bishop's letter.
After mentioning the "discord" Morgentaler has "sown" into the nation, Bishop Vienneau stated that the abortionist's knack for spreading division even infiltrated the Order of Canada Advisory Council.
"How does one 'dare' to propose to Canadians that they distinguish, with an honor such as the Order of Canada, a person so often the cause of antagonism and conflict? It seems that he has even provoked discord among the members of the selection committee who were unable to make a unanimous recommendation," said the bishop.
"He has not brought one legitimate contribution to the community but rather caused death, directly or indirectly, to thousands of unborn children. The hearts of millions of Canadians have been wounded by this nomination which discredits the Order of Canada by bestowing this honor to such a controversial figure who leaves no one indifferent," concluded Bishop Vienneau.
Bishop Vienneau is the 9th Canadian bishop known to publicly oppose Morgentaler's induction into the Order of Canada. As well, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops organization issued a statement against the appointment.
List of individual bishops known to have publicly criticized the Morgentaler appointment:

Archbishop Thomas Collins of Toronto

Bishop James Wingle of St. Catharines
Bishop Fred Henry of Calgary
Archbishop Richard Smith of Edmonton
Bishop Ronald Fabbro of London
Bishop Nicola De Angelis of Peterborough
